Law enforcement officials warily eye White House as Trump criticizes FBI – Washington Post

FBI Director Christopher Wray testifies during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Nov. 30.
The FBI is under renewed scrutiny over the conduct of one of its senior agents on the separate probes into Russian intererence in the 2016 electoin and Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while secretary of state. (Reynold/Epa-Efe/Rex/Shutterstock/Reynold/Epa-Efe/Rex/Shutterstock)
FBI Director Christopher A. Wray sent a staff-wide message Monday in the wake of fresh criticism from President Trump, telling employees to keep focused on their mission and praising them for “example after example’’ of their professionalism.
The note did not mention the president’s criticism or his claim over the weekend that the FBI was “in Tatters.’’
Instead, Mr. Wray sought to reassure them of his faith in their work.
“We find ourselves under the microscope each and every day – and rightfully so,’’ Mr. Wray wrote. He noted that he has defended the agency to Congress, and expects to do so again later this week.
The note ends with one of Mr. Wray’s favorite phrases to his personnel: “Keep calm and tackle hard.’’
On Saturday, The Washington Post and the New York Times reported that Peter Strzok, a senior counterintelligence official who played a key role in investigating both the Hillary Clinton email case and possible connections between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, had been removed from his job on the special counsel’s probe because of texts he exchanged with another senior FBI official.
In response, Trump tweeted over the weekend that the FBI’s reputation was “in Tatters — worst in history! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.’’
Strzok had been working as the top FBI official assigned to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. When officials learned of his alleged indiscretions with another FBI official also involved in both the Clinton and Russia probes, he was immediately taken off the Mueller team and assigned to work in the human resources section of the FBI — widely understood by colleagues at the FBI to be a demotion.
Mueller is probing whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russian agents to try to interfere in the 2016 presidential race, and whether the president or other White House officials sought to obstruct justice in trying to end that investigation, according to people familiar with the matter. The president has long maintained he did nothing wrong, and he has called the probe a political witch hunt, saying it is Clinton, not him, who should be investigated. White House aides have repeatedly said Mueller’s probe will end soon, even though people close to the investigation have said it will last many more months, and possibly years.
Within the Justice Department and the FBI, officials have for months feared that revelations about Strzok’s alleged conduct with another FBI official could give fuel to calls from the White House and Republicans in Congress to end the Mueller’s probe.
The conduct by Strzok and the FBI official, a lawyer named Lisa Page, is now being investigated by the Justice Department’s inspector general. People familiar with the texts described the communications as disparaging of Trump and generally supportive of Clinton, although one of those individuals — a friend of Page — insisted the whole issue was “overblown.’’
Reacting to that news, Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a statement saying the allegations, if true, “would raise serious questions of public trust.’’ He also said he had instructed Wray to “promptly make any necessary changes to his management and investigative teams consistent with the highest professional standards.”
One former law enforcement official joked darkly that he would be watching Sean Hannity’s broadcast on Fox News on Monday night to see if there would, in fact, be personnel moves made at the FBI or Justice Department — a reference to a moment in March when the White House decided to remove dozens of U.S. attorneys. The night before Trump made that move, Hannity — an informal adviser to the president — had used his program to urge the president to do that very thing.
Within the FBI, current and former officials said, there is still hope that the controversy will pass without firings or reassignments.
“It’s not so much demoralizing as it is just frustrating,’’ said Don Borelli, a former counterterrorism supervisor in the FBI.
“It was always a traditional FBI thing that when you’d get attacked in the news or something, there wouldn’t be a lot of stories or statements put out in self-defense. That’s just the way the FBI has done business,’’ he said.
In past decades, such criticism often came from lawmakers. What’s different now, Borelli said, is that the salvos are coming from the president.
“Back then, it was always Congress. It was never tweets from the White House. This is a whole new thing,’’ he said. “I don’t think that anybody really feels like the FBI’s reputation is in tatters. They don’t like all this stuff, but it’s not going to change anybody’s attitude or the way they go about their business.’’
Thomas O’Connor, the president of the FBI Agents Association, issued a statement saying his group’s members act “with unwavering integrity and professionalism and a focus on complying with the law and the Constitution. . . . FBI agents are dedicated to their mission; suggesting otherwise is simply false.’’
At FBI headquarters, officials have demurred from addressing the president’s criticism directly.
The attorney general’s comments appear to criticize the FBI more than defend the bureau. To some former federal law enforcement officials — particularly those who led the agency during the Obama administration — that is an alarming pattern.
For months, current and former Justice Department officials have voiced concerns about the president’s frequent criticism of federal law enforcement — that his comments hurt morale, raise doubts in the public’s mind about the Justice Department’s independence and integrity, and make it harder for senior officials to keep politics out of prosecutorial decisions.
On Monday, former attorney general Eric H. Holder Jr. called on current Justice Department leadership to “do your jobs, step up.’’
Noting that the top law enforcement officials have all been criticized or attacked in some way by the White House, Holder urged them to “support these people who keep our nation safe, insure justice and are last defense against a real threat to our democracy. . . . Leadership/Courage more important than job security.”

Tucker Carlson: “Out Of Control” FBI Considers Itself Above The Law, Threat To Every American | Video
mikenova shared this story .

Tucker Carlson delivers commentary on FBI agent Peter Strzok and an “out of control” FBI on Monday’s broadcast of his FOX News show. Strzok was heavily involved in two politicized cases — the Clinton email investigation and the Russian collusion probe and oversaw interviews with Mike Flynn.
“There are many examples of this, but the point is clear, the FBI is out of control and not just in the Trump investigation but much more broadly. An agency charged with enforcing the law clearly considers itself above the law, and that is a threat to you and every American, no matter who you voted for,” Carlson said Monday.
Carlson also reported that Strzok had a hand in the wording of then-FBI Director James Comey’s infamous statement clearing Hillary Clinton of wrongdoing in the investigation into her private server. Strzok reportedly prodded Comey to use “extremely careless” instead of “grossly negligent.”
Strzok has since been removed from Mueller’s investigative team after it was found out he exchanged anti-Trump text messages with a mistress.

CARLSON: Two days ago comment news broke that a key figure in the Mueller investigation, a longtime FBI official named Peter Strzok had been removed from his job for sending highly political text messages to his mistress, whose another FBI official.
Apparently, those texts attacked President Trump and expressed affection for Hillary Clinton. Ordinarily, this would not rate a headline. Even career government officials are allowed to have political views. But this is no ordinary moment. Peter Strzok is at the very center of the two most politicized Justice Department cases in a generation.
Strzok was first of all deeply involved in the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private email server last year. At the conclusion of that investigation, it was apparently Strzok who changed the FBI’s description of what Hillary did from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless.” Now, the first description is a crime, the second is merely a blunder. So in effect, Peter Strzok exonerated Hillary Clinton in the middle of a presidential campaign.

Carlson said when Strzok interviewed Flynn, the one that resulted in his guilty plea, the then-National Security Advisor did not have a lawyer present because he had no idea he was being officially interviewed.

CARLSON: In effect, Peter Strzok exonerated Hillary Clinton in the middle of a presidential campaign. But then he kept going. Strzok went on to sign the document, the official document that opened an investigation into Russian meddling in an election. The very same investigation the Hillary campaign was calling for at the time. The one that has now completely overwhelmed to the Trump presidency.
And if that wasn’t enough, it was also Peter Strzok who, according to news accounts this afternoon oversaw the FBI’s interviews in January with general Mike Flynn at the White House. The ones that resulted in Flynn pleading guilty to felony charges on Friday. Apparently, Flynn had no idea he was being interviewed and that would explain why he didn’t have a lawyer present. If true, that would qualify as trickery, it would be unethical.

