Scholz downplays differences on Ukraine on South America tour

2023-01-30T04:10:30Z

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sought to drum up support for Ukraine during his first South American tour although differences with his hosts emerged, with Argentine President Alberto Fernandez declaring the region was not planning on sending weapons.

On his three-day trip, Scholz has sought to stress unity, noting all three countries he is visiting – Argentina, Chile and Brazil – condemned Russia’s invasion at the United Nations General Assembly last year.

The fallout of the war and Western sanctions on Russia such as soaring food and energy prices, however, have hit the region particularly hard, raising questions over the West’s approach.

Fernandez said in a joint news conference with Scholz in Buenos Aires on Saturday that Argentina, like Germany, wanted to help restore peace as soon as possible.

But asked if Argentina would send weapons to Ukraine to fend off Russian troops like Germany and its western allies had, he gave an emphatic no.

“Argentina and Latin America are not planning to send weapons to Ukraine or any other conflict zone,” he said.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric did not refer to the war in his opening statements at a news conference with Scholz in Santiago de Chile on Sunday, focusing instead on economic cooperation, particularly in the commodities sector.

In both countries, Scholz visited memorials to the victims of their military dictatorships that he said underscored the need to fight for democracy and freedom.

“At this memorial to the many victims of the dictatorship here I cannot help but think of the young people who are being killed in Iran because they are fighting for freedom and a better life,” he said in Buenos Aires.

German government officials say it is understandable Latin American countries, so far away from Europe and with such different concerns, have diverging views on the war, but highlighted the importance of continuing to convey Berlin’s perspective.

Scholz heads on Monday to Brazil to become the first Western leader to meet with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva since his inauguration.

European wants to re-set relations with South America’s largest country following the exit of the divisive far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The resilience of democracy is likely to be high on the agenda for talks given the storming of government buildings earlier this month by Bolsonaro supporters.

Still, differences can once more be expected.

Last year, Lula said Russia never should have invaded Ukraine, but added Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was as much to blame for the war as Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Chiefs survive Bengals to reach Super Bowl, Eagles thrash 49ers

2023-01-30T04:23:03Z

Eagles fans took the streets of Philadelphia on Sunday (January 29) after their team beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship.

A last-minute field goal saw the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 at the AFC Championship and punch their ticket to the Super Bowl on Sunday, setting up a showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high-ankle sprain only days earlier but produced a heroic sprint to get the Chiefs the first down with the game tied and mere seconds left on the clock.

An unnecessary roughness call on defensive end Joseph Ossai, who shoved Mahomes out of bounds, put kicker Harrison Butker within range and the Chiefs had their revenge a year after Cincinnati ended their path to the Super Bowl.

“The work’s not done,” head coach Andy Reid said to a euphoric Kansas City crowd. “We’ve got a few practices here and then we’ve got to take care of business.”

The Bengals rolled into icy cold Kansas City on a 10-game winning streak but struggled at first to keep their cool amid the ear-splitting cheers from the home fans, as a relentless Chiefs defense sacked Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow four times in the first half.

But the game turned into an epic duel as Burrow leveled the score with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins in the third quarter and Mahomes retaliated, connecting with Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the end zone.

A touchdown on a two-yard sneak by Samaje Perine put the Bengals back in contention, but the Chiefs would not be denied their third trip four years to the Super Bowl.

The win set up a tantalizing showdown between the Chiefs’ powerhouse offense and one of the most devastating defenses in the league, after the Eagles thrashed the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship on Sunday.

A pair of rushing touchdowns from Miles Sanders helped the Philadelphia Eagles clinch it, after injuries hit San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy and backup Josh Johnson.

“This is something you dream about as a kid,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said in televised remarks. “Just to be able to do this together with a bunch of men that love each other, that have connected to each other, that would do anything for each other, it’s pretty sweet.”

The Eagles set the tone early, converting on fourth down on the opening drive with a sensational one-handed catch by receiver DeVonta Smith before the Pro Bowler Sanders scrambled six yards into the end zone.

The situation went from bad to worse for San Francisco as Purdy left the game with an elbow injury after a strip sack by Eagles’ linebacker Haason Reddick during the 49ers’ first possession.

