Pueblo teen returns from FBI leadership camp

mikenova shared this story from www.chieftain.com – RSS Results in news/pueblo of type article.

An incoming East High School sophomore recently returned from the FBI Youth Leadership Program at the world renowned FBI Academy in Quantico, Va.
Layne Martinez was one of only 60 teenagers selected to participate in the weeklong program, modeled on the National Academy and run by counselors to develop leaders and future criminal justice professionals.
The young men and women who earned spots in the program — the 20th offered by the FBI — did so based on academic achievements, leadership abilities and involvement in school and community.

As part of the application process, Layne was required to submit an essay on the subject of leadership.
“Being a leader isn’t about being correct about anything and everything,” she wrote. “It isn’t being the first or fastest one to complete a mission, nor is it feeling like you have the authority to control other people’s beliefs and shame on them because they may be different than yours.
“Displaying leadership is staying committed to your beliefs, strengths and ideas — making challenging decisions that will not only benefit you, but the people and cause you are fighting for.”
Layne said she applied for the program to strengthen her already prominent leadership skills and to get an inside track at a career in criminal justice.
“I have always wanted to pursue a career in the FBI or law enforcement and I knew I could learn a lot from the counselors and fellow students who had similar aspirations,” she said.
Over the course of the program, Layne and her colleagues learned about the qualities that define a strong leader “and how to apply them in our daily lives, such as always having a positive mindset, doing the right thing when nobody is looking, and standing up for what you believe in even if you may be ridiculed for it.
“We also learned to live by this quote: ‘If not me, then who?’ ”
Before a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., participants were presented with an overview of World War II and the principals involved on both sides.
“Leaders have two options when distributing their strength: They can use it to bring benefit to the people or they can use it for destruction, such as Adolf Hitler,” Layne explained.
There also was a primer on internet and social media safety and etiquette — “we learned that having inappropriate content linked to your name through the internet can come with consequences” — and the 5P Rule of Time Management, which is “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.”
While the instruction and lessons were vitally important, for Layne, the most exciting part of the program was the opportunity to form bonds with like-minded students from across the country.
“When everyone stepped on their planes on the way to this camp, we had no idea what to expect or who we were going to meet,” Layne said.
“But we formed friendships within hours of meeting one another. When faced with challenges throughout the camp, we faced them together.

“We cheered each other on, accepted everyone for who they are, and we learned from one another.”
As part of the program, participants visited the Hostage Rescue Team facility in Yorktown, a stop that was of special interest to Layne.
“I am currently interested in becoming a special agent, working with the hostage rescue team, or dealing with human trafficking cases,” she said.
“Attending the camp helped me make that decision because we got to personally meet students who are learning at the academy in Quantico.”
As a final mental and physical challenge, the students were tasked with completing a modified version of the grueling “Yellow Brick Road” obstacle course all FBI recruits must navigate.
Fittingly, Layne received a symbolic yellow brick for being a finisher.

(8) Schröder criticizes Heiko Maas in the case Özil – policy

mikenova shared this story from Politik – SZ.de.

  • Former Chancellor Schroeder calls statements by Foreign Minister Maas in the case of Ozil “simply unbearable”.
  • Among other things, Maas had said that “the case of a multi-millionaire living and working in England provides information about the ability to integrate in Germany”.
  • Mesut Özil has declared his resignation from the national team on Sunday and just this, among other things with racism against him.

Former Federal Chancellor and SPD leader Gerhard Schröder has sharply criticized Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) for commenting on the case of Mesut Özil. Speaking to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Schröder said that a foreign minister, as part of the debate on a German soccer player with Turkish roots, admitted that Maas had done so was “simply unbearable”.
Maas’s “dull comments” on Özil also have “nothing at all to do with social democratic ideas of integration”. The Foreign Minister makes the football player not only indirectly to the charge that he earns a lot of money and his food point currently not in Germany. In a way, he also doubts that “Özil really belongs here”. With his statements he plays into the hands of those who rejected Mesut Özilbecause of the Turkish origin of his family.

Why is Mueller handing off key cases?
Thu, 26 Jul 2018 06:30:51 -0400

mikenova shared this story from DailyHerald.com > Top News.

Something has been going on with Robert Mueller’s investigation of people thought to have played significant roles in the Trump-Russia affair. The special counsel, assigned to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” has been farming out seemingly important parts of the investigation to offices outside his own.
In April, Mueller referred an investigation of close Trump associate Michael Cohen to federal prosecutors in New York. This month, the U.S. attorney in Washington — not Mueller — indicted Maria Butina on charges of being an unregistered Russian agent. And also this month, when Mueller charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton campaign offices, he immediately turned the case over to the Justice Department’s National Security Division for prosecution.

Cohen is a key figure in theories of Trump-Russia collusion. In former British spy Christopher Steele’s notorious dossier, Cohen was accused of holding secret talks with Russian officials in August 2016 to discuss “how deniable cash payments were to be made to hackers who had worked in Europe under Kremlin direction against the CLINTON campaign and various contingencies for covering up these operations and Moscow’s secret liaison with the TRUMP team more generally.”
If that’s not collusion, nothing is. Such activities, if they occurred, would be at the center of Mueller’s jurisdiction. And yet Mueller handed Cohen off to the Southern District of New York.
Butina figures in theories that a wealthy Russian banker “illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency,” in the words of a McClatchy report from January.
Again, such activities, if they actually took place, would clearly be in Mueller’s bailiwick.
Finally, the indictment of the 12 Russian intelligence agents goes to the very heart of Russian attempts to interfere with the U.S. presidential campaign, the investigation of which is Mueller’s responsibility. Yet once Mueller indicted them, he handed the case over to the Justice Department.
What is going on? I asked a few former federal prosecutors if they saw any messages in Mueller’s moves. The take-away: These aren’t encouraging developments for those longing for a big collusion/conspiracy/coordination indictment from Mueller.
“I think it proves that little, if any, of what Mueller’s team has generated so far is linked to the special counsel’s mandate,” said Former Prosecutor 1. “Everything that is public so far could, should and typically is handled by either United States Attorney offices of jurisdiction, National Security Division attorneys or even Criminal Division attorneys at main Justice.”
“I think Mueller doesn’t have anything on collusion,” said Former Prosecutor 2. “I think we would have seen it. I don’t see anything that looks like there’s a crime lurking — maybe he’s got eight indictments under seal, but to me, it makes no sense. All of this says to me there is no there.”
Former Prosecutor 3 said the investigations passed off indicate the subject matter is “outside (Mueller’s) jurisdiction.”
Some former prosecutors drew a distinction between the Cohen and Butina cases, in which Mueller handed off the investigation to others, and the 12 Russians case, in which Mueller made the indictment himself and then handed off the prosecution. That could be because Mueller realized that his team, staffed with investigators, could not manage a complex prosecution in the courtroom.
“They don’t have the bandwidth to handle a highly technical case like that,” said Former Prosecutor 2. From Former Prosecutor 3: “Good investigators aren’t good litigators, and very often the best courtroom lawyers aren’t the best subject matter experts.”
It has been widely observed that there is no way the 12 Russians — government intelligence officers located in Russia — will ever come to the United States for trial. “There is absolutely no chance any of the Russian officials charged will ever see the inside of an American courtroom,” Andrew McCarthy, another former federal prosecutor, wrote in National Review. “The indictment is a strictly political document by which the special counsel seeks to justify the existence of his superfluous investigation.”
Other legal types, including yet another Justice Department veteran, said moving the 12 Russians’ case to a highly secretive part of the department is a good way to make the case disappear. “If Mueller kept it in his office, people would ask what’s going on with the case,” said the veteran. “But when he gives it to the National Security Division, it falls off the face of the earth. It’s a way of burying it.”
Taken together, none of that points to the big collusion/conspiracy/coordination indictment of Resistance dreams. Such an indictment might still be on the way, of course — no one on the outside has a full picture of what is going on inside Mueller’s office — but the signs don’t seem to be pointing toward it.
Finally, all the handed-off cases raise questions about whether a special prosecutor was needed at all. Mueller clearly felt there was no need for a special prosecutor to pursue Cohen or Butina — and one could argue that the Butina case, at least, was closer to Mueller’s core mission than the Paul Manafort prosecution. And if the 12 Russians matter, a case that goes to the heart of the Trump-Russia affair, can be fairly tried by DOJ prosecutors, it’s reasonable to ask: Why was a special counsel appointed in the first place?

Fritz Schroeder's graveFritz Schroeder was buried with eight other German soldiers

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has started a two-day visit to Romania and Bulgaria with a visit to the grave of his father.Mr Schroeder never knew his father, Fritz Schroeder, a soldier who died fighting in Romania in 1944.
The location of the grave was first discovered three years ago, but previous planned visits were cancelled.
This is a deeply emotional event for Mr Schroeder, who grew up without even knowing where his father had died.
The chancellor’s sister tracked down the grave in the remote Romanian village of Ceanu Mare, 375 km (235 miles) north-west of Bucharest.
The area was cordoned off to the public on Thursday as Mr Schroeder’s entourage arrived.
The chancellor was greeted by an Orthodox priest and an Eastern Rite Catholic priest at the church.
He was given a round loaf of bread and a wreath of mauve flowers as a symbol of grief, before walking inside the church grounds with Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.
Pride
Mr Schroeder’s father, an unskilled labourer, is buried in a collective grave with eight other soldiers in the Orthodox cemetery.

Gerhard SchroederSchroeder has said he felt no ill effects from being fatherless

The grave is marked with a carved wooden cross and a black marble plaque listing the names of the nine soldiers.Drafted into the German army in 1940, he was killed on 4 October, 1944 aged 32, along with his comrades as they were retreating.
Many local people gathered in the village to discuss the visit. Some raised concerns that the chancellor may want his father’s body dug up and repatriated.
Local farmer Ion Valean, 73, told the Associated Press news agency: “We are proud that the father of a head of state is buried here. We are also happy that they paved the roads.”
A stretch of about 18km (11 miles) were asphalted in 2001 when Mr Schroeder had first planned to visit his father’s grave.
That trip was cancelled following the 11 September attacks in the US, but Mr Nastase extended the invitation on a visit to Berlin last year.
The BBC’s Ray Furlong says that since the discovery of the grave, the chancellor has been asked whether growing up without a father affected him psychologically.
He responded that he did not know, but that he had not felt any ill effects.
Mr Schroeder’s visit to the region will resume official duties with political talks in Bucharest, followed by a working visit to Bulgaria on the second day of his trip.

Rev. George C. Papademetriou, Ph.D.

The Doctrine of Evil

To understand the Orthodox view and practice of exorcism, one must know the Orthodox presuppositions of evil and its doctrine of Satan. The patristic evidence points to the fact that the cause of evil in the world is the devil. The devil was created by God as an angel, who was free, and as a free agent chose to oppose the plan of God. That is, the devil is a fallen angel. Satan is not evil by nature, but by will and action. In Satan there is no truth whatsoever; he is absolute falsehood and deception. Satan is not just a negation or deprivation of good, but a positive force with free will that always chooses evil. The devil has the ability to recognize divine power, as in the incident of recognizing Christ as the Son of God (Matt. 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-3). Satan has under his leadership legions and invisible powers, with their own “satanic teachings.” The devil and evil spirits know that God exists and recognize true and devoted Christians, but pious Christians discern the plans of the devil. The devil, however, constantly employs every method of deception to enslave man to satanic forces and causes rebellion against God. He is the cause of corruption and disorder, a parasitic power in the world that will ultimately be destroyed by the power of God in the “last days.” Because there is no compromise between God and the devil, the struggle will continue until the end.
The Orthodox doctrine of God is that He is eternal, uncreated and incorporeal. All other creatures, both visible and invisible, were created by God as free. The power of the devil will ultimately be destroyed by the resurrection of the dead and the renewal of creation. Salvation from all evil will be attained by obedience to God and His plan. This world is a battleground between the acceptance of good and evil. It must be pointed out that the world as the creation of God is not evil. What is evil is the satanic power, destroyed by the power of the cross and the resurrection of Christ.

