Rocket reaches orbit in Europe“s first satellite launch

2023-01-09T23:47:32Z

Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne rocket blasted into orbit late on Monday after it was released from its carrier aircraft, a key stage in Western Europe’s first satellite launch from the coastal town of Newquay in southwest England.

The rocket detached from the wing of a modified Boeing 747 over the Atlantic Ocean, at about 35,000 feet (10,670 meters). Nine small satellites will be deployed from the vehicle.

Heralded by the British government as the birth of a home-grown space launch industry, more than 2,000 enthusiasts had gathered to cheer when the “Cosmic Girl” aircraft lifted from the runway in the seaside resort.

Virgin Orbit (VORB.O), part-owned by British billionaire Richard Branson, said the satellites would be deployed into lower Earth orbit (LEO) in its first mission outside its United States base.

The company tweeted that LauncherOne had successfully reached Earth orbit around seven minutes after it was released from “Cosmic Girl”.

The “horizontal” launch in Newquay – population 20,000 and famous for its reliable Atlantic waves – enabled Britain to beat Sweden, Norway and others in launching orbital satellites.

Britain’s Minister for Science George Freeman said winning the European Space race was a “historic moment”.

“We are sending a big signal tonight that we are intent on being a force in the space economy of tomorrow,” he told Reuters before take-off.

The new spaceport will launch small satellites at a critical time after the Ukraine war cut access to its use of Russian Soyuz vehicles. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ariane 6 rocket, which launches from Kourou in French Guiana, is designed to carry large satellites and has also had delays.

The Ukraine war has highlighted the importance for tactical military purposes of smaller satellites, like those being launched from Newquay, which can get into low orbit at much shorter notice than bigger ones.

The UK Space Agency said it would be a moment of national pride for Britain’s growing space industry.

Deputy Chief Executive Ian Annett said more small satellites were built in Britain than anywhere other than the United States.

“So we have the full spectrum except launch,” he told Reuters. “If you have launch, you have everything.”

The mission, called “Start Me Up” after the Rolling Stones track, will deploy breakfast cereal boxes-sized satellites to fulfil tasks such as maritime research and detecting illegal fishing, as well as national security, Virgin Orbit said.

The company has previously launched from California. Chief Executive Dan Hart said the protocols would stay the same, joking to reporters: “Pasties versus hamburgers, it’s a significant shift.”

He added that partnerships with the UK Space Agency, Spaceport Cornwall, the British aviation regulator and the Royal Air Force had made the launch possible.

Space enthusiasts with tickets for the launch secured positions in a viewing area as rock group Europe’s “Final Countdown” blasted from loudspeakers on Monday evening.

Retired teacher Pauline Clifton, who had come from Falmouth in the south of the county, said she was always confident that the spaceport would come to fruition. “To be leading the way in anything is quite something for Cornwall,” she said.

Virgin Orbit’s focus on LEO satellites is at the other end of the scale from the large satellites in geostationary orbit that are launched by vertical rockets.

UKSA’s Annett said the LEO economy had boomed in recent years, noting Jeff Bezos’ Kuiper Systems and Elon Musk’s rival Starlink constellations.

But he said smaller satellites were also doing vital research in climate change, and they were a growing opportunity for an industry employing 47,000 people and worth 16.5 billion pounds ($20.09 billion) a year in Britain.

Getting the mission off the ground has taken time. It was delayed from late last year due to the myriad regulatory clearances needed for the inaugural flight.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Classified documents from Joe Biden’s vice-presidential days were discovered in November by the U.S. president’s personal attorneys at a Washington think tank, CBS News reported on Monday, citing a White House lawyer.

The nearly 10 documents were found at Biden’s office at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, CBS News reported. It said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland had asked the U.S. attorney in Chicago to review the classified documents which were handed over to the National Archives.

The classified material was identified by personal attorneys for Biden on Nov. 2, the day before the midterm elections, Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, was quoted as confirming to CBS News.

The documents were discovered when Biden’s personal attorneys “were packing files housed in a locked closet to prepare to vacate office space at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C.,” Sauber said in a statement cited by CBS News.

Reuters could not immediately contact Sauber for comment. The Justice Department and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Biden was vice president under former President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.

CBS News said its sources did not disclose what the classified documents contained or their level of classification but added that they did not contain nuclear secrets.

The Justice Department is separately probing former President Donald Trump’s handling of highly sensitive classified documents that he retained at his Florida resort after leaving the White House in January 2021.

Kevin McCarthy is unencumbered by morals. He only claims to take a stand on anything. He poses, pretends, prevaricates and preens. He is like an actor who has buried himself under so many roles he’s lost track of who he really is. He has become one of TS Eliot’s hollow men, with a headpiece where his head used to be — now filled with straw. In Congress, Kev is the way the world ends.

Welcome to the new McCarthyism, a void wrapped in a chasm inside an abyss. Kevin McCarthy is finally Squeaker of the House — in two senses. One, in that he just squeaked in with the barest margin, a margin the size of Donald Trump’s penis. Two, in the sense that he’s a pipsqueak, a little man, a silly man, a man of nothing and of no substance, and he now finds himself standing up to his chin in the mighty shoes of Nancy Pelosi.