Running back Christian McCaffrey broke through a swarm of defenders to put the Niners on the board in the second quarter but Sanders wrested back the lead immediately with a 13-yard touchdown.

Johnson, the Niners’ fourth-string quarterback after injuries previously sidelined starters Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, fumbled the ball late in the second quarter and the Eagles recovered, sending a shiver of despair through the away team as Boston Scott ran it into the end zone.

Purdy went back into the contest after Johnson smacked his head on the turf but was ineffective against the razor-sharp Eagles, as quarterback Jalen Hurts leapt into the end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter and Jake Elliott made a 31-yard field goal in the fourth.

“This is a special city,” said Hurts, 24, before leading the euphoric crowd at Lincoln Financial Field in singing the Eagles’ fight song, “Fly, Eagles Fly”. “We’ve got one more.”

Trump says it’s ‘very disloyal’ of Ron DeSantis to even consider running against him in 2024

  • On Saturday, Donald Trump slammed the prospect of Ron DeSantis running against him in 2024.
  • Trump said it would be “very disloyal” of DeSantis to run for president.
  • “To me it is, it’s always about loyalty,” Trump said. “But for a lot of people, it’s not about that.”

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump hit out at his would-be 2024 rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“So then when I hear he might run, you know, I consider that very disloyal,” Trump told reporters on board his plane, per CNN. “But, it’s not about loyalty — to me it is, it’s always about loyalty. But for a lot of people, it’s not about that.”

Trump also claimed without substantiation that DeSantis would not have been elected governor of Florida without his support.

“Number one, he never would have gotten the nomination. And number two, he never would have beat his Democrat opponent,” Trump said.

—Ron Filipkowski 🇺🇦 (@RonFilipkowski) January 29, 2023

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he is responsible for DeSantis’ political success. In June, the former president said he was “very responsible” for DeSantis’ 2018 win. Over the weekend, Trump again took the credit for DeSantis getting elected, while brushing off questions about the governor being ahead of him in the polls.

“He won’t be leading, I got him elected,” Trump said on Saturday, per Politico. “I’m the one that chose him.”

Trump in November announced his 2024 run. On Saturday, he hit the campaign trail with events in South Carolina and New Hampshire.

DeSantis has not yet announced a 2024 run, but he has hinted that he might run for president. Notably, during a debate in October, DeSantis did not commit to serving another four full years as Florida’s governor.

Trump, meanwhile, has already gone on the offensive against DeSantis. In November, Trump dubbed the governor “Ron DeSanctimonious” during a rally, and blasted him as “average” on social media. The nickname “Ron DeSanctimonious” also found its way into one of Trump’s Truth Social rants on Sunday night.

Trump also fired a warning shot at DeSantis during a January 16 podcast, saying he will “handle” DeSantis if the governor runs against him.

DeSantis has refrained from hitting back at Trump. In November, DeSantis told people to “chill out” about the prospect of a GOP civil war between him and the former president.

Representatives for Trump and Desantis did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

Hurts, Eagles soar into Super Bowl, rout 49ers for NFC title

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts had one of Philadelphia’s four rushing touchdowns and the Eagles soared into the Super Bowl, forcing both of San Francisco’s quarterbacks out of the game with injuries and beating the wounded 49ers 31-7 in the NFC championship game on Sunday.

The Eagles, who won the Super Bowl five years ago with a different coach and quarterback, will try to do it again behind the formidable duo of Hurts and coach Nick Sirianni. Philadelphia will play either the Cincinnati Bengals or former Eagles coach Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs.

Miles Sanders ran for two touchdowns and linebacker Haason Redick made the hit that forced 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy out of the game with an elbow injury. Redick also recovered a fumble by Purdy’s replacement, Josh Johnson, who later suffered a concussion.

That forced Purdy back into the game, but his injury was clearly a factor as the 49ers all but gave up on throwing the ball, even while trailing by multiple scores.

San Francisco’s bad luck at quarterback was finally too much to overcome as its 12-game win streak ended. The Niners lost both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo to season-ending injuries, and Purdy — the final pick in April’s draft — lost as a starter for the first time.

Philadelphia police greased traffic and light poles in what has often proved a futile attempt to slow the revelry ahead. But a city that has been starved for a championship now has its beloved Birds in the Super Bowl just three months after the Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series.

Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs heading to Super Bowl

(NEXSTAR) – After ousting the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs are set to go head-to-head in Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona next month.

It was the Eagles that punched their ticket first on Sunday, beating “Mr. Irrelevant” Brock Purdy and the 49ers, 31-7, to win the NFC Championship.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts scored one of the team’s four rushing touchdowns. He finished 15 of 25 for 121 yards, with Miles Sanders running for two touchdowns. Linebacker Haason Reddick made the hit that forced Purdy out of the game with an elbow injury. Reddick also recovered a fumble by Purdy’s replacement, Josh Johnson, who later suffered a concussion.

Philadelphia police greased traffic and light poles in what has often proved a futile attempt to slow the revelry ahead. But a city that has been starved for a championship now has its beloved Birds in the Super Bowl just three months after the Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series.

It’s been five years since the Eagles were in the Super Bowl – they defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII.

Following a tight game Sunday evening, the Chiefs will be heading to their fifth Super Bowl after beating the Bengals 23-20 in the AFC Championship game in Kansas City. It was a rematch of last season when the Bengals kept the Chiefs out of what would have been Kansas City’s third-consecutive Super Bowl, beating them 27-24 in overtime in the AFC Championship game.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambled for a first down on his badly sprained right ankle, then was shoved late out of bounds by Joseph Ossai, giving Harrison Butker a chance to kick a 45-yard field goal with 3 seconds left that gave Kansas City the victory. The Chiefs had lost their last three games against the Bengals until Sunday.

The Eagles have gone 1-4, and 0-1 in the playoff, at State Farm Stadium. In addition to winning the Super Bowl in the 2017 season, the Eagles have appeared in two others: XXXIX, where they lost 24-21 to the Patriots, and XV, where they lost to the Oakland Raiders 27-10.

The Chiefs, heading to their third Super Bowl in four years, have gone 1-1 at State Farm Stadium. They’ve appeared in four Super Bowls: LV, a 31-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; LIV, a 31-20 win over the 49ers; IV, where they won against the Minnesota Vikings 23-7; and the first-ever Super Bowl, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-10.

The Super Bowl is set for Sunday, February 12.

A small detail on Sunday’s ‘The Last of Us’ reveals that Joel likely avoided becoming infected on episode 1 because of his food choices

The Last of Us, season 1, episode 3; TLOU 103 Ellie and JoelEllie and Joel in season one, episode three of “The Last of Us.”

  • Warning: There are spoilers ahead for season one, episode three of “The Last of Us.”
  • Joel says the cordyceps outbreak likely started by mutating and tainting foods with flour or sugar.
  • Joel, Sarah, and Tommy likely weren’t infected on episode one because they avoided eating pancakes, biscuits, and cake.

Sunday’s episode of “The Last of Us” revealed how the cordyceps fungal infection likely spread so rapidly around the world. It turns out Joel may have narrowly avoided being infected simply because of his food choices on the series’ pilot.

Early on season one, episode three, Ellie asks Joel how the infection began.

“If you have to get bit to be infected than who bit the first person?” Ellie asks.

Joel tells her that while “no one knows for sure,” people have a solid theory of what happened.

“Best guess… cordyceps mutated and some of it got into the food supply — probably a basic ingredient like flour or sugar,” Joel says. “There were certain brands of food that were sold everywhere. All across the country, across the world. Bread, cereal, pancake mix. You eat enough of it, it’ll get you infected.”

The words pancake mix should’ve stood out.

On the series’ pilot, Joel’s daughter, Sarah, planned to make her dad pancakes for his birthday. When Sarah discovered they were out of pancake mix, she opted to cook them eggs instead.

TLOU 101 pancakesPancakes probably wouldn’t have been a good idea to eat on Joel’s birthday.

If they had eaten pancakes, they may have wound up infected by the episode’s end.

If you revisit episode one, it turns out Joel and Sarah may have dodged getting infected with the cordyceps fungus a few times.

When they left the house for the day, their neighbor offered them some biscuits. Later in the episode, the older woman who was fed a biscuit became infected. After school, Sarah was less enthused about baking cookies with her neighbor after learning they were making raisin cookies instead of chocolate chip.

