Google-owned YouTube has joined the ranks of other tech giants like Amazon and Apple, striking a massive sports deal.
YouTube has landed the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket in a multi-year agreement, YouTube and the NFL announced on Thursday. The deal begins with the 2023 NFL season, at which point Sunday Ticket will be available as an add-on to YouTube TV or through YouTube Primetime Channels, the joint statement said.
YouTube will pay at least $2 billion per year, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported. The deal is for seven years, according to the Journal.
YouTube declined to comment to Insider on the reported terms of the deal.
NFL Sunday Ticket allows viewers to watch NFL Sunday games that are outside of their local market. The package was highly sought after, with Disney, Apple, and Amazon reportedly in the bidding process earlier this year.
The deal is another win for tech titans looking to make a bigger play in sports. NFL games are still some of the most-watched telecasts on broadcast networks in any given year.
It follows the likes of Amazon and Apple snagging coveted sports packages. Amazon Prime Video is now the home of Thursday Night Football, and Apple TV+ streams Friday night MLB games.
Amazon has been happy with Thursday Night Football’s performance. This seasons debut game’s live stream averaged 13 million viewers on Prime Video, according to Nielsen.