The Orthodox Tradition of Exorcising

After examining the doctrine of Satan in the Orthodox Church, it is imperative to proceed to the method of repelling and exorcising the evil powers. In the New Testament, Christ sent out His apostles to heal and to “cast out devils” (Matt. 10:8, Luke 10:17-20). Christ Himself often expels demons from the possessed (Mark 1:23-27; Luke 4:33-35, 9:43; Matt. 10:1; Mark 16:17; Matt. 7:22). The New Testament, however, rejected popular uses of magic incantations and rites to expel the satanic powers from people, because they took advantage of superstitious religiosity (Acts 19:13).
In the name of Christ, one is able to cast out demons and to destroy the evil powers (Matt. 10:8). The Fathers of the Church accepted this doctrine and expanded on it. Justin Martyr (Apology 85, 2) says that in the name of Christ, the Son of God who was crucified and rose again, every demon that is exorcised is defeated and submits (Library of the Greek Fathers and Church Writers, Athens: Apostolike Diakonia 1955, Vol. 3, pp. 288-89). The satanic powers are destroyed through the power of the cross and the name of Christ. Objects possessed by demons, when exorcised in the name of the living God, are freed from the possession of evil. The patristic evidence is abundant in the belief in possession and expulsion of the devil by the power of the word of God (Ignatios, Epistles to Philippians 3 and 12; Library of the Greek Fathers and Church Writers, Vol. 2, pp. 333 and 336; Clement of Alexandria, Stromata 4:14; Library, Vol 8, p. 82; Origen, Against Celsus, 6:44; Library, Vol. 10, p. 93).
The demonic possession of individuals and even of objects, has been accepted by the Orthodox Church today in the Sacrament of Baptism, in exorcising satanic powers in the case of the evil eye (vaskania), and in exorcising the devil in the case of a possessed person. In the early Church exorcisms were performed by a person especially trained and appointed to pray to drive out evil from those about to be baptized. Since the fourth century the place of the exorcist, as well as other functions and ministries, have been taken over by the priest. The exorcisms are prayers that invoke God to expel evil spirits. The priest prays to expel all evil, the spirit of error, of idolatry, of covetousness, of Iying and every impure act that arises from the teachings of the devil. The renunciation of the devil in baptism is used in every baptism that is performed in the Orthodox Church.

Vaskania

The exorcism of satanic powers is also performed by the Orthodox Church in other rites, such as that of the evil eye (vaskania).
Vaskania is simply a phenomenon that was accepted by primitive people as fact. They believed that certain people have such powerful feelings of jealousy and envy, that when they looked on some beautiful object or individual it brought destruction. Vaskania is recognized by the Church as the jealousy and envy of some people for things they do not possess, such as beauty, youth, courage or any other blessing. The Church essentially rejected Vaskania as contradicting the concept of divine providence. The prayers of the Church to avert the evil eye are, however, a silent recognition of this phenomenon as a morbid feeling of envy. The Church forbids people to go to “readers” or other individuals for use of magical rituals to overcome the evil eye. These readers take advantage of the weakness of superstitious people and destroy them spiritually and financially by playing upon their imagination.
There is also a secret rite performed by superstitious people to avert the evil eye, which verges on magic. Though the Church encourages even the laity to pray and exorcise evil, it rejects magical practices and rites. This secret rite is described as follows: “The exorcist (not a priest but an old woman) prepares a vial of olive oil and a small glass of water. She dips a finger in the oil, rubs it in a sign of the Cross on the victim’s forehead and lets one drop fall onto the water; she repeats the process, making a cross on the forehead, on the chin and both cheeks. If the devil is indeed present, the four drops of oil in the water join to form the ellipsoid shape of an eye. The ritual then calls for the reading of prayers and repeating the four signs of the Cross; the drops of oil will not join in the water, but will disperse.”
The possession of individuals by the devil and demonic powers and the cure in the name of Christ is evidenced in the New Testament (Acts 3:2-8, 9:32-42; 20:7-12; Matt. 10:8; Mark 16:17-18). The Church continues in its liturgical rites what Christ enacted in His ministry. The Church recognizes the influence of evil and renounces it in the name of Christ in prayers and fasting. The prayers of exorcism in the early Church were offered by special ministry through the exorcist. This is evidenced from the early prayers that have survived. From the fourth century onwards, the ministry of the exorcist has been fulfilled by the priest.

Orthodox Prayers of Exorcism

All the Orthodox prayer books include prayers of exorcism used by priests to fight the power of evil. The Orthodox Book of Prayers (Euchologion To Mega) includes three prayers of exorcism by Saint Basil and four by Saint John Chrysostom. They are read “for those who suffer from demonic possessions and every other malady.” Through these prayers, the devil is exorcised (renounced) “in the name of God Almighty and the Lord Jesus Christ, and commanded to come out of the victim, who is liberated and redeemed by the eternal God from the energies (powers) of the impure spirits. The great ills that humanity suffers are attributed to the devil and demonic power.”
From the Orthodox theological point of view, the following can be considered exorcists:

  1. Christ is the exorcist par excellence for it is He who won the victory over the power of the devil.
  2. Priests in the performance of the holy sacraments and in preaching the word of God follow Christ’s example.
  3. All Orthodox Christians are exorcists as they struggle against personal sin and social evil. In fact, “the whole Church, past, present and future, has the task of an exorcist to banish sin, evil, injustice, spiritual death, the devil from the life of humanity.” Archbishop Iakovos, in a sermon at the Sage Chapel, Cornell University, spoke on exorcism in the following manner: “Both healing and exorcising are ministered through prayers, which spring from faith in God and from love for man…. All the prayers of healing and exorcism, composed by the Fathers of the Church and in use since the third century, begin with the solemn declaration: In Thy Name, O Lord.’ ” (Exorcism and Exorcists in the Greek Orthodox Tradition, March 10, 1974.)

In summary, the four prayers of exorcism by Saint John Chrysostom and the three of Saint Basil ask in the name of God to deliver the possessed from the captivity of the devil. Some can be healed by faith accompanied by fasting and purification. The use of exorcism must be made with discretion and great care. (For details, see G. Papademetriou, “Exorcism and the Greek Orthodox Church,” in Exorcism Through the Ages, New York: Philosophical Library, 1974.)

Wed, 25 Jul 2018 14:26:07 -0400

mikenova shared this story .

The press conference Comey could have given after Trump’s ‘wiretap’ tweets

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
When President Trump first tweeted about Trump Tower wiretaps, imagine if James Comey had told us the full truth at that time. If we knew then everything we have learned in the past several months, things might have been very, very different.
The day is Monday, March 6, 2017. Donald J.Trump, less than two months into his presidency, has just turned the mainstream media into a whirling dervish of frenzied maniacs due to a series of tweets accusing President Barack Obama of “wiretapping” Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential election.
FBI Director James Comey (who was also FBI Director under Obama) has called an impromptu press briefing at the Justice Department to address these accusations.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I appreciate you all assembling here for an impromptu press conference. I must admit, that although I am merely a humble law enforcement officer interested only in truth, justice, and the American way, I’ve begun to enjoy the attention and hubbub surrounding these chaotic media events.
“As you know, this weekend President Trump released a series of statements via the social media platform known as Twitter. (On a side note, I have a Twitter account but I have kept it secret for quite some time. I won’t reveal it until later this month but check it out. My secret handle is Reinhold Niebuhr – a theologian I wrote a senior thesis on in college – and I follow CNN, David Ignatius, and the Onion!) But, enough about me (for now) let’s get back to Trump’s tweets.
“The president tweeted the following:
“Now, let me be clear: President Obama did not order Donald Trump’s wires to be tapped in Trump Tower. The FBI did not tap the wires at Trump Tower. Period. We did not do that.
“Here’s what we did do.
“We had several FISA warrants on people associated with the Trump campaign. The first was onTrump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort surrounding an investigation dating back to 2014.
“The second was against Carter Page. Now this one is really interesting. That ‘Russian Dossier’ you were all going crazy about in January, right after I secretly briefed President-elect Trump about one of the salacious and unverified stories it contained? (If I recall, you learned about that secret briefing from former DNI James Clapper. He illegally leaked that to you guys at CNN, right? Hi Manu! I see you over there!) Well, that dossier, which was and still is unverified, it was the main evidence we presented to the secret FISA court for the Page surveillance.
“Here’s the really amazing thing about that dossier though. It turns out it was paid for by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign!  I know, can you believe it? We took a piece of campaign opposition research and we re-packaged it as ‘evidence’ to get a court to authorize surveillance of an American citizen connected to the Trump campaign! But, we did NOT ‘wiretap Trump Tower.’ We did not do that.
“Of course, there was other evidence in the FISA warrant. Well, kind of. We used an article in Yahoo News, (hey there, Michael Isikoff, let’s have coffee after this!) as well as a letter from former Minority Leader Harry Reid as evidence justifying the surveillance. Sounds pretty solid, right? But, here’s the thing… the Isikoff article and the Reid letter were all based on that same Clinton-financed, unverified dossier. So, really it was all the same piece of dubious evidence we used.
“Here’s another thing you need to know about that dossier (I think you should know everything we know considering it was so central to the surveillance and our investigation.) Even though the information in the dossier was compiled by Christopher Steele, a former MI-6 agent, the actual source information was a bunch of anonymous Russians connected to Vladimir Putin. We here at the FBI, we never interviewed any of them ourselves and we don’t even know who most of them are. But, we trust Steele. That should be enough for a warrant to spy on an American citizen though, right?
“Oh! Speaking of spying… well, to be totally accurate, speaking of ‘confidential human informants,’ we had one of those checking out people on the Trump campaign too! Yeah! We paid a bunch of money to a guy who flew George Papadopoulos to London under false pretenses. He pretended to want an article from Papadopoulos and paid him several thousand dollars. But, it was all a lie. He was really secretly trying to get information from him about the Trump campaign and any connections they might have to Russians. He then fed any information he got back to us at the FBI.
“Now, I know that sounds like spying, but I assure you it isn’t. It’s using a confidential human informant. Totally different thing, OK?
“I believe that completely addresses the allegation that ‘Obama wiretapped Trump Tower,’ right?
“But, you know what? Here’s the thing. Earlier today The Weekly Standard called for complete and total transparency from me and the Justice Department on this issue. They consider the president’s accusations to be a potential constitutional crisis. I love the Weekly Standard. Read it every week. Bill Kristol and I… we’re like two peas in a pod. In the spirit of total transparency, I have a few more things I want to tell you.
“So, stick around, grab a cup of coffee, and relax. Because there was a lot going on here at the FBI during the 2016 election that goes well beyond ‘wiretapping Trump Tower‘ (which we did not do.)  I have much more to tell you.”

If only James Comey had been fully truthful about the FBI’s handling of the Trump campaign, Part 2

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
When President Trump first tweeted about Trump Tower wiretaps, imagine if James Comey had told us the full truth at that time. If we knew then everything we have learned in the past several months, things might have been very, very different. Read part one, here.
It’s March 6, 2017, and FBI Director James Comey is giving a full briefing to the media about the actions of the FBI in relation to the 2016 presidential election.
“You all have your coffee? Great! Hey there, Laura Jarrett! Tell your mom, Valerie I said ‘Hi!’  Boy do we at the Justice Department miss her!
“OK. Let’s recap. I just finished addressing President Trump’s tweet regarding surveillance activity on people connected to his campaign in 2016.
“We had several FISA warrants on people from the Trump camp. One of them, against Carter Page, was justified by using the unverified, Clinton-financed opposition research known as the ‘Steele Dossier.’ We also had a confidential human source (you might call him a spy) secretly trying to get more Trumppeople to reveal things to us about their connections with Russia.
“So spying, electronic surveillance, use of Clinton-financed Russian campaign propaganda… everyone up to speed? OK. Now, in the spirit of full transparency, there’s more you need to know.
“One more thing you need to know about the investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia: The FISA surveillance and the confidential human source and all the investigating we were doing… well, we kept it all from Congress.
“Yeah, you see usually we would tell the ‘Gang of Eight’ (the Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate Majority and Minority Leaders plus the Chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees) every couple of months about these things. It’s called ‘constitutional oversight.’ We are supposed to tell these folks about activities like this so the FBI and DOJ don’t abuse the powers we have. You don’t want us to go off and spy on Americans for political purposes, do you?
“Well, the fact is we didn’t tell them anything about any of this for about nine months.
“Also, I’d like you to meet Peter Strzok. Don’t be shy Peter, step forward. Peter is a very important figure in our Counterintelligence Division. He was in charge of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of an unauthorized, unsecured email server (remember that?) and he also headed up the investigation into the Trump campaign’s connections to Russia.
“Now here’s something you need to know about Peter: He hates Donald Trump. I mean, he hates him. And he’s not shy about it. You should see the stuff he texts about him. And he is always texting. The guy is like one of my teenagers with the texting. Always on the phone texting. You’d think he had a girlfriend or something.
“Anyways, Peter hates Trump, loves Hillary and he was in charge of the Hillary email investigation. He even interviewed Hillary. Peter has been so helpful in this whole thing. He advised me early on to change my assessment of the use of this unsecured server from ‘gross negligence’ to ‘extremely careless.’ That may seem small, but it was huge. Kept me from recommending criminal charges against Hillary right in the middle of the campaign.  Huge.
“Peter then shifted from the email thing to setting up those FISA taps on Carter Page and setting up those folks to spy on the Trump people… er.. not a spy (sorry, easy mistake to make.) I mean, those confidential human sources.  You know… potato/poTAHto.
“Peter’s a super overachiever though. He also interviewed Michael Flynn in the first couple days of Trumps’ presidency. You know that interview that was instrumental in Flynn stepping down from the NSC? There may be more headlines coming out of that interview… don’t want to spoil it now. Stay tuned.
“Back in 2016 when Peter was overseeing all this important stuff (Hillary emails, Trump Russia, etc.) he was talking about ‘stopping’ Trump from being elected. He talked about having an ‘insurance policy’ in case he did get elected. He worried about being too tough on Hillary when he interviewed her because, after all, she was going to be the president.
“In retrospect, knowing all the anti-Trump, pro-Hillary stuff he was saying, maybe he shouldn’t have been in charge of these investigations, but come on, you reporters all hate Trump and that doesn’t affect how you do your job, right?
“Peter worked with my number two guy, Andrew McCabe. Say ‘Hi’ Andy. Andy’s wife ran for office last year and got about half a million bucks from Gov. Terry McAuliffe (an old friend of Hillary‘s) for her campaign. She got that money while Andy was overseeing the email investigation. You know all this already because Andy leaked it all to you, right? I think that may have been against the rules for him to leak that though. I hope if he’s ever asked about it, he tells the truth.
“So, where are we… Peter hates Trump, loves Hillary. Andy’s wife running on the Hillary party ticket in Virginia and getting tons of cash from Hillary World. What else? Well, let’s just say, most of us up here on the seventh floor hate Trump.
“Lisa Page, she works with Andy, she’s also a really, really, really, really, really close friend of Peter’s. She hates Trump. A bunch of others here hate him. Heck, I’ll admit it: I hate Trump too.
“In fact, check this out, from the first meeting I ever had with Trump, I’ve been writing memos about what happened in those encounters. Someday I might leak these memos (I mean if Andy can leak, why can’t I?) but only if Trump fires me. Hold that thought, ok?
“Now, I can tell by your faces that some of you are kind of shocked by all this. (To be honest, only those who we haven’t been talking too on background over the past year are shocked, still…)  But you really shouldn’t be shocked. This is just how business gets done in DC.
If you look at the big picture on this, it’s not that bad:

  • People in major decision-making power at the FBI and DOJ openly hate Trump and love Hillary
  • We worked together to soften our assessment of Hillary’s illegal use of an unsecured email server with confidential information on it
  • We used Clinton-financed, unverified opposition research from anonymous Russians to obtain a FISA warrant on an American citizen connected to the Trump campaign
  • Some of us texted each other thousands and thousands of times about our hate of Trump and about insurance policies and stopping Trump from winning the election, while all this was going on
  • We hired a guy to fly one of the Trump advisors to London and pay him thousands of dollars under false pretenses so we could secretly obtain information about the campaign’s dealings with Russians (you may call that spying but why quibble over words?)
  • My second in command leaked stuff to the media (he claims I approved it, I say I didn’t, someone is lying)
  • I kept notes on all my meetings with Trump so I could either trap him in a lie or inspire a special counsel investigation on him which could lead to impeachment (I never liked Trump, did I mention that?)

“All of that has been happening here at the FBI over the past year.
“But we did NOT ‘wiretap Trump Tower‘ as President Trump suggested in his tweet this weekend.
Now, are there any questions?”
Of course, James Comey never gave this press conference and never revealed all of the things that were going on at the FBI under his watch. Instead, he preened and played the victim and wrapped himself in the mantle of unassailable integrity.
In March 2017, Comey was called on to be fully transparent about any investigation into President Trump and his campaign and he refused to do so. If he had been, we would have learned all of these things.
Had he instead chosen to be transparent and reveal all of the things we have learned since then, do you think the media narrative in the early months of the Trump presidency might have been different? Do you think the Trump Administration and Congress would have acted differently? Do you think we ever would have had a special counsel named?

The Place de la Contrescarpe in Paris, where the assault took place

The Benalla affair (Frenchaffaire Benalla) is a political and judicial case involving Alexandre Benalla, who served as a security officer and deputy chief of staff to French President Emmanuel Macron. On 18 July 2018, the newspaper Le Monde identified him in footage as the person wearing a police helmet who beat up a young protester during the 2018 May Day demonstrations in Paris.
Following the publication of the report, the Paris public prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation on 19 July concerning “violence, usurpation of the functions of a police officer and using signs reserved for public authorities”. On 20 July, the Élysée announced that Benalla would be dismissed. On 22 July, Benalla was placed under formal investigation additionally for “concealment of a violation of professional secrecy” and “concealment of the misuse of images from a video surveillance system”. An accomplice, Vincent Crase, was also placed under formal investigation, as well as three police officers for illegally transmitting video surveillance to Benalla. Parts of the French political class media questioned the Élysée’s responsibility in the case for its apparent concealment of the case from the public prosecutor.

Lambert: FBI tries to defame Trump | Opinion
Wed, 25 Jul 2018 05:30:16 -0400

“Googling” Jean Seberg, I learned the actress died at 40, under suspicious circumstances, while being investigated by the FBI.
During the 1960s civil right’s movement, Seberg donated money to several groups being surveilled by the FBI, including the NAACP and Black Panthers. Documents acquired by Congress in the 1970s verified the FBI used their Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) to “harass, intimidate, defame, and discredit Seberg.” (Today, the FBI did the same to those helping elect President Trump.)
Documents verify President Nixon was kept informed of FBI activities related to Seberg’s case. (Emails verify President Obama was kept informed of activities related to Trump.)
One COINTELPRO memo proposed plans to smear Seberg, claiming the “child she was carrying was fathered by a Black Panther.” The blonde actress claimed this harassment caused her to go into premature labor, with the baby dying two days later. To disprove FBI rumors, Seberg “held a funeral with an open casket” to show the infant’s white skin.
Seberg moved to France, yet the FBI continued stalking and wire-tapping her. One night she disappeared. Nine days later, her “decomposing body was found wrapped in a blanket in the back seat of her Renault, parked close to her Paris apartment. Police found a bottle of barbiturates, an empty water bottle and a note reading, ‘Forgive me. I can no longer live with my nerves.’ Her death was ruled a probable suicide by police.”
A year later, police stated Seberg had so much alcohol in her system when she died, she would have been comatose and unable to get into her car without help. “Police noted there was no alcohol in the car and theorized that someone was present at the time of her death.”
COINTELPRO was a “series of covert, and at times illegal, projects aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic political organizations.” Their “stated motivation was protecting national security, preventing violence, and maintaining the existing social and political order.”
It looks to me like the FBI is using the same modus operandi today to defame Trump and his associates. Instead of “preventing violence,” they may be promoting it.

Inside The Mind of A Detective: What Skills Do You Need?
Tue, 24 Jul 2018 16:05:46 -0400

mikenova shared this story from Gizmodo Australia.

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a detective? Do stories about Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and maybe even Ice-T from Law & Order SVU make you wonder if you have what it takes?
We spoke to two former detectives to find out what skills a detective needs. Duncan McNab is a former detective and private investigator turned journalist and true crime author. His latest book Roger Rogerson was released in late 2016.
Belinda Neil is a former police detective, homicide investigator and hostage negotiator. She is also the author of the best-selling memoir, Under Siege and an inspirational speaker.

Presented by Sherlockonly on Stan. Watch every episode including the new season fast-tracked same day as the UK. Stan offers unlimited access to first-run exclusives, award-winning TV Shows and blockbuster movies for $10 per month.

Passion

‘Hard’ is an understatement when it comes to being a detective. You have to be dedicated and truly want to do the job.
“I’m appalling nosey and inquisitive,” laughs Duncan McNab. “I like to find out everything I can. I’m always intrigued by things I want to know. To be a detective, whether it’s in the police force or private practice, you really have to want to find things out. You get up in the morning and the first thing you think about is where the day’s adventure is going to take you.”
He continues, “Really good detectives are utterly passionate about it. They give a damn and don’t give up. They’ll fight.”
“You talk to coppers who retired 10 or 15 years ago and they still carry with them that passion to see justice on a case they have ever been able to fully resolve.”

Gut Instinct

Some call it gut instinct or a sixth sense. Others, simply the ability to read a scene. No matter what name you give it, it’s imperative to detective work.
McNab explains, “Good coppers who know their business and have the right skills and experience gain instinct. They can look at a crime and think [that] the likelihood of X being responsible is pretty good.
“What you don’t do is then try and build your evidence to support what you think. Let the evidence take you there.”
Neil agrees with this. “Gut instinct is very important but you can’t ever completely rely on it. It’s another [arrow] in our quiver, so to speak.”
“You might have a gut instinct about a particular person…but again it’s always imperative to review evidence and facts.”
McNab also details how even the most seasoned professionals can sometimes get it wrong. “Older, more experienced investigators can walk into a room and just smell if things are going to get interesting. You walk in and you know if there’s a problem.”
“On other occasions you might be meeting with someone you’re terribly apprehensive about, they might be a serious crim, and you walk out thinking, ‘That was quite pleasant actually. Nice fella! Sure he’s a terrible crook, but he’s not all that bad!'”
“I met a contract assassin once who was very pleasant, but at the same time you realise he would happily kill you if the money was right.”

Reading People

Similar to gut instincts, the ability to read a person’s body language is incredibly beneficial to investigators. It can help them identify suspects and draw conclusions about their cases.
But it isn’t reliable.
Someone acting suspiciously does’t necessarily mean they’re guilty.
“They may be stressed or uncomfortable , or even drug effected,” says Neil. “Sometimes a very good liar won’t give themselves away with these things.”
“That’s why it’s imperative to read the whole body language but also look at all the other evidence. These are indicators, not answers. You use them to build your suspicions and explore some more.”
McNab agrees. “Some people are remarkably fantastic liars. One thing you do learn after being around for awhile — it’s almost never that someone will tell you the whole detailed, absolutely factual truth. They always hold something back. Sometimes because they don’t think you need to know, sometimes they’re concerned about the impact on other people.”
“Take your impressions away from an interview, by all means, it’s what you have to do. But then go and do your own investigation and substantiate it.”
Neil also stresses how important self awareness is when it comes to reading a person, as it can effect how much they divulge.
“If I fold my arms, if I’m not looking at the person, or if I look at my watch the person isn’t going to think I’m interested in them. It’s not just about reading somebody else, it’s about being mindful of your own body language.”

Patience

Methodology is paramount to any investigation. You need to trawl through absolutely everything and not become impatient for answers — that’s when you might miss something important.
“Never ever forget to make sure your basics are absolutely rock solid, and then you build your investigation, says McNab.
“The chronology has to be right and the mechanics of what happened has to be substantiated…Be really cold about it and establish your facts.”
He continues, “It’s a hard methodical slog. You don’t dismiss things until you have a good reason to. It’s almost like accounting procedure sometimes. You have to be very precise, you don’t ignore things, you don’t assume things. Every incident needs to be investigated, wrapped up, dismissed or proceeded with.”

Objectivity

Being objective and analytical is equally important in an investigation. You can have to approach it with an open mind and avoid getting tunnel vision.
“Be open to other people’s ideas. Be suspicious,” says Neil
“The need to remain objective is paramount to any investigation. Facts get you the result in court. Things need to proved in evidence. That’s the bottom line.”
Duncan elaborates on this point, highlighting the need to be self critical. You don’t just investigate the crime. You investigate your own approach to it.
“You have to be brutally objective of yourself,” he surmises. “Once you’ve got everything wrapped up and think it’s good, take a step back and an objective look to make sure you haven’t made the mistakes that other people do. It happens, we’re all human.

Communication Skills

Investigations require talking to people. A lot of them. If you aren’t adept at flexible communication, you aren’t going to get very far.
“You have to be able to talk to kings and crooks, all levels of people,” says Neil. “Information can come from unlikely sources, you have to be able to maintain confidences.”
Heightened levels of communication were particularly necessary during her time as a hostage negotiator and undercover.
“It’s more intense in a hostage situation because it’s all about communication. If you’re talking to someone face to face, you have to be so mindful of not only trying to read the person but also of your own body language…You’re trying to read the situation while also remaining neutral because people can pick that up, even on the phone.”
She also highlights listening skills as an imperative. “It’s not about your ability to talk. You have to be able to show empathy, compassion and patience. That’s all in addition to your other skills as an investigator.”

Street Smarts

Like with any profession, training is a necessity. But there’s a lot about the job that can’t be learned from study.
“The formal training you get in a classroom tells you the laws, and gives you the legal framework you have to operate in. And that’s nailed into you,” McNab explains.
“As a copper and investigation leads to an arrest which leads to a court case and you need to make sure that everything is bolted down.”
“That formal training is essential, but then you build on it with experience, good mentoring and sometimes even being thrown into a situation where you have to work it out yourself and get it right.”
You learn on your feet, that’s where a lot of it comes from. You learn from everything that happens. Good investigators need to have that hands on experience working with people.”
“Both are important,” says Neil. “The experience you gain on the job is very important. But you need to know how to gather evidence properly too.”
When it comes to skills that need to be developed with experience, Neil suggests the following. “Street smarts. They’re important. The ability to think quickly, I don’t think you’ll learn that in a classroom. I’m really big on communication, that is so important, and being able to read people. That’s where you’re able to start gaining trust.”

Trump Draws Attention to Controversial Role of Putin-Friendly Former German Chancellor

mikenova shared this story from [Untitled].