When Joel returned home from work, Sarah was disappointed to learn that her father forgot to pick up a cake for them to celebrate his birthday.

However, he probably saved both of their lives if any of the ingredients for the cake were tainted.

If you’re listen closely to the news report as Sarah’s waiting up for her dad, a TV report says the Austin police don’t have any comment on a “rash of violent incidents across the city,” but a “new street drug” is cited as the possible blame. At this point, people are already becoming infected.

TLOU 101 violent incidents“Violent incidents” were already occurring earlier in the day in Austin, Texas on the premiere.

In Naughty Dog’s hit video game of the same name, we never directly learn how the cordyceps infection spread so quickly across the planet.

However, a newspaper you can find at Joel’s house at the game’s start mentions contaminated crops across the country, hinting there may have been a connection.

The top story is about a “mysterious infection.” The story underneath, which, at the time seemed irrelevant, reports the Food and Drug Administration was investigating crops “potentially tainted with mold.”

The story goes on to mention a warning against imported crops from South America, Central America, and Mexico.

It appears the show expanded upon and linked the two together, but changed the location of contamination to Indonesia, as we saw in last week’s episode.

‘The Last of Us’ made a major change to a game character. The showrunners explain why it was important to expand on Bill and his love story.

Nick Offerman as Bill on TLOU 103, The Last of Us“The Last of Us” game merely implies Bill’s sexuality, but isn’t directly forthcoming about it. The show fully fleshes out the character with an endearing love story.

Liane Hentscher/HBO

  • Warning: There are spoilers ahead for season one, episode three of “The Last of Us.”
  • Sunday’s episode expands greatly on a minor survivor from the video game, Bill (Nick Offerman).
  • The showrunners told Insider why it was important to show Bill’s love story with Frank.

Sunday’s “The Last of Us” made a major change from the video game in the series’ best episode yet, which is sure to be an early contender for one of the year’s finest hours of television.

In a largely standalone episode, viewers were introduced to Bill (Nick Offerman), a doomsday planner who took over and safe-guarded himself in an abandoned Massachusetts town once the cordyceps infection took hold.

Over the course of 20 years, we watched his life in a series of intimate time jumps as he booby-trapped the town, fell in love with an outsider, Frank (Murray Bartlett), and lived out the rest of his days, growing old together while exploring his sexuality for the first time with his partner.

"The Last of Us" 103 TLOU Nick Offerman and Murray BartlettNick Offerman and Murray Bartlett on “The Last of Us.”

Liane Hentscher/HBO

The pair’s tender love story is a much richer and more respectful adaptation of Bill than the version that’s glossed over in the game where his sexuality is merely implied, but never directly stated, and the relationship is depicted in a negative light.

In the game, Joel and Ellie seek out Bill, shown as a paranoid loner who speaks to himself, to help them fix up a vehicle and carry on across the country. Frank, also his partner in the game, is only seen dead, hanging after committing suicide some time ago after the infected bit him.

In the game, we learn the two had a nasty falling out, resulting in Frank’s eventual death. In HBO’s adaptation, the pair live out an idyllic existence, dying in each other’s arms while never coming in contact with Ellie. Bill is still believed alive in the game.

During a Zoom conversation with showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Insider asked why the show made these changes and expanded upon Bill’s story in a significant way, giving him a happily ever after.

Mazin thought after two episodes filled with action and danger, there was an opportunity to take a breath in the story and change things up to show survival from a different vantage point.

“There’s this lovely thread that indicated this hint of a relationship between Bill and Frank in the game,” Mazin said, “I just suggested to Neil that maybe we pull that thread and we take it in a different direction in terms of the way it was depicted in the game, and use it to show the passage of time and use it to explore some of these themes that are so important to the length of the show, themes about what it means to love somebody, the different kinds of love, including a love that can be very protective and violent and dangerous, and how we could give these two men a win.”

Mazin added: “They made it through. They had a long love and an ending that was actually quite peaceful and happy.”

Druckmann added that Sunday’s deviation from the source material allowed the series to do something the hit game couldn’t.

Not only did it give us Bill’s backstory, but it also gave us a slightly different, more optimistic version of Bill who we gradually see grow from a skeptical survivalist to a protective partner who has found something worth fighting for even at the world’s end.

