Between the 1780s and 1980s, more than half of the wetlands in the continental United States were lost to dredging, filling, channelization, dams, and other aspects of rural and urban development. About half of Florida’s wetlands have been destroyed. Some states, such as California and Ohio, have lost over 90 percent of their wetlands.