(<a href=”http://CNSNews.com” rel=”nofollow”>CNSNews.com</a>) – In his criticism of Germany’s energy ties with Russia in Brussels on Wednesday, President Trump touched on a sensitive issue in Germany – the conduct of a former chancellor whose close ties with President Vladimir Putin, key involvement in lucrative energy deals, and support for Russian policies have long stoked controversy.
Accusing Germany of “paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia” for natural gas even as NATO is meant to be protecting European countries from Russia, Trump noted that “the former chancellor of Germany is the head of the pipeline company that’s supplying the gas.”
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s immediate predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), led Germany from 1998 to 2005.
While in office, he championed and helped push ahead the politically-sensitive Nord Stream project – a pipeline along the Baltic Sea bed to supply natural gas from Russia directly to Germany, bypassing the existing pipeline running through Ukraine.
The project raised concerns in Eastern Europe – and in the United States – because Russia has a history of using its ample energy resources as a political tool. The new route would make it even easier to do so, by cutting off gas to troublesome countries like Ukraine and Poland, while continuing to sell to big customers further west.

Just weeks after stepping down after losing an election in the fall of 2005, Schroeder became chairman of the shareholders’ committee of Nord Stream AG, a consortium led by the Russian state-owned Gazprom, building the pipeline.
The announcement sparked charges of conflict of interest and unethical behavior in German political circles – and prompted the late U.S. Senator Tom Lantos to label him a “political prostitute.”
Nord Stream has been on line since 2011, and now a further pipeline, Nord Stream 2, is in the works.
Schroeder continues to chair the Nord Stream AG shareholders’ committee, and last year he was additionally nominated as a director on the board of Rosneft, Russia’s state-owned oil company and largest oil producer – and a company under U.S. and E.U. sanctions as a result of Putin’s intervention in Crimea.
Over the years Schroeder has raised eyebrows and caused some embarrassment in his home country by taking stances favorable to his friend Putin – who in 2004 he infamously called a “flawless democrat” – and generally at odds with Europe and the West.

“When it comes to energy policy, only dreamers can pursue the idea that western Europe could become independent of Russian oil and natural gas,” he said in a 2008 interview in which he also dismissed the notion that Russia poses a threat to the West.
Schroeder criticized European recognition of Kosovo after it declared independence from Russian ally Serbia in 2008, and defended Putin’s more recent actions in Ukraine, calling for an end to sanctions against Moscow.
After he compared Russian military intervention in Ukraine with NATO’s intervention in the Balkans in 1999 – to end Serb aggression against Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority – Merkel described her predecessor’s comments and attempts to compare Kosovo and Crimea as “shameful.”
Four years ago, just weeks after Russia annexed Crimea after a referendum not recognized by most of the international community, Schroeder celebrated his 70th birthday with Putin at a party in St. Petersburg.

After Putin’s re-election earlier this year, Russian television coverage showed Schroeder in the front row at the inauguration ceremony, alongside Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Despite the embarrassment he has caused to Germany over the years, Schroeder early this week represented Germany’s federal government at the swearing-in ceremony for the re-elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to the foreign office in Berlin.

European Ex-Officials Deny Being Paid by Manafort to Lobby for Ukraine

mikenova shared this story .

Asked if the money Mr. Gusenbauer received came from Mr. Manafort, Mr. Prodi seemed skeptical but said that he didn’t know. “Go ask Gusenbauer,” he said, adding that he thought that it was more likely that the money came from European businessmen interested in keeping Europe and Ukraine close.
In an interview on Saturday, Mr. Cox said he had worked with Mr. Kwasniewski, Mr. Schulz and others to try to convince Mr. Yanukovych to release the jailed political opponents.
Mr. Cox said that he had never heard of the Hapsburg Group, had never been paid by anyone for his efforts in Ukraine, and had had no dealings with Mr. Manafort. But in 2012, he said, he had been invited by Mr. Schultz to go to Ukraine with Mr. Kwasniewski, the first of some 25 trips, all done “pro bono,” Mr. Cox said, to try to get the detainees released.
“The view in Western capitals was that these were the victims of selective justice,” Mr. Cox said. After meetings with Mr. Yanukovych and prosecutors, Mr. Cox and Mr. Kwasniewski were successful in obtaining the release of Mr. Ivashchenko and Mr. Lutsenko, who is now Ukraine’s prosecutor-general.
“We were not successful with Yulia Tymoshenko,” who was Mr. Yanukovych’s prime political opponent at the time, Mr. Cox said. “But we did ensure that Charité hospital in Berlin would have access to her in prison and she not be subject to further trials,” he added.
Mr. Cox made clear his distaste for Mr. Yanukovych, adding: “I wouldn’t lobby for him.”
In an interview on Saturday, Mr. Kwasniewski said, “I did meet Manafort two or three times during our mission in Ukraine in 2012 and 2013, but that’s it. At the time, he was an adviser to President Yanukovych, whom I also met, and it was only natural that our paths had to cross a couple of times.”
He added: “The last time I saw Manafort was probably around the fall of 2013. He never paid us. I never had any financial relationship with him, and I never heard of the Hapsburg Group.”

Manafort associate proposed hiring German, Spanish politicians to lobby on Ukraine

An associate of Paul Manafort in 2012 proposed recruiting former politicians from Belgium, Germany and Spain for a covert lobbying effort on behalf of the Ukrainian government, according to court documents briefly made public Wednesday by special counsel Robert Mueller’s team.
The documents give new insight into the planning for and goals of a campaign Manafort orchestrated to boost the image of then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his political party. The lobbying effort has subsequently become part of Mueller’s legal case against President Donald Trump’s former campaign chief, who faces charges of money laundering, failing to disclose his foreign lobbying work in the U.S. and obstruction of justice, among others.
Story Continued Below
The documents, some of which had previously been released with heavy redactions, appear to have been released in full by mistake. They were available online for a short time Wednesday afternoon, before they were replaced in a public court database by edited versions in which the names of many of those involved were removed.
Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel’s office, declined to comment.
One 2012 memo that was briefly made public in full Wednesday was apparently written by Alan Friedman, a former journalist based in Europe who previously had been identified as “Person D1” in documents released by Mueller’s team. (POLITICO and other outlets reported last week that Friedman appeared to be one of the people involved in Manafort’s campaign.)
Friedman’s memo, addressed to Manafort, outlines a plan “to assemble a small chorus of high-level European third-party endorsers and politically credible friends” to burnish Ukraine’s image ahead of the country’s election in the fall of 2012. The group — later dubbed the “Hapsburg group” — went on to lobby members of Congress and congressional staffers in the U.S. as part of a campaign orchestrated by Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, according to prosecutors.
Manafort has said the group’s work focused on Europe, but Mueller has made public documents that he says show they also lobbied in the U.S. A spokesman for Manafort declined to comment on the new disclosures Wednesday.
Friedman proposed that the group would be led by Alfred Gusenbauer, a former Austrian chancellor with whom he said he had spoken shortly before writing the memo. He also listed other European politicians with whom he hadn’t spoken but who “represent the initial talent pool Alfred and I would canvass informally if you approve.”
The names included: Romano Prodi, a former prime minister of Italy Adolfo Urso, a former Italian trade minister; Jean-Paul Moerman, a Belgian judge; Bodo Hombach, a former German government minister and “influential publishing boss”; Javier Solana, a former NATO secretary-general from Spain and “respected man for all seasons in Europe”; Alain Minc, an old adviser to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy; Alain Juppé, a former prime minister of France; and Aleksander Kwasniewski, a former president of Poland.
“Although his appointment as European Parliament official to monitor the [former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko] trial would prevent Aleksander Kwasniewski from any formal activity, Chancellor Gusenbauer will meet him June 29th and probe with him the idea of him joining a more formal Advisory Panel in 2013, and in the meantime whether he might feel comfortable with some conference appearances and/or join op-ed with Chancellor Gusenbauer in the next few months,” Friedman wrote.
All of those names, including Gusenbauer’s, were redacted in documents previously released by the special counsel.
It’s not clear how many of the potential recruits identified by Friedman went on to become part of the Hapsburg group. Lobbying disclosures filed by two Washington firms retained as part of Manafort’s campaign show that Gusenbauer, Prodi and Kwasniewski came to the U.S. as part of the effort.
In the memo, Friedman proposed paying Gusenbauer 25,000 to 30,000 euros a month for his work and suggested that payments to the others they planned to recruit could be routed through Gusenbauer “so as to be quite indirect.”
Story Continued Below
“Alfred Gusenbauer is willing to be discreet,” Friedman wrote.
Prodi told The New York Times in February that Gusenbauer had paid him to work on bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union. But he said the money came as part of the “normal private relations I had with him” and didn’t come from Manafort, to the best of his knowledge.
The second unredacted document released on Wednesday confirmed that Manafort had reached out to Friedman in February through WhatsApp. Konstantin Kilimnik, a longtime Manafort associate, sent messages to Friedman and a partner, Eckart Sager, in February and again in April.
Friedman and Sager turned those messages over to Mueller, according to the document. Mueller’s prosecutors have charged that the messages constituted an effort to obstruct justice by tampering with potential witness testimony.

Judge Delays Start of Manafort Trial for Six Days

mikenova shared this story .

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A federal judge on Monday delayed the financial crimes trial of Paul Manafort for six days to allow Mr. Manafort’s lawyers more time to review a trove of documents that they said could be crucial to his defense.
The decision by the judge, T. S. Ellis III of the United States District Court in Alexandria, pushed the start of the trial back to next Tuesday. It is the first of two faced by Mr. Manafort, the veteran Republican lobbyist and former campaign chairman for President Trump.
Mr. Manafort has been charged with money laundering and tax evasion in a case that arose from the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, into efforts by Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election.
Prosecutors have said they do not intend to raise the issue of collusion with Russia during the trial, and Judge Ellis warned lawyers on Monday not to stray into areas that could prejudice the jurors. He advised the defense not to attack the prosecutors’ motives, despite the fact that Judge Ellis has previously said in court that he believes Mr. Mueller is pursuing a case against Mr. Manafort as a way of pressuring him to help build a case against Mr. Trump.
“Even though I have said what I think the motive was, that doesn’t mean that it is admissible at trial,” the judge said. He also warned the lawyers to steer clear of the political sympathies of jurors, saying prospective members of the panel will not be queried about whether they voted for Mr. Trump.
“I am not going to allow this trial to drag on or encompass a bunch of irrelevant stuff” that does not bear on whether Mr. Manafort is guilty or innocent, he said. “I’m not in the theater business. You have to be better-looking for that.”
Judge Ellis granted the six-day delay after Mr. Manafort’s lawyers told him that prosecutors had turned over to them tens of thousands of documents three weeks ago from Mr. Manafort’s accountants and his business partner, Rick Gates.
Mr. Manafort, whose bail was revoked in a related trial, was in the courtroom for the proceedings on Monday, wearing a dark green jail jumpsuit.
Mr. Manafort, who worked for Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign for about five months in 2016 — including three months as his campaign chairman — is accused of failing to pay taxes on $30 million in income from Ukraine, where he had been hired to bolster a pro-Russia leader. He is also charged with laundering those funds through real estate and other means and engaging in bank fraud once the spigot of money dried up in 2014.
Judge Ellis warned the prosecutors away from mentioning Russia, citing “the amount of publicity and the antipathy toward Russians.” Greg D. Andres, the lead prosecutor, assured the judge that no government witness was expected to refer to Russia on the stand.
Mr. Andres pushed for — and appeared to at least preliminarily receive — permission to present evidence of who in Ukraine paid Mr. Manafort, including Ukrainian oligarchs who he said funneled payments to Mr. Manafort through an account in Cyprus that they controlled.
Mr. Andres said the prosecution intended to show Mr. Manafort’s “constant interaction” with the oligarchs and with Viktor F. Yanukovych, his principal benefactor. Mr. Yanukovych, an ally of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, was elected Ukraine’s president in 2010 but fled to Russia in 2014 after a popular uprising.
Both Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates worked for years to bolster Mr. Yanukovych and the pro-Russia parties in Ukraine. Mr. Gates, who served as Mr. Trump’s deputy campaign chairman, has pleaded guilty to related charges and is expected to testify against Mr. Manafort.
Mr. Andres also said that he planned to bring up Mr. Manafort’s work for the Trump campaign, albeit in a limited context. One bank chairman approved a loan to Mr. Manafort, he said, knowing that documents he had provided were false, because he was promised and eventually given a position on the Trump campaign. The same bank official hoped for but failed to get a job in the Trump administration, he said.
The judge also unveiled the identities of five witnesses whom he has ordered to testify under limited grants of immunity sought by the prosecution.

Russia & Germany’s Gerhard Schroeder: Putin’s Chief European Lobbyist

mikenova shared this story from National Review.