Mueller III’s investigation, had “exchanged politically charged texts disparaging [President] Trump and supporting Democrat Hillary Clinton” and that Strzok was “also a key player in the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server.”
This is a blockbuster revelation, carrying the possibility of shattering public confidence in a number of long-held assumptions about the criminal-justice system generally and the FBI and the Justice Department specifically. The Justice Department should appoint a special counsel to investigate Strzok’s actions as soon as possible.
The Strzok report comes on heels of the widely derided Justice Department investigation into IRS discrimination against conservative groups, including the disposition of allegations against IRS senior official Lois Lerner, and after the wildly erratic behavior of then-FBI Director James B. Comey during 2016. It also follows the vote to hold then-Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in contempt of Congress — the first ever against a sitting member of the Cabinet — with 17 Democrats voting in support. Mix into this battering of the Justice Department’s and FBI’s reputations the still-murky charges and counter-charges of abuse of “unmasking” powers during the waning days of the Obama era.

As a result, a large swath of responsible center-right observers are now demanding a full review of the investigation and prosecution powers wielded by the Obama-era Justice Department and FBI. Former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy wrote in the National Review on Saturday that President Trump should call for a second independent counsel to investigate abuse of the counterintelligence authorities under President Barack Obama, abuses he suggests were undertaken to protect the controversial Iran deal on nuclear weapons.

This is an excellent idea. The new special counsel could also review Strzok’s texts and, more crucially, his conduct throughout 2015 and 2016. Strzok may be completely innocent of anything except an off-handed joke that the straight-laced Mueller deemed necessary to punish in a display of a “Caesar’s wife” sort of purity of purpose. But if his texts to FBI lawyer Lisa Page reveal a partisan animus towards Trump or admiration for Clinton, then the bureau and the department have a huge problem on their hands and not just with Strzok and Page.
When FBI Special Agent Robert Hanssen was revealed to have committed espionage against the United States, it didn’t mean that even one other member of the bureau was guilty of Hanssen’s sins, but it did require a painstaking review of all of Hanssen’s activities and inputs, as all of them had to be reconsidered in light of his treasonous behavior.
If Strzok’s texts reveal deep animus towards Trump or an operational effort to tilt one or more investigations, then all of his actions have to be reviewed to assure the public’s confidence in the bureau. That one or two agents or officials of the bureau are discovered to have been acting from improper motives would be bad enough. To try and sweep those activities under the rug would be worse. Against the backdrop of other recent controversies, it would be disastrous.
Step one is a quick publication of the questionable texts. All of them. The public has a right to know what the predicate for Mueller’s extraordinary action was. The public also deserves a detailed account of Strzok’s (and Page’s) duties and authorities during the years in question. If an NBA official was discovered to have purposefully thrown even one game, every game in which he had carried a whistle would be under the microscope. That’s how it works.
Unless there’s a coverup.
Nevertheless, just as Hanssen was “one bad apple” who didn’t spoil the bunch, so even an out-of-bounds Strzok doesn’t necessarily mean anything about the FBI beyond him. To get to the truth, and restore confidence in federal law enforcement, better a special counsel to conduct the inquiry, bring any necessary charges and make a report — someone without ties to the president or his opponents.
They do exist, such men and women. Former federal judges make excellent candidates. But we need one appointed right now.

Trump Has Now Urged Seven Officials to Help End the Russia Probes
mikenova shared this story from Newsweek.

President Donald Trump has pushed at least seven officials to put an end to investigations at various levels of government into whether his campaign helped Russia meddle in the 2016 presidential election.
When the Feds Come Knocking on Kushner’s Door …

mikenova shared this story .

Jared Kushner, according to reporting on Thursday from NBC and the Washington Post, is now front-and-center in the FBI’s investigation of Russia’s intersection with the Trump presidential campaign and, apparently, the Trump White House.
There are some unanswered questions here: NBC noted that Kushner is being treated differently from Trump campaign aides, such as Paul Manafort, and former White House officials, such as Michael Flynn. Grand juries have subpoenaed records from both of those men, and it’s not clear if subpoenas have landed on Kushner’s doorstep.
Kushner Faces Scrutiny in FBI’s Russia Investigation
But the Washington Post also reported — and this seems central and crucial as to why the president’s son-in-law is a different sort of target here — that the FBI is focusing on a series of conversations that Kushner had in December with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

At the time, Kushner had already spent months trying to arrange fresh financing for a troubled building his family owns, 666 Fifth Avenue.
After one of those meetings, Kislyak arranged a meeting between Kushner and Sergey Gorkov, the powerful chief executive of a major Russian bank, Vnesheconombank, also known as VEB.
The U.S. had imposed financial sanctions on VEB because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military incursions in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. (During this period the Russians were also meeting with Flynn, Trump’s incoming national security adviser.)
VEB has close ties to the Kremlin, and Gorkov attended a training academy for members of Russia’s security and intelligence services. A Trump spokeswoman has described Kushner’s meetings with the Russians as routine, which they may have been given his role at the time as Trump’s liaison to foreign powers.
But given the significance of 666 Fifth Avenue to Kushner and his family’s fortunes, it’s also possible that he saw the Russians as potential investors.

It’s worth recalling that Kushner had spent the prior months lobbying Anbang, an insurer and prolific deal-maker close to China’s government, for a major investment in 666 Fifth Avenue. Anbang had considered investing $4 billion in the building.
Kushner overpaid for the building in 2007, when he bought it with the help of bank loans for $1.8 billion. When the financial crisis landed a year later, occupancy rates in the building plummeted and Kushner had to be rescued by outside investors.
Anbang’s investment would have valued the building at a handsome $2.85 billion, and also refinanced about $1.15 billion in debt.
The possibility of a transaction brought scrutiny from two Bloomberg reporters, Caleb Melby and David Kocieniewski, as well as from Congress and the New York Times. I discussed it in a column here and here. The Anbang deal faded after the Bloomberg report.
There’s good reason for all the attention being paid to these things: Kushner is a senior White House adviser and a pivotal voice on foreign policy issues. Kushner was also reportedly one of the leading voices telling Trump to fire James Comey from his job as FBI director.
“Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings,” Kushner’s lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, told CNN on Thursday. “He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry.”
Kushner, at 36 years old, had little diplomatic or global business experience prior to the president giving him one of the White House’s most powerful and multi-faceted portfolios. The prospect that he may have been jockeying for Chinese or Russian financiers to bail out him and his family from a potentially disastrous investment at 666 Fifth Avenue presents complex but obvious conflicts of interest as well as the prospect of injudicious or self-serving White House policymaking.
The Trumps and the Kushners have also played fast and loose with the norms of ethics and conflicts of interest standards as they’ve gone about mingling their political and business lives. It’s visible in the Washington hotel that they continue to own and run not too far from the White House; it’s visible in the Kushner family’s recent fundraising tour in China for a New Jersey property, and it’s visible — in the very lack of visibility — around the president’s own financial holdings and tax payments.
Trump is insulated from some of this, legally. As he said just two weeks after his November election victory: “The law’s totally on my side, meaning, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.”
The president can have a financial conflict, of course. But no federal ethics laws apply to the president. (There are anti-bribery clauses of the Constitution that do, however.)
Regardless, the president is, indeed, in a privileged legal position when it comes to financial conflicts.
Trump’s advisers and relatives are not immune to those laws and others, however. To the extent that the FBI is knocking on Kushner’s door with financial questions, the president’s son-in-law could be in a very difficult situation.

mikenova shared this story .

Robert S. Mueller III. (Charles Dharapak/Associated Press)

December 4 at 6:11 PM

The Post reported that a former top FBI official, Peter Strzok, who had been assigned to and then removed from special counsel Robert S.

On Thursday The New York Times revealed that over the summer Trump urged members of the Senate—including those leading the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation—to wrap up their investigations.
The chairman of the intelligence committee, Republican Richard Burr, said in an interview that Trump made a request “something along the lines of ‘I hope you can conclude this as quickly as possible.’”