“In the game… mostly because we never leave Joel and Ellie’s perspective, we can’t see how Bill kind of lived his life,” Druckmann said, adding that led to a conversation and exploration about what you “survive for” in an apocalypse. “When you do have a safe space, what is there left to live for?”

TLOU 103 Nick Offerman as BillBill finds a partner worth fighting for in the apocalypse.

Liane Hentscher/HBO

Druckman continued: “I love that Craig pitched this story of, ‘Let’s lean into that and just show it’s a different Bill in that he’s still — first is all about survival and nothing else. And here comes this other person that is still looking for the beauty in life, even in these horrific circumstances.”

“This Bill, in this world — in the show’s world — eventually changes and leans into that love and leans into, “Oh, this is what’s important in this life,” he added.

By the episode’s end, Joel and Ellie arrive at Bill and Frank’s house after they died. Bill has left behind a letter for Joel in which he passes on some advice.

The letter, in part, reads:

“…I respect you so I’m gonna tell you something because you’re probably the only person who will understand. I used to hate the world and I was happy when everyone died. But I was wrong because there was one person worth saving. That’s what I did. I saved him. Then, I protected him. That’s why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do and God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way. I leave you all of my weapons and equipment. Use them to keep Tess safe.”

Bill tells Joel to keep his partner, Tess, safe in the same way he protected Frank for years. Of course, Frank doesn’t know that Tess recently died.

Druckmann told us the lesson Bill learned about “what’s important in this life” on Sunday’s episode reflects back to Joel and his current mission, given to him by Tess, to press on and believe in hope for the future by getting this girl, who could potentially be a cure to the cordyceps infection, out west.

Ellie’s what matters. Ellie is who Joel must keep safe.

Of Bill’s letter to Joel, Druckmann said, “He gives him this warning that’s too late. Here’s what you gotta do for Tess. And then Joel realizes, ‘Well, it’s too late for Tess. Maybe it’s not too late for this kid.'”

The Biden administration could exclude North Africans and Middle Easterners as ‘white’ in the 2030 Census. New categories will prevent undercounting of MENA people, advocates say.

  • Recommendations from the Office of Management and Budget include new categories for the US Census.
  • It includes categories for Middle Eastern and North African people previously considered white.
  • Advocates have been fighting for these changes for years over the issue of undercounting.

The Biden administration is pushing for changes to the way Census data on race and ethnicity is collected, including for Middle Eastern and North African people.

The proposed changes come after years of reviews on the way the US Census Bureau collects its data. Last year, President Joe Biden continued the review effort after former President Donald Trump’s administration stalled on decisions regarding the implementation of proposed changes for the 2020 census, NPR reported.

Proposals released Thursday by the Office of Management and Budget on its race and ethnicity statistical standards show, among other changes, a “new and distinct minimum reporting category” for MENA people, who are classified as white under current data collection standards, which were set in 1997.

The proposal would also alter the definition of white to only include people of European ancestry.

The document notes that civil servants advocated for this new category because “many in the MENA community do not share the same lived experience as White people with European ancestry, do not identify as White, and are not perceived as White by others.”

The new MENA category would also help with allocating resources to these groups, the document notes.

A MENA category was supposed to be added to the 2020 census, but the bureau announced in 2018 that would no longer be the case until further research on the categories was done.

Groups have long advocated for a distinct MENA category in the Census to combat underreporting by Middle Eastern and North African groups, whose numbers are obscured in the broader “white” definition and who may be wary of checking off the “white” category based on personal identification.

Another major change in the proposal would be the addition of “Hispanic or Latino” in the race category, and adding more specific ethnicity categories, such as Colombian, that people can fill out on the form. Some presenters in the OMB working group, however, disagreed with this proposal, saying that it would result in the undercounting of Latinos who identified with other races, such as Afro-Latinos.

Other proposed changes to race and ethnicity data collection include the removal of “Negro” from the definition of Black or African American people, replacing “Far East” with “East Asian,” and the addition of Indigenous North, South, and Central Americans to the definition of American Indian or Alaska Native.

The group also proposed getting rid of the terms majority and minority to refer to white people and people of color, respectively.

The OMB will not make a final decision on the proposals until the summer of 2024 but is currently seeking public feedback on the proposal.

The White House did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