Making the click-through worthwhile: Why those concerned about Russia should be paying a lot more attention to former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder; the Eastern European NATO members’ baffling and self-destructive decision to skimp on defense spending; why Judge Kavanaugh’s clerks loved him; and the United States approaches a new threshold of energy power.
Why Is Germany’s Former Chancellor Now Putin’s Chief Lobbyist in Europe?
A lot of folks in the United States will scream furiously about this statement from President Trump at the NATO Summit:
“I have to say, I think it’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we’re supposed to be guarding against Russia,” Trump said at a breakfast with NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg. “We’re supposed to protect you against Russia but they’re paying billions of dollars to Russia and I think that’s very inappropriate . . . Germany, as far as I’m concerned, is captive to Russia.”
As usual, Trump is down the street and around the corner from a legitimate point. Well, perhaps he’s a bit closer this time. If you think Trump’s past business connections to Russian figures are troubling, you probably ought to be livid about how former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s has decided to become the chief lobbyist for Vladimir Putin in Europe.
One of Schroeder’s last acts in office in 2005 was authorizing “Nord Stream,” a pipeline bypassing key territories and controlled by Russia’s Gazprom energy company. Shortly after leaving office, Vladimir Putin arranged for Schroeder to chair the project, and then he started pushing for a second pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Instead of diversifying Europe’s energy supply, Schroeder’s pushed policies that make the continent more dependent upon Russia, not less. In September 2017, Putin arranged for Schroeder to become chairman of Rosneft, the state-owned Russian oil giant.
The Wall Street Journal’s Holman Jenkins wrote earlier this year that Schroeder is exactly the kind of wealthy, well-connected, influential figure acting on behalf of Russia that U.S. sanctions are supposed to target:

Germany’s allies and its European Union partners, including the quietly frantic Poles and Balts, can’t quite refer to Mr. Schroeder as a Putin agent nestled in the heart of Germany’s political and business elite. His name doesn’t appear on any U.S. government list. Section 241 of last summer’s sanctions law required the U.S. Treasury to identify the ‘most significant senior foreign political figures and oligarchs’ behind the Putin regime. These descriptors would seem to apply to Mr. Schroeder but it remains diplomatically impermissible to say so.

Lately, Schroeder has been hanging out with Putin at the World Cup. How is it, in an era when U.S. politics is suddenly deeply concerned — some would say paranoid — about Russian influence, that Schroeder’s cheerful embrace of lobbying for Russia has barely made a ripple on this side of the pond? The cynical answer is that most of those screaming the loudest about Russia today don’t think of Putin as sinister because of his lack of criticism of Trump; they think of Trump as sinister because of his lack of criticism of Putin. Indeed, Russia shot down a passenger airliner over Ukraine in 2014, and it was out of the news within a week.
But their cynicism doesn’t change the fact that Russia is generally hostile to American policies under presidents of either party, and Vladimir Putin would love to see the NATO alliance collapse. Their military actions in Georgia and Crimea demonstrate that when the Russians think they can get away with naked aggression, they’ll try it.
In that light, the reluctance of some NATO members to honor their agreements and spend the required 2 percent of GDP on military spending is baffling. In 2017, just four member states hit that 2 percent threshold — the United States (3.57 percent), Greece (2.36 percent), the United Kingdom (2.12 percent), and Estonia (2.08 percent), and we’ll give Poland the benefit of the doubt because it hit 1.99 percent.
Tiny Luxembourg ranked last, spending less than one-half of 1 percent on their military. Perhaps Luxembourg’s leaders figure that because they’re nestled between France, Germany, and Belgium, they can count on their neighbors to slow down any invading Russians.
But the NATO members in Eastern Europe have no excuse.
Look, Hungary, you’re just beyond Ukraine. If the Russian army rolls through the breadbasket of Europe, they might want some goulash to go with it, and in 2017, you spent just 1.06 percent of your GDP on your military. Dear friends in the Czech Republic, you’re just past Poland, and you’re at 1.05 percent. Maybe Slovenia is spending less than 1 percent of GDP on defense because they’re certain Melania Trump would never allow the nation of her birth to be invaded.
Guys, you’re the ones facing the biggest risk. If Russia’s military starts acting out its expansionist fantasies, we’re not going to see them begin with Russian ships advancing up the Potomac River. What’s really baffling is that these countries are reluctant to finance a military buildup with an American president who talks about the NATO alliance as if it’s a giant scam and who talks about European nations as if they’re delinquent on the rent. If there was ever a time for these countries to start spending on their own defense, this is it.
Lithuania figured out the score. They share a border with Russia and just got it up to 2 percent. NATO thinks that eight member countries will meet the 2 percent threshold in 2018, which is an improvement — but there are 29 members!
The Norwegian drama series Occupied offers the painfully funny lesson that if the United States ever decides that the NATO alliance isn’t worth it, it more or less ceases to exist. Sure, Trump has a crude, ahistorical perspective on the value of the alliance, but less than half of NATO member states are putting much effort into dispelling the notion that they’re a bunch of freeloaders who won’t take responsibility for the safety and security of their own citizens.
‘Judge Kavanaugh Has Been a Role Model to Us Personally as well as Professionally’
We would expect Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s former clerks to like him and endorse him . . . but it is reassuring to see 34 of them writing a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee touting his exceptional qualities as a legal mind and as a human being:

During his time on the D.C. Circuit, Judge Kavanaugh has come to work every day dedicated to engaging in the hard work of judging. We never once saw him take a shortcut, treat a case as unimportant, or search for an easy answer. Instead, in each case, large or small, he masters every detail and rereads every precedent. He listens carefully to the views of his colleagues and clerks, even – indeed, especially – when they differ from his own. He drafts opinions painstakingly, writing and rewriting until he is satisfied each opinion is clear and well-reasoned, and can be understood not only by lawyers but by the parties and the public. We saw time and again that this work ethic flows from a fundamental humility. Judge Kavanaugh never assumes he knows the answers in advance and never takes for granted that his view of the law will prevail. Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, Judge Kavanaugh has been a role model to us personally as well as professionally. He is unfailingly warm and gracious with his colleagues no matter how strongly they disagree about a case, and he is well-liked and respected by judges and lawyers across the ideological spectrum as a result.

It’s rather fascinating to watch lefty voices complain about news coverage of Kavanaugh being too focused on him as “a carpool dad” and focused on humanizing personality traits . . . when there’s an entire line of merchandise about “the notorious RBG” and gobs of glowing coverage of tough grandma Ruth Bader Ginsburg in places such as Glamour magazine, and she’s been invited to do her workout routine on Stephen Colbert’s comedy show. Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize we were only allowed to have lighter, humanizing, personality-based coverage of Supreme Court justices appointed by Democrats.
Put Crudely, We’re Pretty Awesome, America
Remember when we were worried that America’s future would be one of crippling weakness and dependence on foreign oil? Yeah, never mind.

“In 2019, [the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA)] forecasts that the United States will average nearly 12 million barrels of crude oil production per day,” said Linda Capuano, Administrator of the EIA. “If the forecast holds, that would make the U.S. the world’s leading producer of crude.”

We’ve been producing more than 10 million barrels a day in 2018.
ADDENDA: Our Charlie Cooke lays out why the press earns its distrust. Elsewhere, I point out a frustrating, deeply misleading headline that suggests that some copy editors at major newspapers simply don’t know much about the places that their outlets are covering.

What we know about the ‘Hapsburg group’ named in Manafort lobbying scheme

mikenova shared this story .

Ex-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort secretly paid a group of former senior European politicians to covertly promote the interests of Ukraine’s previous pro-Russia government in Washington, according to a new indictment.
The superseding indictment filed by special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday says Manafort “secretly retained” the ex-politicians, known as the “Hapsburg group”, to lobby for Ukraine in 2012 and 2013.
Here is everything the indictment tells us about the group and their involvement in the scheme.

Why Ukraine?

The indictment says Manafort earned tens of millions of dollars in income representing the interests of Ukraine, its political parties and leaders in a covert lobbying scheme.
Manafort, who was previously charged with multiple counts of tax and bank fraud, faces new charges of conspiracy, money-laundering, failing to register as an agent for a foreign actor and making false statements as a result of the alleged scheme.

How did the former European leaders get involved?

According to the indictment, acting on behalf of then-Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and his Party of Regions, Manafort in 2012 retained the so-called Hapsburg group to “take positions favorable to Ukraine, including by lobbying the United States.”
The plan was for the group to “appear to be providing their independent assessments of Government of Ukraine actions, when in fact they were paid lobbyists for Ukraine,” the indictment said.

Why did Manafort want them?

Manafort called the group “SUPER VIP” in an “EYES ONLY” memo created around June 2012, in which he explained that he wanted to “assemble a group of high-level European highly influencial [sic] champions and politically credible friends who can act informally and without any visible relationship with the Government of Ukraine.”

Who was in the ‘Hapsburg group’?

The indictment says the group was managed by a former European chancellor, who it names as Foreign Politician A, in coordination with Manafort.
While the former chancellor is not named in the filing, the head of government in both Austria and Germany is known as the chancellor.

What did the group actually do?

In 2013, the former chancellor and other former politicians from the group lobbied US Members of Congress, officials in the Executive Branch and their staff in coordination with Manafort, the indictment says.

How much did the group get paid?

According to the filing, Manafort paid the group more than 2 million euros in 2012 and 2013, wiring the money through at least four offshore accounts.

The ‘Hapsburg group’? European ex-politicians under scrutiny after Mueller indictment – The Washington Post

Though the group’s members weren’t named, they are collectively given an informal nickname: the “Hapsburg group,” an apparent reference (using an alternative spelling) to the Habsburg royal dynasty that ruled the Holy Roman Empire for centuries.

MORE DETAILS ON MANAFORT’S ‘HAPSBURG GROUP’: We reported earlier this month that a document released as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation shed new light on the former European politicians Paul Manafort considered recruiting as part of the “Hapsburg group.” Mueller has accused Manafort of violating foreign lobbying law by orchestrating the group’s lobbying efforts in the U.S. without registering as a foreign agent. The document, a 2012 memo written by former journalist Alan Friedman and addressed to Manafort, identified eight politicians that Friedman and Alfred Gusenbauer, a former Austrian chancellor, proposed recruiting to lobby.
Story Continued Below
— Only one of those politicians responded to requests for comment from POLITICO at the time. But we heard from another one, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, a former Polish president, late last week. He said he’d never heard of the Hapsburg group. Kwaśniewski said he met Manafort for the first time on Oct. 23, 2012, “during the international conference in Berlin, so the attached documents from September 2012 are completely unclear to me,” he wrote in an email, referring to the memo in which Friedman proposed recruiting him. Kwaśniewski said he traveled to the U.S. a few months later. On Feb. 1, 2013, he “had a series of meetings in Congress, Senate and State Department about Ukraine, but I cannot find my notes from these meetings and after so many years I do not recall who I was meeting with,” he wrote.
— In a follow-up email, Kwaśniewski wrote that he didn’t recall who had arranged those meetings, but that it wasn’t Manafort. “I have never worked for Mr. Manafort,” he wrote. “I was acting as a Former President of Poland, engaged in the Ukrainian matters since 1991. … The main subject of the meetings was the situation in Ukraine and the relations between Ukraine and the West.”

HAGIN’S FORMER BUSINESS PARTNER HAS A WHITE HOUSE IN: When Joe Hagin, one of President Donald Trump’s top aides, planned the president’s first foreign trip last year, Steve Atkiss went to Saudi Arabia, too. Atkiss, one of Hagin’s former partners at the Command Group, a security and intelligence firm, served as the White House’s volunteer logistics lead. “Hagin’s partnership with Atkiss since joining the Trump White House has drawn attention in the tight-knit community of presidential trip planners,” POLITICO’s Josh Meyer and Andrew Restuccia report. “Last month, some complained when Hagin’s former business partner was tapped for an even more high-profile and sensitive assignment than planning the Saudi trip — working as his on-site deputy in orchestrating the historic nuclear summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.”
— “It’s common for the White House to farm out the intensive planning known as ‘advance’ work to outsiders, who like Atkiss often work as volunteers. … But by tapping Atkiss, 41, for such sensitive and influential positions, Hagin may be helping him gain an edge in drumming up business for Command by affording him easy access to foreign governments and private individuals who could help the firm win future security and consulting contracts, current and former U.S. officials told POLITICO.” Full story.
COMPANIES WINNING TARIFF WAIVERS DON’T HAVE LOBBYISTS: The Commerce Department announced last week that seven companies received exclusions from the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs: Schick Manufacturing Inc., Nachi America Inc., Hankev International, Zapp Precision Wire, U.S. Leakless Inc., Woodings Industrial Corporation and PolyVision Corporation. None of the companies retain lobbyists, according to disclosure filings. That’s not unusual. “This is an administrative or a regulatory process, so some companies will do it themselves, some companies would hire a lawyer to help them fill out the paperwork,” said Paul Nathanson, a spokesman for theCoalition of American Metal Manufacturers and Users. But he predicted that “you’ll likely see an uptick in lobbying activity if you see many exclusion requests rejected by the Commerce Department.”

