When the Department of Justice appointed Jack Smith as Special Counsel to prosecute Donald Trump, the announcement made very clear that the appointment wouldnāt result in any delays of any kind when it comes to the advancing criminal cases against Trump. Sure enough, weāre now seeing that in action.
In spite of the routine cries of āWhy isnāt the DOJ doing anythingā and āJust indict him alreadyā on social media, in reality the DOJ is in court as we speak, working through the ongoing process of sorting the evidence seized from Trumpās Mar-a-Lago home. No one likes the slow speed at which the court system works, but at no point as the DOJ ādelayedā anything or ādragged its heelsā in any way.
In fact the DOJ has a federal court hearing later today, to convince the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to shut down the remainder of Trumpās Special Master stunt (yes, these things really do take that long to play out in court). And last night the DOJ made a court filing confirming that Jack Smith is now in charge of this prosecution, and that Smith has signed off on all of the arguments that DOJ representatives will be making in court today.
In other words, not only is Jack Smith now running the show, there are indeed no delays at all. If Smith needed time to get up to speed, or if there were any procedural delays as a result of his appointment, the DOJ would have sought to postpone todayās hearing. Instead, Smith and his team are hitting the ground running.