However, a Republican senator who spoke to Burr told the Times that Trump had been “very forceful” in conversations with Burr. Another senator, who also remained anonymous, told the paper Trump called other congressional members, asking them to lean on Burr to end the investigation.
Burr said other members of his committee told him of similar calls they received from Trump but said he didn’t feel pressured to end the probe, chalking up the president’s actions to inexperience.
According to lawmakers and aides, Trump also approached Republican Senator Roy Blunt, who sits on the committee, and Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, with requests to end the investigations quickly.
Related: Has Michael Flynn flipped? Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team reportedly met with his lawyer
The news brings to seven the total number of officials Trump has asked to help end the multiple investigations moving forward in both branches of Congress and the Department of Justice.
Special counsel Robert Mueller is pushing ahead with his investigation of whether Trump obstructed justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey, who was leading one of the investigations.
Congress started its investigation early this year after key American intelligence agencies compiled a report that found Russia worked to undermine Trump’s campaign rival Hillary Clinton and assist his campaign.
The latest news is a “huge story,” wrote attorney Norm Eisen on Twitter Thursday because it “corroborates a corrupt motive” for Trump’s firing of Comey on May 9.
Eisen, a former White House special counsel for ethics and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, published a report in October arguing that Trump obstructed justice by attempting to intervene in the investigations.
In a letter written by Comey ahead of his testimony to Burr’s committee in June, he wrote that Trump had pressured him on several occasions to end the part of the investigation examining former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Writing about a rare private meeting between the president and his top law enforcement official in February, Comey said Trump tried to pressure him into “letting Flynn go.” The request came after Flynn misled Vice President Mike Pence about contact he had had with the Russian ambassador. Trump made a similar request to him in a phone call, Comey said.
During closed testimony before Burr’s committee and in separate interviews with Mueller’s legal team in June, two top Trump administration intelligence officials said the president approached them to defend him publicly against the investigations, multiple sources told CNN.
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers said Trump asked them to state publicly that his campaign did not work with Russia to interfere in the election. A report by The Wall Street Journal in June cited sources who said Trump also called Rogers to state publicly that there is no evidence his campaign colluded with Russia.
Officials who spoke with The Washington Post in June said that Trump applied pressure to CIA Director Mike Pompeo in March when he kept Pompeo and Coats behind after a meeting to complain about Comey’s handling of the Russia investigation. Coats reportedly told other officials that Trump had asked for an intervention. It is not known whether Trump asked Pompeo directly to intervene.
Trump’s request came after Comey testified before Congress that the FBI was investigating whether Trump’s campaign worked with Russia during the election campaign.
“Who believes at this point he didn’t obstruct justice?” former Department of Justice public affairs director Matthew Miller‏ wrote on Twitter Thursday.
“Pressuring senators to end an investigation that impacts him & those close to him could be further evidence of obstruction of justice by the President,” wrote Noah Bookbinder‏, an attorney who co-wrote the report with Eisen, on Thursday. He called Trump’s behavior “part of a pattern of conduct.”

The Turkish government has issued a warrant for the arrest of a former officer in the United States Central Intelligence Agency, which Ankara claims was instrumental in the failed July 2016 attempt to topple the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The move comes amidst heightened tensions in relations between Ankara and Washington. The two NATO allies have partially revoked entry visas for each others citizens, while it is alleged that Michael Flynn, US President Donald Trumps former national security advisor, had an illegal agreement with Turkey to help abduct a Turkish dissident cleric living in Pennsylvania and help transport him to Turkey.

Robert S. Mueller III. (Charles Dharapak/Associated Press)

December 4 at 6:11 PM

The Post reported that a former top FBI official, Peter Strzok, who had been assigned to and then removed from special counsel Robert S.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn(Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo, epa)

On Friday, President Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about a perfectly legal conversation he had during the presidential transition with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
Flynn should not have lied, and why he chose to remains a mystery, but the substance of the single-count indictment against Flynn shows that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has strayed far from its original purpose.
We have come down quite a way from the hyperventilation about Russia “hacking the election” a year ago. What happened to Democratic Sen. Mark Warner’s claim, later promoted by Hillary Clinton, that there were 1,000 Russian agents planting anti-Hillary fake news stories in key swing states? Or that Russians had delivered Wisconsin to Trump? All the conspiracy theorists have so far are a few Facebook ads that can’t credibly be shown to have changed even one vote.
More: With Flynn’s guilty plea, is it Trump impeachment time yet?
More: Tillerson State Department ouster is overdue, but won’t solve the Trump problem
Flynn was fully in his rights making the call to Kislyak. Despite the best efforts of the anti-Trumpers, it is still not illegal to talk to Russians. Even Democratic former CIA director and Defense secretary Leon Panetta said it was a “stretch” to say these contacts broke the law.
The dust-up seems mainly to be about the decorum of presidential transitions. Days after the 2016 election, the Trump team cautioned the Obama administration against pursuing new and damaging foreign policy initiatives that did not align with Trump’s priorities.
“I don’t think it’s in keeping with the spirit of the transition,” one of president-elect Trump’s national security advisers told Politico on Nov. 10, 2016, “to try to push through agenda items that are contrary to the president-elect’s positions.”
The Trump transition team feared, for good reason, that the lame-duck Obama administration was poisoning the well with Russia, and pursuing spiteful anti-Israel policies on the way out the door. Trump asked Flynn, his soon-to-be national security adviser, to open a semi-official channel to Russia through its ambassador to discuss future cooperative efforts against the Islamic State and the United Nations vote on an anti-Israel resolution. As lawyer Alan Dershowitz argued, “Not only was that request not criminal, it was the right thing to do.”
The phone call to Kislyak, and any other such contacts with foreign officials, should be viewed in that context. This was not, for example, on the level of colluding with shadowy Russian intelligence contacts to create disinformation to try to swing the election, as the authors of the Clinton-connected Trump smear dossier did.
There was ample precedent for the president-elect to put out feelers to foreign leaders.

  • A memo from the Podesta files released by WikiLeaks shows that the Obama team had planned for the “president-elect and senior officials (to) begin confidential policy consultations with key actors in U.S. and abroad” between Thanksgiving and Inauguration Day.
  • Obama also openly used emissaries and go-betweens to meet with foreign leaders during his transition.
  • And for overwrought members of “the resistance” who think the unenforceable Logan Act is suddenly in play, recall that in 2008 then-candidate Obama arranged substantive foreign policy discussions with numerous foreign dignitaries and leaders during an overseas campaign trip before the election.

An erroneous ABC News report that Trump had dispatched Flynn to make contact with Russia before the election appears to have caused a massive stock market selloff. The report was corrected, and reporter Brian Ross was suspended. The important takeaway of ABC’s fake news outbreak is that since the Trump team’s outreach to Russia took place after the election, it implies there were no channels to Moscow before the fact. This puts a stake in the heart of the collusion theory.
A CNN analyst speculated that instead of outright coordination, there was an implicit quid pro quo for Russia getting Trump elected. This might be called the “grasping at straws” gambit.
On Sunday, Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., resurrected the notion that Trump obstructed justice by firing then-FBI Director and Bible scholar James Comey. But again, this is a weak and constitutionally suspect narrative.
The real obstruction might be found in the Mueller investigation itself. The legitimacy of the FBI witch hunt against Trump was further damaged by reports that leading FBI investigator Peter Strzok, who had spearheaded the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s sketchy home-brew email server, was demoted because of anti-Trump texts he exchanged with co-worker Lisa Page, with whom he was having an extramarital affair.
This is hardly an unbiased investigation. If the type of process crime that Flynn was nailed for is all the Mueller team can come up with, it is time to move on.