Today’s launch coincides with the World Gas Conference this week.
THINK TANK OF THE ‘RADICAL CENTER’ SEARCHES FOR IDENTITY IN TRUMP’S WASHINGTON: Rachel Cohen has a detailed piece in Washingtonian examining the travails of the think tank New America. “Founded at the height of the Nasdaq boom, New America was meant to be an antidote to other Washington think tanks — a young, nimble provocateur that would dispense with convention and birth fresh ideas. Nearly two decades later, the organization, which now employs more than 250 people, is casting about for relevance in a hyper-partisan era, according to interviews with more than three dozen current and former staffers, many of whom wanted anonymity for fear of retribution in the tight-knit DC policymaking community. In a way, it’s a symbol of an entire Washington industry — policymaking — that’s under pressure to fund itself without making ideological or ethical sacrifices.” Full story.
IF YOU MISSED IT THIS WEEKEND: “Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, discussed hiring a friend of a lobbyist family that owned a condominium he was renting for $50 a night, newly released emails suggest,” The New York Times’ Lisa Friedman and Hiroko Tabuchi report. The potential hire “was discussed in emails between Mr. Pruitt’s chief of staff, Ryan Jackson, and [J. StevenHart, who was chairman of the Washington lobbying firm Williams & Jensen and whose wife, Vicki Hart, rented the condo to Mr. Pruitt. Other subjects discussed during and after Mr. Pruitt rented Ms. Hart’s condo included refrigerant chemicals, which was raised on behalf of Coca-Cola, and the Paris Agreement — the global climate pact to address climate change — discussed on behalf of the global bank HSBC.”
— “The emails also show that Mr. Hart suggested other potential hires to the E.P.A., including one person who he emphasized was a Republican and an African-American, on behalf of an executive of the philanthropic arm of the pork giant Smithfield Foods.” Full story.

Was this incident “arranged” to point to this pro-Russian propaganda piece? (Which does not necessarily mean that it was “masterminded” and designed by the Russians or their agents.)

“This new reality is somewhat ironic given the fact that in 2014 arch neocon and Russophobe US Senator John McCain said that “Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country”. Today however, it is the Russian President who is being courted by leaders from north east Asia to the Middle East in attempts to lobby their unique geopolitical grievances to a man who is clearly capable of addressing these issues from his position as the leader of a superpower. By contrast, it is Donald Trump who is using a would-be security forum to discuss how much gas he can sell to Europe based on the anti-Russian rhetoric of European leaders themselves, all the while implying that the less LNG Europe buys from the US, the more contributions for NATO that Washington will demand, ostensibly in the very near future.
In this sense, like any capitalism savvy gas station owner, Trump is trying to make the best of a market in which oil prices are rising at a time when European leaders have talked out of both sides of their mouth regarding a Russian state that they pretend is a “threat” but which they rely on for dependant supplies of competitively priced gas.
All the while gas station owner Trump continues to remind potential customers that if they do not purchase his gas, he may simply charge them for the privilege of browsing in the forecourt of the gas station (aka more money for NATO).”

A police officer in Fort Myers, Fla., was in stable condition early Sunday, recovering from surgery after being shot Saturday night.
The officer, who was not immediately identified, was being treated at Lee Memorial Hospital, the News-Press of Fort Myers reported. The extent of his injuries was not known.
An unidentified suspect apprehended by police also was injured, but his condition was unclear, FOX 4 of Fort Myers reported.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately available. But shouts of “Office down!” were heard via police scanner around 7:30 p.m. ET, the News-Press reported.
“We do have a seriously injured officer,” police spokesman Mitch Haley told FOX4. “We are still attempting to try and get a hold of people that are in his family.”
Fort Myers Mayor Randall Henderson was in Asheville, N.C., on Saturday night. He told the News-Press that his thoughts were with the injured officer.
“We’re holding our breath while he struggles for his life,” the mayor told the newspaper.
The shooting took place near a gas station on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., the station reported.
Fort Myers Police closed the scene to traffic while the investigation was underway and asked residents to avoid the area. They said the scene would likely be cordoned off for several hours.
Gov. Rick Scott tweeted that he would provide local law enforcement with any resources they needed, and praised the “unimaginable sacrifices” that the state’s police officers make.
“Our law enforcement makes unimaginable sacrifices every day to keep our families and communities safe. We are praying for the brave officer shot tonight,” Scott said.
Saturday’s shooting coincided with the 10th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Officer Andrew Widman, which occurred July 18, 2008, the News-Press reported.
Fort Meyers is on Florida’s Gulf coast, about 125 miles south of Tampa.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Thursday that conclusions reached by U.S. intelligence agencies and criminal indictments presented are “based on evidence,” adding that they don’t “reflect mere guesses.”

Why it matters: Rosenstein’s remarks came after President Trump raised doubts at a press conference with Vladimir Putin about U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Russia had meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

Less than 24 hours later, amid widespread rebuke, Trump claimed he misspoke and accepts the conclusions reached by the intelligence community.

Rosenstein’s remarks on Thursday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, while announcing a new system designed to counter foreign actors attempting to interfere in the U.S. political process:

“Intelligence assessments include analytical judgments based on classified information that cannot be disclosed because the evidence is from sources — people who will be unable to help in the future if they are identified and might be harmed in retaliation for helping America — and methods — techniques that would be worthless if our adversaries knew how we obtained the evidence. Indictments are based on credible evidence that the government must be prepared to introduce in court if necessary.”

Gray Matter

The Secret History of Leviticus

By Idan Dershowitz

Dr. Dershowitz is a biblical scholar.

No text has had a greater influence on attitudes toward gay people than the biblical book of Leviticus, which prohibits sex between men. Before Leviticus was composed, outright prohibitions against homosexual sex — whether between men or women — were practically unheard-of in the ancient world.

Chapter 18 of Leviticus contains a list of forbidden incestuous acts, followed by prohibitions against sex with a menstruating woman, bestiality and various other sexual acts. In Verse 22, we find its most famous injunction: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” (Leviticus 20:13 repeats this law, along with a punishment for those who violate it: “They shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.”)

Like many ancient texts, Leviticus was created gradually over a long period and includes the words of more than one writer. Many scholars believe that the section in which Leviticus 18 appears was added by a comparatively late editor, perhaps one who worked more than a century after the oldest material in the book was composed. An earlier edition of Leviticus, then, may have been silent on the matter of sex between men.

But I think a stronger claim is warranted. As I argue in an article published in the latest issue of the journal Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel, there is good evidence that an earlier version of the laws in Leviticus 18 permitted sex between men. In addition to having the prohibition against same-sex relations added to it, the earlier text, I believe, was revised in an attempt to obscure any implication that same-sex relations had once been permissible.

The chapter’s original character, however, can be uncovered with a little detective work.

The core of Leviticus 18 is the list of incest laws, each of which includes the memorable phrase “uncover nakedness.” This is typically understood as a euphemism for sexual intercourse, so “you shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister” would mean something like “do not have sex with your father’s sister.”

Most of the incest laws are presented in a straightforward manner, but two are not. The first exception is: “The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness” (emphasis mine). At first, this verse appears to outlaw sex between a man and either of his parents. However, the italicized explanation, or gloss, suggests that the law actually addresses only one parent: the mother. It is difficult to reconcile the two parts of this sentence.

The same thing happens again a few verses later: “You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother.” Simple enough, right? The following gloss, however, may give you whiplash: “you shall not approach his wife, she is your aunt.” By the time we’ve finished reading the gloss, a prohibition against intercourse between a man and his paternal uncle has transformed into a law about sex between a man and that uncle’s wife.

Each verse in Leviticus 18’s series of incest laws contains a similar gloss, but the others are merely emphatic, driving home the point. (For example, “You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness.”) Only in these two cases — the father and mother, and the father’s brother — do the glosses alter our understanding of what is prohibited. A law prohibiting sex with one’s father fades away, and a law against sex with one’s uncle is reinterpreted as a ban on sex with one’s aunt.

What we have here is strong evidence of editorial intervention.

It is worth noting that these new glosses render the idiom “uncover nakedness” incoherent. The phrase can no longer denote sex if uncovering the nakedness of one’s father is an act that also involves one’s mother — as the gloss implies.

But more strikingly, the two exceptional verses are the only ones that address incest between men — all the others involve women. Once the new glosses were added to the text, the prohibitions in Leviticus against incest no longer outlawed any same-sex couplings; only heterosexual pairs were forbidden.

If a later editor of Leviticus opposed homosexual intercourse, you might wonder, wouldn’t it have made more sense for him (and it was probably a him) to leave the original bans on homosexual incest intact?

No. The key to understanding this editorial decision is the concept of “the exception proves the rule.” According to this principle, the presence of an exception indicates the existence of a broader rule. For example, a sign declaring an office to be closed on Sundays suggests that the office is open on all other days of the week.

Now, apply this principle to Leviticus 18: A law declaring that homosexual incest is prohibited could reasonably be taken to indicate that non-incestuous homosexual intercourse is permitted.

A lawmaker is unlikely to specify that murdering one’s father is against the law if there is already a blanket injunction against murder. By the same token, it’s not necessary to stipulate that sex between two specific men is forbidden if a categorical prohibition against sex between men is already on the books.

It seems that with the later introduction in Leviticus of a law banning all male homosexual intercourse, it became expedient to bring the earlier material up-to-date by doing away with two now-superfluous injunctions against homosexual incest — injunctions that made sense when sex between men was otherwise allowed.

This editor’s decision to neutralize old laws by writing new glosses, instead of deleting the laws altogether, is serendipitous: He left behind just enough clues for his handiwork to be perceptible.

One can only imagine how different the history of civilization might have been had the earlier version of Leviticus 18’s laws entered the biblical canon.

Russian Embassy in DC Slams US Demands to Release People Convicted of Terrorism

The United States has no “moral right” to demand from Russia a release of people convicted of terrorism, taking into account the fact Washington has been conducting continuing “hunt” for the Russians in third countries, the Russian Embassy in the United States said on Tuesday.
“The US establishment has even no moral right to accuse Russia and demand someone’s release. Especially, if they continue their hunt for the Russian people in third states… Terrorists cannot be be ‘bad’ in the United States and ‘good’ in Russia. We will never defeat terrorism this way,” the statement read.
In its turn, Russia insisted on the return of unlawfully convicted Russian citizens, primarily, Victor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko, who are imprisoned in the United States, the statement added.

On Monday, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert urged the Russian government to free more than 150 individuals identified by human rights organizations as political and religious prisoners. Nauert pointed out the United States was especially concerned about the fate of

 four Ukrainians — Oleh Sentsov

, Stanislav Klykh, Oleksandr Shumkov and Volodymyr Balukh.

Sentsov, a filmmaker, was convicted by a Russian court in August 2015 for plotting terrorist attacks in Crimea and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Bout was arrested in Bangkok in 2008 in a joint operation between Thai and US authorities on charges of conspiring to kill US nationals by allegedly agreeing to supply Colombian rebels with weapons. In 2010, he was extradited to the United States where he was jailed.
Yaroshenko was given 20 years in prison in 2011 on allegations of conspiring to import more than $100 million worth of cocaine into the United States. The Russian pilot was captured in Liberia in 2010 and handed over to the United States, prompting protests from Russia. In April 2016, the Appeals Court of New York denied revising the pilot’s sentence.

Russian pilot jailed in US vows to continue fight for return home — RT Russian Politics News

Konstantin Yaroshenko, the Russian pilot jailed in the US for 20 years following a sting operation, has told reporters that he and his family will continue their fight for his return to Russia.

In his latest interview with the Izvestia newspaper, Yaroshenko said that he had no intention “of twiddling his thumbs” and that he and his family would press on to secure his repatriation at the earliest opportunity.
Convicted by a US court back in 2011 for plotting to smuggle drugs into America, Yaroshenko maintains his innocence. “I am not guilty of anything,” he insisted to reporters. “They charged me with something that I have never done and sentenced be to a tremendous prison term of 20 years. In my view, it would be simpler for the Americans to just hand me over a long time ago, this would cause much less problems than we have now.”

The charges against the former commercial airline pilot were based solely on the testimony of US DEA agents, who had launched a sting operation against him. The Russian was first arrested in Liberia in west Africa and then flown to the US without official extradition procedures –  in violation of the diplomatic code.
Russian diplomats have repeatedly requested that the US authorities hand over their citizen, but the requests are consistently denied. Yaroshenko recently accused US special services of abducting and torturing him to make him testify against another Russian citizen – Yaroshenko’s former boss Viktor Bout – who is now also serving a sentence in a US prison.
The latter was arrested in Thailand following a US-led sting operation and his subsequent extradition to America was in violation of international law.
Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova has personally addressed US President Donald Trump, asking him to pardon the Russian citizen in view of the recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. However, earlier this week Putin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the two leaders did not touch upon the issue of Yaroshenko’s pardoning or handover during the talks.

2:51 AM 7/19/2018 – WH entertaining Russian proposal to interrogate Americans in exchange for Mueller investigation assistance – CNNPolitics | The Americans wanted for questioning by Moscow include Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia, and American-born financier Bill Browder, who successfully lobbied the US government to impose new sanctions on Moscow.

(CNN)The White House said on Wednesday it is entertaining a proposal raised by Russian President Vladimir Putin to interrogate Americans in exchange for assistance in the ongoing US investigation into election interference, putting the White House at odds with the State Department.

