For months we were forced to listen to doomsday proclamations that if Donald Trump announced a presidential campaign, it would somehow mean he was going to avoid DOJ criminal prosecution. During that same period of time we were forced to listen to similar doomsday proclamations about how if Elon Musk reinstated Trump’s Twitter account, it would somehow hand Trump the 2024 election. But here’s the thing: nothing works that way.

Days ago Trump announced a 2024 campaign. Shortly thereafter, the DOJ did what in hindsight it had been planning to after the midterms whether Trump made an announcement or not: it appointed a Special Counsel to prosecute Trump.

Last night Musk, who is now unraveling by the hour, decided – based on the results of a bot ridden Twitter poll – to reinstate Trump’s account. And you know what came of it? Nothing. It probably knocked another few billion off Musk’s collapsing net worth, but beyond that, it was a non-event. Trump is not somehow magically in a position to win anything. He’s still on a path to be indicted and thrown in prison long before the 2024 election cycle begins.

It’s worth taking a moment to think about how wrong, and how ridiculous, this kind of doomsday punditry always ends up being. Trump was never going to get off the hook or back in the game via magic wand. The pundits who hyped this nonsense are either completely clueless or are intentionally trying to manipulate your fear. It’s time to stop falling for it.