Flynns Plea and the Significance of the Lying in the Russia Investigation

The interpretation of the Flynn plea is subject to the usual risks that someoneRobert Muellerknows far more than anyone else, and with what is available on the public record, it may be impossible to appreciate how this piece fits into the mosaic of the special counsels investigation. So some may believe it is safest to give the event the narrowest possible reading. Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser, lied to the FBI to cover up Trump transition team activities that he thought it best not to acknowledge. On this account, Flynn may have been concerned about the propriety of contacts with Russia before the inauguration to shift U.S. policy on sanctions and the U.N. Security Council vote on Israeli settlements. So much, then, for this phase of the case: Now we wait to see what else Flynn may disclose to the special counsel as part of their cooperation agreement.
This is not a wholly mistaken view of the Flynn plea, but it is a limited one. It fails to connect Flynns lies about the calls with the Russian ambassador to the others just like them told repeatedly by the president and his associates. Indeed, the president has led the charge in denying any contacts between Russia and his campaigns, denouncing as a hoax the suggestion of collusion, and he has had a hand in directing others to dissemble about Russia-related communications. For example, we have the extraordinary revelation that the president dictated a press release falsely stating the purpose and substance of the meeting in Trump Tower between his son and other members of the campaign staff, and a traveling party from Moscow offering campaign support and derogatory information about Hillary Clinton. The Flynn lies are just the latest in the series.
Why all the lying? It is easy to understand certain of the individual instances. Telling the truth about the Trump Tower meeting must have seemed unimaginable. It would have required the campaign to admit that it welcomed help from the Kremlin and met in private to accept what the emissaries from Moscow came to offer. And the campaign would never have been persuaded of the wisdom of coming clean about Trumps sons correspondence with WikiLeaks.
It is less clear why Flynn would have lied to the FBI about his phone calls with Ambassador Kislyak in December 2016. True, it might have been uncomfortable to tell the truth. While an incoming administration will often have every intention, some of it openly expressed, of reversing the policies of the previous one, the Flynn-Kislyak understandings go well beyond the norms governing the conduct of a policy transition from one administration to the next. This is especially the case where, as reported by The New York Times, the Obama administration had specifically requested that the Trump transition desist from sending conflicting signals to foreign officials before the inauguration and to include State Department personnel when contacting them.
But Flynn could have framed a response more honest and far less hazardous than outright lies. After all, Trump had publicly objected to the sanctions and had aggressively opposed the U.N. Security Council Resolution condemning Israel. Flynn could have taken the position that he merely affirmed to the Russians what they would have understood in any case about the campaigns policy positions. Awkward, yes. But he could have better weathered the questions about the propriety of these contacts, or their legality under the Logan Act, than the risks of lying to the FBI.
Why, then, the lies? It is certainly possible that Flynn was directed or encouraged to lie, with the president somehow believing that, in the worst case, he could work it out with Comey and that the FBI would let it go. Philip Bobbitt raised this possibility in May of this year, and the facts that have since come to light add support to his conjecture.
It would be remarkableand highly unlikelythat Flynn would fail to alert superiors that the FBI sought to interview him about the Kislyak phone calls. Flynn is a military man with rigorous training in following the chain of command. However inconsistent his performance on this score may have been over the years, the calls with senior transition officials in December in which he sought direction on the sanctions and U.N. matters, do not suggest that he had somehow gone rogue in his new national security advisory roleand not on this particular issue. A request from the FBI for an interview would have surely triggered a report up the chain. Was he counseledand if so, by whomon what he would say? Yet if Flynn somehow did not consult with his superiors prior to the interviews, it is well nigh inconceivable that he would not have done so afterward.
In any event, on Jan. 26, two days after Flynns FBI interview, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates informed the White House that Flynn had misrepresented his conversations within the administration. And if he lied to the vice president, among others, it would have been reasonable for the president and the senior staff to be concerned that he had not been truthful with the F.B.I. The White House counsel asked Yates specifically how Flynn did in the interview. Yates declined to respond, which should not have been reassuring.
It would not have been too late for the White House to look into the matter and direct Flynn to clean up the interview record. Instead, Flynn stuck to his story, only acknowledging weeks later on Feb. 9, through a spokesperson, that he could not recall such a discussion but couldnt be certain that the topic never came up. As late as Feb. 8, in a comment to the Washington Post, Flynn continued to deny that his conversation with Kislyak included an exchange about sanctions.
It is perhaps a striking coincidence, but the day after the Yates disclosure to the White House, Trump called the FBI director, invited him to dinner the same evening, and asked him for a pledge of loyalty. Then, on Feb. 14the day after Flynn resignedthe president asked Comey whether he might consider letting Flynn go. It is critical to bear in mind that the context for this specific request was Flynns misrepresentations about the Kislyak conversations, but in the administrations stated reasons for the resignation, the lies requiring Flynns departure were those told to the vice president. Had the president concluded that lying to the vice president was somehow a crimea suggestion that his White House counsel discounted in conversations with the acting attorney general?  Or did Trumps concern with Flynns legal exposure arise from knowledge that the former national security adviser had lied to the FBI?
The day after the plea deal, the president tweeted out the statement, for the first time, that he fired Flynn not only because he had lied to the vice president, but to the FBI too. Commentators responded immediately that this admission weakened his defense against an obstruction claim. It is not clear how much this tweet really adds to Trumps exposure: He was already amply exposed because whatever liability the president imagined that Flynn faced, he asked the FBI director to abandon a criminal investigation. The more pressing question is when the president knew that Flynn had liedor would lie. (In a curious turn in the tale, one of his lawyers, John Dowd, has taken responsibility for composing the tweet. Something new every day: Now the lawyers are writing tweets for the president about a criminal investigation.)
Another new statement from the White House gives still more reason to question what the president knew and when he knew itor perhaps more to the point, what the president did and when he did it. The White House is now insisting that the president was not aware that Flynn had discussed sanctions with Kislyak and that Mr. Flynn denied it to him. But why would the president not have known that Flynn had such a conversation, and why would Flynn have denied it? The Trump transition opposed the sanctions, and the president and his legal team have insisted that there was nothing at all illegal, much less improper, about including the topic in the transition contacts with the Russian government. There is now documented evidence that Flynn was not a rogue official but kept in close contact with senior transition officials on this very issue. And on the day of the Dec. 29 Flynn-Kislyak conversation, the president was scheduled to speak with his national security team at 5 p.m. Why, then, this surprising denial of the presidents knowledge of the contacts with the Russians about sanctions?
The answer lies in Trumps sensitivityand the reason for that sensitivityto any suggestion that he was paying off the Russians for their help in the campaign. That this was a concern during the transition is clear from the deputy national national security adviser K.T. McFarlands December 29 emails, which reflect a preoccupation the Democrats use of sanctions policy in discrediting Trumps victory. The fear was an assault on election legitimacy, as another adviser on the email chain wrote. So Trump was then, and remains today, stuck between both defending and seeking to disavow the Flynn-Kislyak discussion. But if Trump is worried about it now, he would have been just as concerned about it at the time, and he would have had a clear motive to keep it under wraps.
Whether this resulted eventually in Flynns telling an otherwise inexplicable lie to the FBI is an entirely reasonable question. It is just as, if not more, reasonable than believing that Flynn, who observed discipline on this issue in other respects, struck out on his own in an interview with the FBI and lied to the president about a discussion about sanctions with a foreign ambassador that clearly reflected transition policy (and that therefore, he had no reason to lie about).
This history, as far as it is known, does not clearly establish that the president or someone acting at his orders directed Flynn to lie to the FBI. But Trumps well-established instinct to exaggerate, conceal or fabricateand to expect others to do so on his behalfdoes not allow this possibility to be ruled out. It is a point on which the special counsel is sure to press those with knowledge of the events.
Regardless of how the evidence develops on what Trump knew before the Flynn conversation with the Russian Ambassador, his behavior thereafter is exceedingly unhelpful to him. He knew there were major problems with Flynns account of the FBI interview, and for two weeks, he acted only to protect his national security adviser, going so far as to attempt to call off an ongoing criminal investigation.
His solicitude for Flynn continued in the period after the investigation, and his private exhortation to Flynn that he stay strong now assumes fresh significance. Perhaps, as associates of the president have suggested, the president was applying a human touch, expressing concern for a well-liked supporter and associate experiencing dark days. A less benign explanation is that Flynn was paying a high price for entering into a conversation with the Russians that was consistent with the presidents wishes and directions, including Trumps the expectation that he not admit to this specific discussion.
The question remains: Why the lying? It seems that the Flynn lies make sense if connected to the others told by Trump and others with Trumps knowledge about the Russian relationship over the course of his campaign and presidency. Trump has boasted periodically about the transformative potential of an improved diplomatic and strategic relationship with Russia. But at the same time, he has categorically rejected suggestions that the relationship was personally or politically beneficial to him. Trump denied extensive business or financial ties to Russia and any political alliance built on mutual interest, which during the campaign included a shared animus toward Clinton and the objective of electing him. In numerous instances, Trumps claims have foundered on the known facts. He and those acting under this direction have engaged in an extensive pattern of misleading and flatly false statements about the Russia relationship.
Of course, one could conclude that Trump has misread his exposure on the Russia relationship and has lied to no purpose in the end except to cause avoidable problems for himself. In other words, as some defenders of the president may argue, it all looks worse than it is, and the president cannot help making it look worse. He goes overboard and heaps falsehood on top of falsehood, even where the truth would be less harmful than the lies.
Or one could just as plausibly conclude that once Trump had for all intents and purposes made another of his dealsthis time with a foreign government and for a benefit that was political, personal, or bothhe felt compelled to embark on a program of lies and to enlist the full cooperation of is aides and associates. This is a deal he could not admit to have made. And the lying, especially the lying under his direction, may be the best evidence so far on the public record that he thought he had a deal that had to remain deniedwhatever the risk of lying.
What very plausibly motivated the specific lies in the Flynn case was a need to deny specific, private commitments to Russia that tend to support the appearance of, and substantiate the affirmative case for, what might be termed a special understanding with the Putin regime. Perhaps any such indication would have seemed especially dangerous in the immediate aftermath of the campaign, when the Russians had been identified as aggressively intervening on his behalfand with his encouragementin the election. Trump may have felt extremely uneasy about the appearance of an American quo for the Russian quid.
The McFarland and other transition team emails in late December 2016 may lead some to argue that Trump was worried only about political perceptions and political attacks. But we now know that he may have been worried about more than that. His campaign had hosted a delegation from Moscow with an offer to help with the campaign; one of his foreign policy advisers had heard prior to their release about the thousands of emails secured by the Russian government; and his son had communicated with WikiLeaks about the most fruitful exploitation of the hacked material. And this is only what has surfaced publicly.
David French, writing about the Flynn plea agreement for the National Review, prefers to separate the lying from allegations of collusion and finds plenty of the former and no evidence for the latter. He concludes that the Flynn agreement is a body blow to the collusion theory. This judgment requires a certain confined perspective on the lies and their purpose, and the presidents role in the fabrications. It is also understandably the one that the president embraced the Saturday morning after the Flynn plea deal became public. He is confident that, as he told members of the press, what has been shown is no collusion, no collusion. There has been absolutely no collusion. He added: So we’re very happy.
It appears, then, that there is emerging a defense that a number of people told foolish lies, but nothing of more global significance. The president promoted this view specifically in another post-plea statement, by tweet: It was a shame that Flynn had lied to the FBI, because his actions during the transition were lawful. He ended the tweet: There was nothing to hide!
But perhaps there was. On a more comprehensive view, when examining the Flynn lies within the overall context of the stream of misrepresentations and known facts about the Russia relationship with Trump and his 2016 campaign, the Flynn episode is a good reason to expect intense, continuing investigative focus on the Russia connection. That is a more plausible ground for the lying, and the presidents involvement in it, than anxiety about the propriety, legality or political fallout from conversations with the Russians only weeks before taking officeand about issues on which his position was well known. The question of what has been generically called collusion is what has most concerned the president, what he has most vehemently challenged, and what would most motivate him to enlist others like Flynn in a program of concealments or falsehoods. It is useful in considering this possibility to once more recall the presidents dictation of the fallacious account of the Trump Tower campaign meeting with the Russian emissaries.
All of this activity to mislead or conceal may in the end prove futile. It is now Flynns turn to talk. Meanwhile, the presidents lawyers are quietly preparing for the worst, by arguing that even if there was collusion, it would not be a crime. The Flynn plea may move the case much closer to the moment when the president and his legal team will be required to test that theory in the real world conditions of a grand-jury room and then a court.