Putin raised the idea in his summit talks with President Donald Trump on Monday, according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

The Americans wanted for questioning by Moscow include Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia, and American-born financier Bill Browder, who successfully lobbied the US government to impose new sanctions on Moscow.

Sanders indicated on Wednesday no final decision had been made but that the proposal was under consideration.
“The President’s going to meet with his team and we’ll let you know when we have an announcement on that,” she said.
However, at the State Department on Wednesday, spokeswoman Heather Nauert offered a more forceful denunciation of the Russian allegations than her White House counterpart.
“The overall assertions that have come out of the Russian government are absolutely absurd,” Nauert said. “The fact that they want to question 11 American citizens and the assertions American citizens — we do not stand by those assertions that the Russian government makes. The prosecutor general in Russia is well aware that the United States has rejected Russian allegations in this regard.”

Four dead after two planes crash over FL Everglades

mikenova shared this story .

Four people were killed Tuesday afternoon when two small planes from a Miami flight school crashed in midair over the Everglades in West Miami-Dade.
The crash, which the Federal Aviation Administration placed about nine miles west of Miami Executive Airport, 12800 SW 145th Ave., involved a Piper PA-34 and a Cessna 172. Police confirmed three deaths Tuesday and found the fourth body Wednesday morning.
Tuesday night, police identified the first three victims. They are: Jorge Sanchez, 22, Ralph Knight, 72, and Nisha Sejwal, 19.
FAA records say both planes belonged to Dean International, a flight school based at Executive Airport with 26 accidents/incidents since 2007.
“Preliminary information that is coming into our homicide detectives is that the two planes were possibly training, which leads us to believe that you have a pilot and a trainer or trainer and a student, and in another plane a trainer and student,” Miami-Dade police Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said from a rescue area staged at an airboat business off Southwest Eighth Street near the Everglades.

Video shows debris from midair plane collision falling to the ground

Video shot by Daniel Miralles shows pieces of an aircraft falling to the ground after two planes collided in midair over the Florida Everglades in West Miami-Dade County on July 17, 2018.
By Daniel Miralles

Daniel Miralles, an angler who frequently spends afternoons fishing in canals near the airport, said he looked up in time to see the planes collide and record video of falling debris on his cellphone.
“I heard a weird sound. It sounded like a plane, but it it sounded too close. It sounded like an 18-wheeler going 100 mph down the street,” said Miralles.
The planes came down in a remote area reachable only by airboat. Dozens of emergency vehicles assisting in the rescue efforts gathered at Coopertown Airboat, 227th Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street about a dozen miles northwest of Executive Airport.
“Our crews were actually out here this morning training for incidents just as this,” said Miami-Dade Fire Marine Chief Andy Alvarez.
Alvarez said when crews arrived they boarded their fire rescue airboats and others from private companies willing to help and searched for debris. About a half mile in they found a downed plane. They tagged the debris and marked the GPS location, Alvarez said.
“About that point and time, we started receiving phone calls of a possible second aircraft and a possible explosion in the air, which led us to believe there was a midair collision,“ Alvarez said. Crews, with the help from air rescue, then found the second debris site about 400 yards away.
Zabaleta said several agencies, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miccosukee police, Florida Highway Patrol and National Park Rangers, were involved in the response.
The federal National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating.
Rescuers continued to search the two wreckage sites late into the afternoon. The hum of airboats could be heard throughout the evening behind a thick brush between the wreckage site and Southwest Eighth Street, the main drag through the Everglades.
Just before 6 p.m., rescue crews hauled in industrial lighting, suggesting the investigation would last long after the sun set. The area is void of buildings and streetlights and goes pitch black at night.
With little information available Tuesday afternoon, friends and family of pilots at Dean International waited anxiously for information at Executive Airport. Michael Coppo stood outside the flight school awaiting information about Sanchez, an old friend he met in Miami Dade College’s aviation program.

Coppo said Sanchez was on a “cross-country trip,” meaning he was traveling 50 nautical miles to another airport with a student and then returning. Coppo said Sanchez left at 9 a.m. and should have been back by 1 p.m., around the time of the crash.

Dean International flight instructor Jorge Sanchez storied a photo on Instagram of him flying over Immokalee, Florida, around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2018. His brother, Julio Sanchez, confirmed Tuesday night this his brother had died in the midair collision of two planes over the Everglades on Tuesday afternoon.

Coppo used to fly from Dean, but stopped about a year ago. He estimated that he and Sanchez flew 100 hours together before Coppo left the flight school.
Sanchez’s black Ford Mustang, with an “I’d Rather Be Flying” license plate frame, sat in the parking lot outside the school.
His older brother, Julio Sanchez, said Jorge was about four or five months short of reaching the required 1,500 hours flying time a pilot must have by federal law before applying to a regional airline.

Plane collision over the Everglades in west Miami-Dade County

Aerial footage and pictures show the impact of a collision in the sky over the Everglades on Tuesday July 17, 2018.

“In his mind, he was a pilot the minute he was born,” Sanchez said of his brother.
The younger Sanchez began his aviation training in high school and then at George T. Baker Aviation Technical College, before going on to receive his private, commercial and instructor’s pilot licenses at Miami-Dade College, his brother said. Julio Sanchez, who is also a pilot, said he’ll continue training in honor of his brother.
“He was on his way to accumulating all the hours toward his goal. It was his and my dream, the road map we were both taking,” said Julio, 28. “I was following in his footsteps. And I’ll continue in his honor.”
Another victim, Sejwal, enrolled in Dean International in September 2017, according to her Facebook page.
Her love of flying is evident from her Facebook posts, which include hashtags #aviationforlife and #pilotlife.

FHP updates Highway 41 closure following midair collision of two small aircraft

Florida Highway Patrol’s Joe Sanchez updates the media on the closure of Highway 41 closure following midair collision of two small aircraft on July 17, 2018.

Dean International’s website says it offers primary instruction for student pilots, advanced instruction for private and commercial pilots and training for multi-engine flights. What it doesn’t say is that FAA records showed more than two dozen accidents and incidents from 2007-2017.
A woman who answered the phone at Dean International’s Executive Airport office told a reporter to call back Wednesday. Dean staff at the hangar declined to comment, and one woman in a Dean uniform threatened to have reporters arrested who were trying to interview students and workers.
“Can you please go home? The cops are here and you know very well you’re not supposed to be here,” the woman said.
A Miami-Dade police officer sat in his car in a field across SW 129th Street from the Dean parking lot to make sure reporters did not go back to the school’s entrance.
In May, a Cessna 152 from Dean went down in the Everglades, putting two people in the hospital. A year ago, a Cessna 172 out of Dean International crash-landed on Crandon Boulevard in Key Biscayne the week after a Cessna 152 with a student pilot flying solo crashed in the Everglades. The student pilot, working on an advanced certification, died.

Peter Strzok’s Father, Peter Paul Strzok: 5 Fast Facts

mikenova shared this story from Heavy.com.

Peter Strzok, the FBI agent in a storm of controversy over his anti-Trump tweets and Congressional testimony, spent time living in Iran and Africa during his childhood, old newspaper clippings about his father, who is also named Peter Paul Strzok, show.
The elder Strzok is a former U.S. Army major who spent significant time in the Middle East and African continent, according to the clippings, which show the Strzok family also has deep ties to Wisconsin and Minnesota. Peter Strzok II, the FBI agent, does not have a lengthy record trail online, at least before his Donald Trump controversies, and his bio has thus been a bit of a mystery. However, his dad was frequently featured in local newspaper articles in the 1980s and even through the 1990s, and the elder Strzok’s biography helps flesh out the background of the son.
Another newspaper clipping confirms that Major Peter Strzok and his wife welcomed a son, Peter, on the FBI agent’s birth date. The family name goes far back. World War II draft records show there was also a Peter Paul Strzok who was born in Thorp, Wisconsin in 1891. The FBI agent’s father is 82-years-old. Military registers confirm the father was an Army major. Old phone directories give Peter Strzok, the agent, as Peter P. Strzok II. The FBI agent embroiled in the controversy also served in the U.S. Army.

the hilt is the part of the sword that shields the hand or is the transition part of the sword from blade to the handle. literally means to go all the way one can with the sword “take it to the hilt” … but is used as a metaphor in all situations.
the hilt prevented his hand from being injured when his hand slipped off the handle.

Washington reacts to Trump-Putin press conference with dismay
Tue, 17 Jul 2018 11:26:28 -0400

mikenova shared this story .

Republicans and Democrats alike are dismayed by President Trump’s comments at his joint press conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Monday. Mr. Trump stunned onlookers by repeatedly defending Putin during the press conference from allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and casting doubt on conclusions to that effect made by U.S. intelligence agencies.
Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, called the media event “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”
“President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin,” McCain said in a statement. “He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.”
“Disgraceful” is also the word former Republican presidential nominee and current Utah senate candidate Mitt Romney used to describe the press conference. Romney, who was famously mocked for calling Russia “our number one geopolitical foe” during the 2012 presidential campaign, appeared to reference the line in his Monday evening statement.
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who also sits on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, acknowledged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and was also critical of the Trump-Putin conference.
“The President’s statements today in Helsinki demonstrate his continued refusal to accept the unanimous conclusions of U.S. intelligence leaders and the bipartisan findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee,” she wrote in a statement. “This position is untenable and at odds with the forceful response this moment demands.”
Even House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy, who last week hounded former FBI lawyer Peter Strzok for issues relating to his alleged anti-Trump bias and Russian interference in the election, said that Russia is an enemy.
“Russia is not our friend,” Gowdy said in a statement. “Russia attempted to undermine the fundamentals of our democracy, impugn the reliability of the 2016 election, and sow the seeds of discord among Americans.”
Ultimately, he called on individuals within the Trump administration to communicate with Mr. Trump that Russia did indeed meddle in the 2016 election “without delegitimizing his electoral success.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, criticized Mr. Trump’s willingness to side with Putin over the American intelligence community’s conclusions, calling Mr. Trump’s words at the press conference “thoughtless, dangerous and weak.” The Democratic leader also called for Mr. Trump to sit for an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
“The President is doing grave harm to the standing of these United States while kowtowing to the number one enemy we probably have on the globe, Vladimir Putin,” Schumer said. “He will continue to do so if he isn’t checked.”
Ari Fleischer, a Republican and prominent Trump defender who served as former President George W. Bush’s press secretary, said that while he still does not believe Mr. Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 elections, he understands now why people think he’s being blackmailed.
“I continue to believe there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. But when Trump so easily and naively accepts Putin’s line about not being involved, I can understand why [Democrats] think Putin must have the goods on him,” Fleischer tweeted.
Outside of his office, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, said that Putin gained a “tremendous amount” from Monday’s conference and that Putin is probably celebrating with “caviar.”
“He gained a tremendous amount,” Corker told a press gaggle. “It was almost an approval, if you will — a public approval by the greatest nation on Earth towards him. He knows he gained a lot. I would guess he’s having caviar right now.”
At an Atlantic Council panel discussion, both Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, and Mark Warner, D-Virginia, denounced Mr. Trump’s behavior.
Warner called the president’s actions “outrageous” while Rubio said that Putin’s behavior Monday was very calculated, or “by design” and touching “certain pressure points.”
In a series of tweets after the press conference, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, an ally of Mr. Trump, called the meeting with Putin a “missed opportunity” that would be perceived by “weakness” by Russia. Graham also said that, if it were up to him, the soccer ball Putin gave Mr. Trump would be checked for “listening devices” and never be taken into the White House.
Retiring Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, one of Mr. Trump’s most outspoken critics in the GOP, called the press conference “shameful.”
Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, a sometime critic of Mr. Trump, took issue with the president’s claim that the U.S. is in part to blame for the state of Russo-American relations. Following up on a tweet he posted early Monday morning, Mr. Trump said at the press conference that he holds “both countries responsible” for tensions between the nuclear powers.
“This is bizarre and flat-out wrong,” Sasse said in a statement. “The United States is not to blame. America wants a good relationship with the Russian people but Vladimir Putin and his thugs are responsible for Soviet-style aggression. When the President plays these moral equivalence games, he gives Putin a propaganda win he desperately needs.”
Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan was more circumspect in his comments, but said Mr. Trump “must appreciate that Russia is not our ally.”
“There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world,” Ryan said in a statement Monday afternoon.
“That is not just the finding of the American intelligence community but also the House Committee on Intelligence. The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals. The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy.”
Democrats also criticized Mr. Trump’s performance. John O. Brennan, who ran the CIA under President Obama, called Mr. Trump’s comments at the press conference “nothing short of treasonous.”
“Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of ‘high crimes & misdemeanors.’ It was nothing short of treasonous,” Brennan tweeted. “Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???”
And Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the press conference proves “that the Russians have something on” Mr. Trump.
“President Trump’s weakness in front of Putin was embarrassing, and proves that the Russians have something on the president, personally, financially or politically,” Pelosi said in a statement. “This is a sad day for America, and for all Western democracies that Putin continues to target.”

M.N.: I think that Putin wants to get up to the hilt return on his investment, mostly emotional, but also the political, and very possibly, the financial investment also.

