Mike Pence is trying to pull a fast one

Mike Pence, who at this point has vitally no primary or general election appeal to any voting demographic on any side of any fence, is reportedly in the process of hiring a high profile 2024 campaign staff. He knows he has to give the appearance of being viable, so the media will portray his campaign seriously, so he can make it all the way to the Iowa caucus before dropping out with 2% of the vote, so he can land a lucrative book deal.

Pence will spend his campaign giving leaks and exclusives to various major media outlets, so they’ll return the favor by giving him a promotional interview when it’s time to promote his book. It’s just how the game works.

The irony is that the media probably is only interested in propping up Pence’s irrelevant 2024 campaign specifically because it thinks it can get ratings out of Trump’s attacks on Pence. Once Trump is indicted, arrested, and fades away, the media might not keep propping up Pence’s campaign. So Pence, who will never be polling competitively at any point, and whose ability to limp along will be solely reliant on media hype and the campaign donations that follow, may have real difficulty even making it to Iowa.

The other kicker is that because the media is so eager to chase ratings by pretending Trump is actually going to run in 2024, he hasn’t had to hire a campaign staff (or even a campaign manager) in order to get the media to portray his fake campaign as real.

So Pence is having to spend a big chunk of his campaign donations on a high profile staff just to get the media to portray his nonviable campaign as viable, yet Trump doesn’t have to spend a penny on campaign staff. Pence must be wondering what he’s got to do to catch a break.