8:47 AM 12/4/2017 – Dear Mr. Clapper…

(From a “rank and file” and the very ordinary citizen)
Dear Mr. Clapper:
To say that the FBI is the “premier law enforcement organization in the world” implies the same underlying logic as to say that “Mr. Clapper is the most perfect gentleman in the world”. Both statements might very well be true, to put the issues of the criteria aside. However, it is also indisputable that the biggest “spy scandal” in the U.S., and maybe the World History, occurred on Mr. Clapper’s watch, and at least in part due to the actions, inactions, or very questionable, in retrospect, actions on the part of the FBI and their leadership groups, and their interminable power struggles.
I would dare to say, Sir, that Mr. Clapper was hired by the American people (via President Obama) to be the country’s Chief Intelligence Officer, and not just, and not only, and not “first of all”, a “perfect gentleman”, which he, without any doubts, is. And therefore it was his direct duty to know what was going on. Apparently, the same error of the selective and the self-imposed blindness or the peculiarity in judgment interferes with your objective evaluation of the FBI and their role, which still is not fully known yet and which still is under investigation in and by itself.
It is also puzzling, to say the least, why the FBI and Mr. Comey did not report to you (as you testified) about the “Trump Investigation” (call it by whatever official name) right when it was started by the FBI in July of 2016, especially in the light of the extraordinary importance of this matter and its possible implications.
And this is just to comment briefly on this subject. Call them anything you wish, this scandal is the FBI’s and your responsibility and the hu-u-uge mistake, or the series of them, and neither of you should even try to disown them.
Best Regards,
Michael Novakhov

My Opinion - Michael Novakhov

We do need the comprehensive, in-depth, objective investigation, reassessment, and reevaluation of the FBI – M.N.

In my humble opinion, we do need the comprehensive, in-depth, objective investigation, reassessment, and reevaluation of the FBI from the times of its inception and establishment: its actions, inactions, and mis-actions, its place and role in the society, and its future roles, not in a “police” state or the “deep” state, but in a free and democratic state. Their mistakes, dysfunctions, and vulnerabilities have to come to the full light, and they have to be assessed and prevented, regardless of the FBI’s present particular roles in the investigations of the current Administration.
Personally, besides the FBI”s blatant and undue interference in political matters, I am especially concerned about the FBI’s interference in Science, and in Psychiatry. For example, the FBI’s interference in Anthropology is the well known and the well-established fact.
The FBI’s darling “special”, “professional”, and “VIP” informants made the nice careers for themselves in Psychiatry, including the leadership positions in the American Psychiatric Association, not because of their intellectual or other abilities, but because of their special affiliation with the FBI, and informing on the researchers who have these abilities. Some “psychiatric Mata Haries” (minus the looks) apparently would not even stop at using their sexual connections for these purposes.
I did write about this previously. These matters are very important, and they have to be investigated vigorously, to the utmost depth, openly, and publically. With this undue and ugly interference, the FBI destroys (possibly, sometimes at the adversaries’ designs and behest) the spirit of the scientific research and the fabric of this society. These criminal activities have to be uncovered, reported, and stopped, and the culprits have to be properly punished.

FBI, get your hands off the Sciences!!!

A vital reminder of the importance of academic freedom, Threatening Anthropology offers a meticulously detailed account of how U.S. Cold War surveillance damaged the field of anthropology. David H. Price reveals how dozens of activist anthropologists were publicly and privately persecuted during the Red Scares of the 1940s and 1950s. He shows that it was not Communist Party membership or Marxist beliefs that attracted the most intense scrutiny from the fbi and congressional committees but rather social activism, particularly for racial justice. Demonstrating that the fbi’s focus on anthropologists lessened as activist work and Marxist analysis in the field tapered off, Price argues that the impact of McCarthyism on anthropology extended far beyond the lives of those who lost their jobs. Its messages of fear and censorship had a pervasive chilling effect on anthropological investigation. As critiques that might attract government attention were abandoned, scholarship was curtailed.
Price draws on extensive archival research including correspondence, oral histories, published sources, court hearings, and more than 30,000 pages of fbi and government memorandums released to him under the Freedom of Information Act. He describes government monitoring of activism and leftist thought on college campuses, the surveillance of specific anthropologists, and the disturbing failure of the academic community—including the American Anthropological Association—to challenge the witch hunts. Today the “war on terror” is invoked to license the government’s renewed monitoring of academic work, and it is increasingly difficult for researchers to access government documents, as Price reveals in the appendix describing his wrangling with Freedom of Information Act requests. A disquieting chronicle of censorship and its consequences in the past, Threatening Anthropology is an impassioned cautionary tale for the present.