My impression is that Putin has the plans and the intentions to get the control of, and to “absorb” the  US Intelligence, Security, and Law Enforcement structures  and apparatus, and then his hostile takeover of America by the Trumpian Revolution from above will be complete.

There is a certain, time tested logic in this strategy; the Russia’s experiences and the moda operandi in Eastern Europe and the “near abroad” serve as the examples and the illustrations.
These, mentioned above, structures, parts, and the institutions of the US Government should be acutely aware of these plans and intentions, and they should act accordingly and expeditiously.
FBI, do pay attention to this issue. This might be life or death situation.
FBI, watch out!

In a Nutshell

You flip open a fat, zillion-page novel. You leaf through an encyclopedia. You read the tabloid headlines in line at the grocery store. You scroll through your Facebook feed.
When you look at any of these things, you are, in a word, interpreting them. But what’s actually happening when you do this? Sure, you’re breathing, you’re chewing gum, you’re letting your eyes wander toward that foxy individual across the room. But, when you actually work on understanding the words in front of you, what’s the process of how you interpret those texts?
That’s the basic question posed and explored by the school of thought called hermeneutics. Not hemorrhoids. Not Hermione Granger. Hermeneutics.
Hermeneutics is a general theory of how people interpret stuff—and that stuff can be across multiple genres and all manner of speaking and writing. Hermeneutics is less concerned with understanding specific works of poetry or theology or case law or whatever than it is with understanding what it means to understand in general. Totally clear, right?
What are the tools people use to get the gist of whatever thing they’re looking at, whether the Bible or the epics of Homer or Miley Cyrus’ latest single? The method of hermeneutics addresses that question by analyzing the rules that apply to each text, the circumstances that can occur in any one of them, and how people find the meaning in whichever masterpiece they’re looking at.
The hermeneutic philosophers (hermeneutites? Hermeneuticists? Hermenphrodites?) pretty much agree that when you interpret a text, you always do so situated in—cue dramatic music—the hermeneutic circle. Think the Circle of Life, but with stodgy theorists instead of singing animals.
The basic idea is that every interpretation takes place in some location, so every interpretation comes influenced by the specific circumstances of whoever’s doing the interpreting. Quite a few places, usually.
Why? Well, we live in different societies and different cultures. We speak different languages. We come from different traditions. We have different histories. We have different presuppositions and pre-judgments.
In other words, no one of us ever approaches a text from every place or no place. The meaning of your own life and circumstances informs the meaning you find in texts about the lives and circumstances of others. Are we there yet?
Having a perspective means there’s things you see and don’t see. An English-speaker unfamiliar with Russian culture and history, not to mention the whole Christianity thing, won’t be able to see the whole of Crime and Punishment the way Dostoevsky did. However, neither will the contemporary Russian, who is also pretty distant from the world in which Dostoevsky wrote his novel, even if they’re looking out the window at the same sort of icy snow storm you only get in Russia.
And guess what? Even the author has a perspective on her own work. If you’ve written a lot of papers, you’ve probably discovered the benefit of taking time away from a writing project so as to get a little distance and get a more objective view. The hermeneutic philosophers argue that no one can have a purely objective view, free of limits. No one sees the whole perfectly or fully, so no one can completely make sense of the parts. All we can do is go piece by piece—or better yet, arc by arc.
Moving along the hermeneutic circle means you get a better sense of the whole by better understanding the parts, and you get a better sense of the parts by getting a better sense of the whole—the whole of the text and the worlds outside the text from which it came and to which it belongs.
You never get a perfect sense of everything under the sun, however, so there’s no leaving the hermeneutic circle. No, we’re not there yet. Never will be. But think of the circle as a giant pizza to bite through one cheese lump at a time, and that way you can choose to enjoy the ride.

Why Should Readers Care?

Whether you’re reading the news while you sip your coffee, wading through Virgil’s Aeneid for your lit class, responding to another driver who’s honking at you, or reading up on J-Wow’s latest tweets, hermeneutics is there. It always shows up the moment something meaningful is communicated from someone to someone else.
Basically, wherever you find human beings, you find hermeneutics (not that it doesn’t spread into the animal kingdom—how does an antelope interpret a lion’s roar? They run).
So, to study hermeneutics is to study what happens when interpretation happens: what‘s the process by which meaning is understood, what happens to us when we seek to understand our world by interpreting it, why that antelope just knows it’s gotta bolt.
You should care about hermeneutics because it’s something that happens to you every day, and what it shows you is that you’re not some isolated individual thinking about the world in your own way; you’re bound to traditions that have given you ways of perceiving and interpreting, judging and acting, not all of which are you aware of.
Oh, you think your thinking is really your own? Think again! Your rootedness in tradition colors and shapes how you understand and approach the world. But lucky for you, studying hermeneutics will give you a better sense of what your own thinking and acting owe to the languages you speak, the family you come from, the culture in which you live, and the society in which you eat, sleep, think, talk, read, tweet, blog, shmoop, and operate day by day. In a way, it’s all about you!

Why Should Theorists Care?

Sometimes a specific way of interpreting a text is called a “hermeneutic.” Theorists speak of a feminist hermeneutic, or a Marxist hermeneutic, or a classical hermeneutic. The term denotes the angle a person takes to approach a text and the methodology one employs. The term is fitting because hermeneutics, as a general theory of interpretation, underlies all individual hermeneutic tools and tactics.
It’s easy to get locked into one’s preferred hermeneutic, believing it’s the be-all-end-all of how to see the world. The study of hermeneutics can provide the antidote to this temptation. By seeing one’s preferred manner of interpreting as coming from a specific place and rooted in specific traditions, one begins to see that there are more things in the world than your given philosophy can cover.
On top of all those other tools, hermeneutics is a tool in humility. Just the sort of medicine most theorists need. And, to be honest, who hasn’t wanted to humble a theorist?

Applications[edit]

Archaeology[edit]

In archaeology, hermeneutics means the interpretation and understanding of material through analysis of possible meanings and social uses.
Proponents argue that interpretation of artifacts is unavoidably hermeneutic because we cannot know for certain the meaning behind them. We can only apply modern values when interpreting. This is most commonly seen in stone tools, where descriptions such as “scraper” can be highly subjective and actually unproven until the development of microwear analysis some thirty years ago.
Opponents argue that a hermeneutic approach is too relativist and that their own interpretations are based on common-sense evaluation.

Architecture[edit]

There are several traditions of architectural scholarship that draw upon the hermeneutics of Heideggerand Gadamer, such as Christian Norberg-Schulz, and Nader El-Bizri in the circles of phenomenology. Lindsay Jones examines the way architecture is received and how that reception changes with time and context (e.g., how a building is interpreted by critics, users, and historians).[51] Dalibor Vesely situates hermeneutics within a critique of the application of overly scientific thinking to architecture.[52] This tradition fits within a critique of the Enlightenment[53] and has also informed design-studio teaching. Adrian Snodgrass sees the study of history and Asian cultures by architects as a hermeneutical encounter with otherness.[54] He also deploys arguments from hermeneutics to explain design as a process of interpretation.[55] Along with Richard Coyne, he extends the argument to the nature of architectural education and design.[56]

Environment[edit]

Environmental hermeneutics applies hermeneutics to environmental issues conceived broadly to subjects including “nature” and “wilderness” (both terms are matters of hermeneutical contention), landscapes, ecosystems, built environments (where it overlaps architectural hermeneutics[57][58] ), inter-species relationships, the relationship of the body to the world, and more.

International relations[edit]

Insofar as hermeneutics is a basis of both critical theory and constitutive theory (both of which have made important inroads into the postpositivist branch of international relations theory and political science), it has been applied to international relations.
Steve Smith refers to hermeneutics as the principal way of grounding a foundationalist yet postpositivist theory of international relations.
Radical postmodernism is an example of a postpositivist yet anti-foundationalist paradigm of international relations.

Law[edit]

Some scholars argue that law and theology are particular forms of hermeneutics because of their need to interpret legal tradition or scriptural texts. Moreover, the problem of interpretation has been central to legal theory since at least the 11th century.
In the Middle Ages and Italian Renaissance, the schools of glossatorescommentatores, and usus modernusdistinguished themselves by their approach to the interpretation of “laws” (mainly Justinian‘s Corpus Juris Civilis). The University of Bologna gave birth to a “legal Renaissance” in the 11th century, when the Corpus Juris Civilis was rediscovered and systematically studied by men such as Irnerius and Johannes Gratian. It was an interpretative Renaissance. Subsequently, these were fully developed by Thomas Aquinas and Alberico Gentili.
Since then, interpretation has always been at the center of legal thought. Friedrich Carl von Savigny and Emilio Betti, among others, made significant contributions to general hermeneutics. Legal interpretivism, most famously Ronald Dworkin‘s, may be seen as a branch of philosophical hermeneutics.

Political philosophy[edit]

Italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo and Spanish philosopher Santiago Zabala in their book Hermeneutic Communism, when discussing contemporary capitalist regimes, stated that, “A politics of descriptions does not impose power in order to dominate as a philosophy; rather, it is functional for the continued existence of a society of dominion, which pursues truth in the form of imposition (violence), conservation (realism), and triumph (history).”[59]
Vattimo and Zabala also stated that they view interpretation as anarchy and affirmed that “existence is interpretation” and that “hermeneutics is weak thought.”

Psychoanalysis[edit]

Psychoanalysts have made ample use of hermeneutics since Sigmund Freud first gave birth to their discipline. In 1900 Freud wrote that the title he chose for The Interpretation of Dreams ‘makes plain which of the traditional approaches to the problem of dreams I am inclined to follow…[i.e.] “interpreting” a dream implies assigning a “meaning” to it.’[60]
The French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan later extended Freudian hermeneutics into other psychical realms. His early work from the 1930s–50s is particularly influenced by Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty‘s hermeneutical phenomenology.[61]

Psychology[edit]

Psychologists and computer scientists have recently become interested in hermeneutics, especially as an alternative to cognitivism.
Hubert Dreyfus‘s critique of conventional artificial intelligence has been influential among psychologists who are interested in hermeneutic approaches to meaning and interpretation, as discussed by philosophers such as Martin Heidegger (cf. Embodied cognition) and Ludwig Wittgenstein(cf. Discursive psychology).
Hermeneutics is also influential in humanistic psychology.[62]

Religion and theology[edit]

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: FBI, DOJ don’t deserve roles

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok’s congressional testimony revealed inherent bias, mendacity and corruption within the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division (“Trump says after Strzok hearing that ‘rigged’ Mueller probe is hurting U.S. relations with Russia,” Web, July 13). Mr. Strzok proclaimed that the vulgar and partisan messages with his mistress Lisa Page via FBI smartphones could never create biased investigations. He testified, “And the suggestion that I, in some dark chamber somewhere in the FBI, would somehow cast aside all of these procedures, all of these safeguards, and somehow be able to do this is astounding to me. It simply couldn’t happen.” Yet Mr. Strzok conveniently omitted that these “safeguards” included the former FBI Director James Comey, the now-fired Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, the demoted DOJ official Bruce Ohr and of course, the now-resigned FBI girlfriend-attorney Lisa Page. These people were the checks and balances to which Mr. Strzok alluded. This all suggests something rotten in the Counterintelligence Division.
Such unsavory biases and rigged investigations are not new. The FBI has a known history of “black bag” jobs and “COINTELPRO” investigations that were highly political and inherently unconstitutional. Now these FBI bureaucrats have been caught acting as a virtual legal defense service for the Hillary Clinton team and something more akin to a Spanish Inquisition to the Donald Trump team.
Since the FBI and the DOJ refuse to come clean, they no longer deserve the honor of running America’s counter-intelligence programs. The function of counter-intelligence should be transferred to the Department of Homeland Security as soon as possible.

Mueller’s web: Everyone caught up in the Russia investigation

There’s been such a flood of stories about who Robert Mueller has interviewed for his Russia investigation — and who’s been charged in connection with it — that it can be easy to lose track. Here’s a map to help you keep every move straight.

How it works: The map starts with the people who participated in key events and the ones who have been charged. Expand this story and you’ll see the rest, including current and former Trump administration officials and the people with more distant connections.

The key events:

The hacking:

  • 12 Russian military officers were indicted for hacking and releasing the emails of Democratic campaign organizations, including the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, in an effort to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

Who’s not on the list:

  • Michael Cohen. Trump’s personal lawyer has been raided by the FBI, and Mueller is looking into his activities, but there have been no reports that Mueller’s team has questioned him directly.
  • Donald Trump Jr. The bigger intrigue is about why there have been no reports that Mueller’s team has questioned Trump Jr., given that he is a key player in one of the biggest events: the Trump Tower meeting with Manafort and Kushner. (He did testify before a Senate committee.)
  • President Trump. And, of course, Mueller hasn’t questioned the president — yet.

This story has been updated to include the indictments of the 12 Russian military intelligence officers.

Editor’s note: Axios’ David Nather, Lauren Meier, Haley Britzky, Lazaro Gamino and Andrew Witherspoon contributed to this story.
