This comes as some of his allies, including Republicans in Congress, would like to see a special counsel appointed to look into what they allege is political bias by federal investigators. If you listen to nearly anyone in the media this week, on the left or right, youāll get the impression that Donald Trump is about to magically fire Robert Mueller (even though he canāt do that), and as a result Trump will magically be off the hook for his criminal antics (even though it doesnāt work that way). But here in the real world, itās never been more clear that Trump is going down. In fact itās Trump himself whoās showing us why heāll go down. Just today, Trump tepidly floated the idea that maybe heāll consider pardoning Michael Flynn at some point. This might have been a smart move on his part, six months ago. By now Flynn has already legally committed himself to a plea deal, and heās turned over incriminating evidence against Trump and other big fish. Because Trump is hesitant and indecisive by nature, he blew the opportunity to save himself with a Flynn pardon a long time ago. This is part of a larger pattern. This fall, Trump had the opportunity to try to get Robert Mueller fired back before any arrests got underway. It would have been a convoluted process, and thereās a strong chance it would have backfired on him, but he did have a window of opportunity. However now that four of his own people have been arrested and two of them have cut a deal, he doesnāt have a fraction of the political muscle required to get away with it. As weāveĀ previously explained, the Republican Party is only making noise about Mueller so it can make the case to Trumpās base that itĀ triedĀ to stop Mueller. Once the public figures out that Donald Trump isnāt about to fire Robert Mueller, the media will move on to claiming that Trump is about to start a war as a distraction from his scandal. But again, itās far too late for Trump to get away with starting a needless war; that window closed months ago. Trump is hesitant and tepid by nature, and heās not a man of action until itās far too late to matter. Itās how we know heās going down. There are the stories that make their way to the forefront of media coverage because they sound important in the moment or they make for good ratings. Then there are the stories that should have gotten more coverage than they did, because theyāll end up being crucial. This past week, full of noise and bombast and misdirection, was a potent reminder of that disparity. Here are the three crucial Trump-Russia stories you may have missed, and why they matter. As per usual, the biggest news in the Trump-Russia scandal continues to arrive on Friday. This time around we received the revealing news from the Washington Post that Jared Kushner is hiring a crisis management company (link). This means he knows heās about to be arrested, or heās about to cut a deal, or heās otherwise about to face a reputational crisis. In other words, even as all the noise about Mueller supposedly being fired plays out on cable television, Mueller is actually about to take down Trumpās son-in-law. In another major development, Mueller has seized Michael Flynnās banking records from Deutsche Bank, according to the Wall Street Journal (link). Why does this matter? Mueller already has a plea deal with Flynn. There is no need for him to continue chasing down Flynnās every last possible transgressionunlessĀ those transgressions are going to help expose crimes committed by someone like Donald Trump or Jared Kushner. Deutsche Bank has floated questionable loans to both of those men, and it has a history of facilitating Russian money laundering. Mueller seems to think Flynnās banking records will give him the evidence he needs against a bigger fish. The third crucial underreported Trump-Russia story this week is that Marco Rubio and Bob Corker both basically announced their campaigns for president in 2020 on Friday (link). This means they donāt think Donald Trump will still be in office by 2020, and even if Mike Pence inherits the presidency, they donāt think heāll survive to run as the incumbent in 2020 either.