British security services are vastly outgunned by the Russian counterintelligence threat

mikenova shared this story from Politics.

Theresa May and PutinRussian President Vladimir Putin meets British PM Theresa May at the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, in 2016. Reuters / Sputnik Photo Agency

  • MI6 has elevated Russia to “tier one” threat status.
  • The head of MI6 has told NATO its response to Russian interference in Europe and the West needs to get sharper.
  • Russia has at least 700,000 security and intelligence personnel on its payrolls.
  • Britain has only about 16,000 equivalent  people in its special security services.
  • NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force is outnumbered six to one by Russian forces.

LONDON — MI6, the secret intelligence service, has reclassified Russia as a “tier one” threat, alongside Islamic terrorism, after years of regarding the nation as a second-rung security issue. Back in 2010, Russia was not even named in the British National Security Council’s annual strategic defence and security review. In 2015, Russia was mentioned but not named specifically as a top priority. Only in 2016was Russia once again called out — as it was during the Cold War — as a serious threat to national security, in the security review.
Alex Younger, the head of MI6, went to NATO last month to tell the joint forces that Europe and the US need to get their act together when it comes to opposing Russia, according to Edward Lucas writing in The Times.
The British people have been slow to wake up to Russia’s interference in domestic politics. For years, the Russian government has funded misinformation around the Brexit referendum, oligarchs have invested in the London property market via offshore financial vehicles, and Russian espionage services have used the UK as a location for assassinating their political opponents.
But the intelligence community has become increasingly alarmed at the boldness of Russian interventions inside Britain. Fourteen people are suspect to have been killed in Britain by Russian spiessince 2003, according to BuzzFeed.
Now MI6 will no longer stand idly by while Putin acts with a “sense of impunity,” Younger told NATO in November.
But Younger has a problem: The sheer size of the Russian security and intelligence apparatus. Britain has about 16,000 people devoted to intelligence and security. By contrast, the Russian state employs between 705,000 and 940,000 people across its various security, intelligence and counter-intelligence agencies, according to Victor Madeira, a Russia expert at the Institute for Statecraft, who testified to the House of Commons defence committee. That’s 42 times as many, for a country whose population is roughly twice the size of the UK’s.

  • TOTAL Russian security agency staffing (ca 2006-2015) 705,000-940,000
  • FSB: 387,000
  • SVR: 13,000
  • GRU: 280,000-480,000
  • Special Communications and Information Service (Spetssvyaz): 53,000-120,000
  • TOTAL British security agency staffing (2015): 16,586
  • MI5, MI6, GCHQ: 12,080
  • DI, NSS, JIO, OSCT: ~4,506

Of course, not all those people are deployed against the UK. The US remains Russia’s great enemy, Madeira told Business Insider. And many of them will be employed in low-level work, such as border guards. But even so, “you’re talking orders of magnitude [over the UK] that the number of people that Russia can deploy,” Madeira says.
For instance, Russia has a massive official propaganda budget. “The resources we have collectively in the West even since Crimea, since Ukraine, that we’ve thrown at the problem are minuscule compared to what Russia does officially and unofficially, to the tune of annual budgets anywhere from $600 million to $1 billion, the Russians spend on the RTs and the Sputniks and outlets like this,” Madeira testified.
Russia has maintained that force because of the “mindset” of the Russian state, which has a completely different conception of the post-Cold War “peace” than Western nations do. In the West, peacetime is regarded as a dividend to be celebrated, a time to relax and prosper. But inside the Russian state, which is still run largely by former Soviet intelligence officials, peace is regarded as the period you use to prepare for the next inevitable conflict.
The Russian security apparatus, in other words, is in a constant state of war preparation in way that the British government is not.
“Russia continuously conducts strategic influence operations, especially in what NATO sees as ‘peacetime’, because to Moscow that is when the foundations of wartime success are laid,” Madeira wrote to the Commons defence committee. “Recent Russian security and intelligence budgets have grown annually by an estimated 15%-20% – with spending going to operations, not infrastructure.”
“That mindset in the Russian security and intelligence services remains that way today,” he told Business Insider.
It’s not just that the spies are outnumbered, either. NATO is probably not equipped to fend off a surprise attack from Russia, the defence committee heard last year. On that panel, MP Bob Stewart asked Igor Sutyagin, of the Royal United Services Institute, if NATO was capable of reacting in time to a sudden, unprovoked military assault from Russia.
“The problem is that the NATO Very High Readiness [Joint Task] Forces are not enough to cope … the mobility, even if they will be there, they will be outnumbered six to one which is very serious,” Sutyagin said. “Secondly, the forces, even if deployed have some structural deficiencies … the Western side might be unprepared to deal with these environments.”

Russia investigation sheds new light on Jared Kushner’s involvement with Moscow

mikenova shared this story .

The expanding federal investigation into Russian interference in last year’s election is shining new light on the central role played by one member of President Trump’s inner circle — his son-in-law and top advisor Jared Kushner — in reaching out to Moscow.
The latest disclosure — that even before Trump took office Kushner directed campaign foreign policy advisor Michael Flynn to try to persuade Russia to quash a United Nations resolution — is one example of numerous Kushner contacts with Moscow and meetings with Russian intermediaries now under scrutiny by investigators for special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.
Kushner, a 36-year-old former Manhattan real estate developer and Washington neophyte, may be key as Mueller pursues the still-unresolved mystery of whether Trump’s campaign had improper dealings with Russia, a charge that Kushner denies.
Revelations about Kushner’s Russia contacts have been dribbling out for months, forcing Kushner and other Trump aides who denied or downplayed them to repeatedly backtrack.
But with Flynn now cooperating with Mueller’s investigators, Kushner’s role in handling outreach to foreign governments for Trump is likely to get even more scrutiny from investigators. Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the FBI about his own Russia contacts.
Publicly Trump insists he is not worried, telling reporters Saturday there had been “absolutely no collusion” with Moscow, but adding, “We’ll see what happens.”
In the wake of Flynn’s plea deal, Democrats on both the House and Senate intelligence committees said they wanted Kushner, who appeared in private before both panels in July, to return to answer new questions about his dealings with Russian officials and intermediaries from Moscow.
“Mike Flynn wasn’t acting as a free agent. He was acting at the behest of very senior people close to the president or the president himself,” said Rep. Adam B. Schiff of Burbank, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. “If Mr. Kushner was involved in that, he’d have a lot to tell us that he hasn’t told us so far.”
Kushner’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, declined to comment on Kushner’s Russia contacts.
Kushner has described himself as an overworked and inexperienced campaign aide who was “forced to make changes on the fly” when it came to Russia.
“I did not collude with Russia, nor do I know of anyone else in the campaign who did so,” Kushner said after July’s closed-door meeting with investigators from the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Trump cycled through a cadre of high-level aides during the presidential campaign, but Kushner remained a trusted advisor with one particularly unassailable credential — he is family through his marriage to Trump’s older daughter, Ivanka.
After running his real estate company like a family business, Trump saw no reason to change course while campaigning or after winning the White House. Kushner joined the administration and received a vast portfolio of responsibilities, including overhauling the federal government with the newly created Office of American Innovation and pursuing a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
He has insisted that his initial failure to report his meetings with the Russians or any other foreigners on forms required for a government security clearance was not deliberate. He blamed an aide who he said had mistakenly submitted the form, known as an SF-86, before it was complete, and said that he later updated it.
As a trusted advisor, Kushner was the intermediary with foreign officials, a role that led to several contacts with Russian officials, either directly or through intermediaries.
According to court papers disclosed on Friday, Flynn was directed by a “very senior member” of Trump’s transition team — identified by a former official as Kushner — to lobby Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and officials from other foreign governments in an attempt to delay or defeat a United Nations Security Council resolution critical of Israel in December 2016.
Trump had publicly opposed the resolution, saying it “puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.”
But the Trump team’s attempts to block the resolution was at odds with the position taken by the Obama administration, which still occupied the White House and planned to let the resolution pass.
The attempts to influence the vote, which a person familiar with the transition described as a collaborative endeavor by multiple high-ranking members of Trump’s team, did not succeed. Kislyak said Russia would not vote against the resolution, which passed after the United States abstained.
Earlier that month, at a meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Kislyak asked Kushner whether the Trump transition office had a secure telephone line that Trump’s aides could use to talk to Russian generals about the war in Syria.
Because none was available, Kushner said he asked about using one at the Russian Embassy instead to conduct “direct discussions” with Moscow.
He said that after Kislyak, who was recalled to Moscow last summer, told him that was impossible, they agreed to follow up after the inauguration. Kushner did not explain why the Trump team did not simply ask to use a secure U.S. government line.
In contrast to Flynn, who admitted this week in court that he and Kislyak had discussed U.S. sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration after the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, Kushner has said that he did not discuss lifting the sanctions.
Kushner met Kislyak in April 2016 at a foreign policy speech by Trump at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.
Kushner also held a Dec. 13 meeting with Sergey Gorkov, head of the state-owned Vnesheconombank, Russia’s national development bank. He said he took the meeting at Kislyak’s urging because Gorkov had a “direct relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian bank described the session in March as part of a new outreach to “a number of representatives of the largest banks and business establishments of the United States, including Jared Kushner, the head of Kushner Companies.” Kushner, by contrast, said he and Gorkov did not discuss “private business of any kind.”
In testimony to Congress last summer, Kushner also denied having any contact with WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, during the campaign, according to a statement from his lawyer, and said he could not recall anyone from the campaign having such contacts.
WikiLeaks was responsible for releasing hacked emails that U.S. intelligence agencies say were obtained through Russia’s attempt to interfere with the presidential election.
But Kushner was forced to backtrack when the Atlantic magazine revealed last month that the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., forwarded a message from WikiLeaks to Kushner and others.
Lowell said his client did not respond to the email and was not in touch with WikiLeaks.
“Mr. Kushner had no contacts with that organization,” he wrote in a letter last month to the Senate Judiciary Committee after the panel’s bipartisan leadership requested more documents from him.
Kushner also attended a June 9, 2016, meeting at Trump Tower with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian attorney introduced to Trump Jr. as “a Russian government attorney” who was part of “its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”
The emails said she could provide documents that “would incriminate” Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, and would be “very useful to your father.” Kushner insisted he showed up to the meeting without reading the emails about who she was and left early, calling it a “waste of time.”

Who is KT McFarland? Donald Trump’s pick for deputy national security adviser

mikenova shared this story .

This article was originally published on November 28, 2016 and republished after reports of KT McFarland’s involvement in the Trump-Russia probe.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has filled two more top administration posts.
The incoming president has tapped Fox News analyst Kathleen “KT” McFarland to serve as deputy national security adviser, and campaign attorney Donald McGahn as White House counsel.
Trump confirmed the picks Friday in a statement from his transition team.
He cited McFarland’s “tremendous experience and innate talent,” which he said would “complement the fantastic team we are assembling.”
Trump had already tapped retired Army Gen. Michael Flynn as his national security adviser.
McFarland has most recently served as a Fox News analyst. She served in various posts under former Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan.
While on Fox News McFarland has offered analysis on various issues of national security, some of which has raised an eyebrow or two over the years.
In 2012 McFarland said to, “Either bomb Iran, or let Iran get the bomb.”
In response to the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, McFarland called for more racial profiling, while blaming the attacks on the failings of political correctness. Candidate Trump echoed McFarland’s sentiments in 2016 following the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, insisting that the U.S. should adapt “Israeli style” racial profiling.
In a segment with Sean Hannity on Fox News, McFarland defended waterboarding saying, “It’s not torture, but even if it is torture, it’s worth doing.”
While discussing Saudi Arabia’s support for the Iran nuclear agreement, McFarland inisted Saudi Arabia was being duplicitous, based upon her reasons that “they are Arabs, they are not going to say something to your face that will upset you… it’s not what they say, it’s what they do.”
McFarland whose national security experience goes as far back as serving on Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council Staff in the Ford administration, wrote a column in 2013 praising Vladimir Putin for his role in the Syrian conflict. She even went as far as to suggest Putin should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
McFarland’s position does not require Senate confirmation.

Trump Attacks The FBI On Twitter, Urges Followers To Sue ABC News

Just another Sunday morning for the president on social media.
Donald Trumps lawyer may have just sent himself to prison too

Thus far, four of Donald Trumps advisers have been arrested in his Russia scandal, and two of them have already pleaded guilty. It matters greatly here that Ive said pleaded guilty and not pled guilty but well get to that in a moment. The upshot is that a whole lot more of Trumps people are going to end up in prison by the time this is over. As of yesterday, Trumps own personal attorney may end up being one of them.
Its painfully clear that Trump wrote his own tweet yesterday in which he confessed to felony obstruction of justice. But upon realizing his grave error, Trump incredibly claimed the tweet had been written by his attorney John Dowd. Today, Dowd publicly backed Trump up on this by asserting that he did indeed write the tweet in question. The trouble: if it can be legally proven that Dowd didnt write the tweet, he may be on his way to prison.
Trump wrote the tweet. Even the dumbest of attorneys would never be clueless enough to write a tweet confessing that his client committed a felony. Thats simply not possible. In addition, every first year law student has it drilled into them that the proper legal phrase is pleaded guilty yet the tweet in question says pled guilty. Trumps attorey did not write this tweet, yet hes claiming he did.
There is a limit when it comes to what an attorney is allowed to say and do with regard to a clients crimes. The general sentiment youll hear in the legal community is that its okay if you know where your client buried the bodies, but its not okay if you helped your client bury the bodies. It appears Trumps attorney is now lying about his own actions in an attempt at getting his clients public confession thrown out.
This gets into legally murky, and very dangerous, territory. If a judge rules that John Dowd has to testify whether he wrote the tweet, hell have to choose between perjuring himself or admitting he tried to help his client cover up a crime. Attorneys went to prison in Richard Nixons Watergate scandal. Is it about to happen again in Donald Trumps treason scandal?

Has Mitch McConnell cut a grand bargain to oust Donald Trump?

Late on Friday night, we witnessed something which shouldn’t have been possible. The Republican Senators who opposed the criminally corrupt tax legislation all lined up to dutifully vote for it. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and others committed career suicide by marrying themselves to the most unpopular legislation of all time, and they’ll have difficulty ever getting elected again. I’ve been thinking about how Mitch McConnell convinced them to do it.
Let’s be clear: the holdout Senators who reluctantly voted for the tax scam aren’t stupid. They did it with their eyes wide open. Yes, they wanted to please their wealthy donors. But they know full well that they probably just lost their reelection bids in the process. So why would these Senators throw away everything just to help pass legislation they don’t believe in and didn’t want to be attached to? It just so happens that the biggest holdouts on the tax bill are generally Donald Trump’s biggest detractors in the Republican Party. There is seemingly only one thing McConnell could have offered them.
Let’s be clear: no matter what the mainstream media says to you to try to convince you that there’s still some doubt about the outcome, Donald Trump is finished. I can’t tell you when it’ll happen, but Michael Flynn’s deal cements Trump’s eventual ouster from office. The Republicans in Congress know it too. Their legislative agenda is now finished until Trump is gone, because his unraveling and downfall will become the only focus in the meantime. At this point the GOP is better off ousting Trump now, before he ends up causing them to get wiped out in the midterms.
Mitch McConnell, sociopathic criminal that he may be, is politically savvy enough to know this. He also knows that his Republican Party is about to get dragged down into the Russia scandal, thanks to this week’s media reports that Donald Trump asked a number of Republican Senators to sabotage the investigation. The best move, and in fact only logical move, for the GOP is to oust Trump and do it soon. McConnell knows this.
So I’m left to wonder aloud if Mitch McConnell might have cut a grand bargain with the holdout Republican Senators. They voted for his tax scam in order to appease the party’s wealthy donors, and in return, McConnell agreed to oust Donald Trump and let them take credit for it. That way these holdout Republicans can go into reelection bragging about how they virtuously ousted the criminal Trump, and perhaps it’s enough to distract voters from their own criminal participation in the tax scam.
I’m not working with any inside information here, just thinking out loud and asking a question that needs to be asked. Perhaps it’s a stretch to think that the dysfunctional Republican Party could have pulled off such a deal in secret. But if not, then the only other explanation is that the holdout Republicans in the Senate decided to throw away their consciences, their reputations, and their careers for no reason at all.

Everyone piles on as Donald Trump launches into his most cartoonish meltdown yet

We all knew it was coming. A day and a half after Michael Flynn finalized a plea deal to save his own son and destroy Donald Trump in the process, Trump went off the deep end for all to see. This time around it was arguably his most cartoonish meltdown to date, as he struggled to get his message across and inadvertently confessed to at least one felony along the way. This led observers on all sides to pile on as Trump finished himself off.
Trump began his meltdown by asserting that Michael Flynn’s life has been ruined, when the reality is that Flynn is potentially looking at a very light sentence because he has evidence that will ruin Trump’s life. Trump’s first tweet read “So General Flynn lies to the FBI and his life is destroyed, while Crooked Hillary Clinton, on that now famous FBI holiday interrogation with no swearing in and no recording, lies many times…and nothing happens to her? Rigged system, or just a double standard?”
MSNBC analyst Malcolm Nance quickly pegged the meltdown for what it was: “Standby for trouble: Trump knows he is trapped. He will lash out soon.” Meanwhile, Colonel Morris Davis took a sarcastic approach: “Donald Trump unleashes another string of presidential style tweets to uplift the American people and reassure the world that its most heavily armed country is in stable and reliable hands.”
Earlier in the day, Donald Trump tweeted that he knew Michael Flynn had lied to the FBI, and in the process confessed to felony obstruction of justice. Trump then falsely claimed that his attorney John Dowd wrote the tweet. After Trump’s late night meltdown began, former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti seized on the moment, replying “Did Dowd write this one too?” As the night went on, Trump began ranting even more thoroughly about Hillary Clinton in increasingly incoherent fashion and the night is still young.

Window on Eurasia — New Series: Russias Population Prospects Now So Dire that Scholar Calls for a Cheka for Demographics
Paul Goble
Staunton, December 2 In an open letter to Vladimir Putin, demographer Yury Krupnov says that the demographic situation in Russia is rapidly becoming so dire that the Kremlin can only reverse it be creating an Extraordinary Demographic Commission or a Cheka for Demography.
Krupnov says that he fully supports Putins call for doing more to promote Russias demographic well-being but says that he cannot fully agree that the Kremlin leaders idea of providing funds to families on the birth of even their first child will be sufficient or even effective (ruskline.ru/news_rl/2017/12/02/my_obvalno_padaem_v_demograficheskuyu_yamu/).
Giving mothers 10,000 rubles (150 US dollars) a month after the birth of a child, he says, wont lead more Russians to have more children and thus will not save the country from a deepening demographic catastrophe, one brought on Krupnov says by the failure of the government to act on Putins 2012 call for making three-child families the norm.
Instead, he says, the Russian authorities have behaved in ways that make childless or only one-child families the norm for Russians.  To reverse that, Krupnov argues, the government should instead provide funds for those who have a third, fourth or fifth child in order to prompt people to have the first and second in order to get support for more later.
According to Krupnov, who has long beaten the drums for larger families, Russia is rapidly falling into a demographic hole which will be just as deep if not deeper than the hole of the end of the 1990s, when the expression, the Russian cross, emerged.
Krupnov says he fears that officials have been misleading Putin about just how bad things are and are likely to become.  As a result, the real horror of the situation is not just how serious things have become but rather the failure of the authorities to discuss it seriously and not engage in ideological fantasies about supposed improvements.
In this extraordinary situation, he continues, I consider it critically necessary to organize a serious, deep and open discussion of what demographic policy the country needs and via this to sharply push forward and deepen the understanding of the demographic problem as a priority for the country.
To that end, Krupnov suggests the formation of an Extraordinary Demographic Commission (CheDemKa) which in the course of approximately a year could come up with an adequate complex of measures for the demographic salvation of the country.  Such measures given the seriousness of the problem will necessarily be extraordinary.
Today, Krupnov says, it should be obvious to all that the main problem of the country is in demography and thus is it is entirely appropriate to call for an Extraordinary Commission to address that problem.
Putins speech earlier this week has led others to focus on just how bad the demographic situation in Russia now is, a situation in which the declining number of women in prime child-bearing ages is combining with changing family size preferences and the impact of the economic crisis to drive birthrates down.
See for example the discussions of the problem at svpressa.ru/blogs/article/187512/,
nakanune.ru/news/2017/12/02/22491294/and nakanune.ru/articles/113511/. But three things about Krupnovs letter are striking. First, he attacks the government in order to try to get Putin on his side, the latest of the good tsar-bad boyar view that l so much of Russian thinking.
Second, by talking about a Cheka, he equates the demographic problem now to the threats to the Soviet state in its earliest days, an equation that will likely lead more people to focus on the demographic disaster that Russia is facing and that there are very few means the government has at its disposal to address.
And third, and most important, by calling for a Cheka in this area, Krupnov has appealed to one of Putins core views on how to act: not by gradual effort but by extraordinary intervention, an approach that has its roots in the Soviet past but that continues to define his approach, however ineffective it is likely to be in this area as well as in many others.

Voice of America: McMaster: ‘Increasing’ Possibility of War with North Korea
The White House national security advisor says the  possibility of war with impoverished, but nuclear-armed North Korea is “increasing every day.” “There are ways to address this problem short of armed conflict,” H.R. McMaster said Saturday, “but it is a race because he’s getting closer and closer and there’s not much time left,” in a reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. North Korea announced last week that it can now hit the U.S. mainland with a warhead, after its test-firing of a new intercontinental ballistic missile. Media reports say the Pentagon is looking at U.S. west coast sites where additional defense systems can be installed, following the North Korean threat of a strike on the U.S.    The Reuters news agency says the defenses would likely include Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missiles, similar to those deployed in South Korea. “The newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-15 has been successfully test-launched according to the political decision and strategic judgement of the Workers’ Party of Korea, read an announcer Wednesday on North Koreas state-run KRT television. Following previous launches, the North has claimed its projectiles can hit any part of the continental United States, but this would be the first time it would be able to do so with this new type of upgraded missile, which both North Korean and U.S. officials said could fly higher than the ones the country has tested earlier. McMaster urged China to slap a total oil embargo on North Korea, as a way of deterring fuel missile launches. “You can’t shoot a missile without fuel,” he said. North Korea, meanwhile, characterized the U.S. and South Korea as “warmongers” Sunday, a day ahead of the U.S. and South Korea’s largest-ever joint air exercises.     The North’s ruling party Rodong newspaper said Sunday the joint exercises are “an open, all-out provocation against” North Korea that could “lead to a nuclear war any moment.” It is not clear if Pyongyang has mastered the capability of miniaturizing and mounting a nuclear warhead on an ICBM, which South Korean officials have said could happen within a matter of months.   Analysts also question North Koreas technical mastery of ICBM re-entry, which plays a key role in targeting.  In the event of a launch at the U.S. mainland, U.S. missile defense systems would be employed.