Adam Schiff tells a story about Kev in his autobiography. Back in the days long before Donald Trump became history’s biggest blight on the American political landscape, back in the halcyon days when Trump was at worst a punchline to a bad joke, on a memorable day approximately six months before the 2010 midterms, Congressman Schiff happened to be seated next to fellow Congressman Kevin McCarthy on a plane back from Washington to California. They exchanged the usual uncomfortable small talk that you might expect between men from opposite ends of the political spectrum who had nothing in common and little to say to one another.

In their brief exchange while waiting for the in-flight movie (“any movie,” as Schiff wryly puts it), Schiff expressed the hardly unexpected opinion that the Democrats would retain the House after the election and McCarthy expressed the opposite view. It was the humdrum and unsurprising opinion of two rivals in opposition. It was understandable wishful thinking.

The following morning Schiff happened to pick up a newspaper where he read a quote from Kevin McCarthy. In it McCarthy said that everyone knows that the Republicans were going to take back the House. He said that he’d recently spoken to Adam Schiff on a plane, and even Schiff admitted that Republicans were going to take back the majority.

Later when Schiff confronted McCarthy about the lie, about how in fact he’d said the precise opposite of what McCarthy quoted him in the press as saying, McCarthy replied, “I know, Adam, but you know how it goes.” Schiff was beside himself with incredulity. “No Kevin, I don’t, you just make shit up and that’s how you operate?” McCarthy just shrugged.

In one infuriating incident, Adam Schiff learned all he needed to know about Kevin McCarthy. Schiff is more restrained in his assessment than I am. In his opinion McCarthy traffics in alternative facts. In my opinion McCarthy is a lying pile of crap who will invent any falsehood he needs in order to advance his corrupt and evil agenda, and that agenda is his own personal advancement. Either way, in that one encounter, Adam Schiff learned everything he needed to know about Kevin McCarthy.

Of course, shocking as this anecdote may be, it’s hardly surprising. McCarthy, like most Republican liars, isn’t very good at lying. Because of this he’s developed a reputation as a backstabbing, conscience-free snake.

That reputation came back to him in the form of the 15 humiliating ballots it took to elect him Squeaker of the House. That is how hated he is. So now he can finally stand before the House and squeak, gavel in hand. It was a Pyrrhic victory, a humiliating road to his make believe power over chaos.

This is the man who removed Liz Cheney from all her committee assignments because she voted to convict the arch criminal Donald Trump in his impeachment trial. This is the man who at first came out against Trump and the violence of the January 6 insurrection, until the failed ex-president summoned him down to Mar-a-Lago and handed him his marching orders. Kev the Squeaker is a failure, a haircut of a man, a spineless nobody, a nothing, just like his lord and master.

In his novel “Mother Night,” about a man who pretends to be a Nazi during World War II, Kurt Vonnegut writes that it is his only novel that he happens to know the moral of. The moral is this: You are who you pretend to be, so be careful who you pretend to be. Kev the Squeaker pretends to be no one at all.

McCarthy bends with the wind. He whored away his soul to become Squeaker of the House. He is in reality a little man, a silly man, a hollow man. He is the perfect symbol of the Republican Party and the new McCarthyism. And in the coming two years of chaos of the 118th Congress, he will take us to new depths and show us just how small a man he truly is. And, as ever, ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, comrades and friends, stay safe.

DOJ reviewing potentially classified docs at Biden center

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is reviewing a batch of potentially classified documents found in the Washington office space of President Joe Biden’s former institute, the White House said Monday.

Special counsel to the president Richard Sauber said “a small number of documents with classified markings” were discovered as Biden’s personal attorneys were clearing out the offices of the Penn Biden Center, where the president kept an office after he left the vice presidency in 2017 until shortly before he launched his 2020 presidential campaign in 2019. The documents were found on Nov. 2, 2022, in a “locked closet” in the office, Sauber said.

Sauber said the attorneys immediately alerted the White House Counsel’s office, who notified the National Archives and Records Administration — which took custody of the documents the next day.

“Since that discovery, the President’s personal attorneys have cooperated with the Archives and the Department of Justice in a process to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives,” Sauber said.

A person who is familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it publicly said Attorney General Merrick Garland asked U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch to review the matter after the Archives referred the issue to the department. John Lausch was appointed to his post by former President Donald Trump.

The National Archives did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

CBS was first to report on the discovery of the potentially classified documents.

The Justice Department for months has been investigating the retention of roughly 300 documents that were marked as classified and were recovered from the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump. In that instance, prosecutors say, representatives of Trump resisted requests to give back the full stash of classified documents and failed to fully comply with a subpoena that sought their return.

FBI agents in August served a search warrant at the Mar-a-Lago property, removing 15 boxes of records.

That investigation is being led by special counsel Jack Smith. Prosecutors have interviewed an array of Trump associates and have been using a grand jury to hear evidence.

It is not clear when a decision when will be made on whether Trump, or anyone else, should be charged.

Ukraine fights Russian assault on salt mining town along eastern front

2023-01-09T23:21:01Z

Russia has stepped up a powerful assault on Soledar in eastern Ukraine, officials in Kyiv said, forcing Ukrainian troops to repel waves of attacks led by the Wagner contract militia around the salt mining town and nearby fronts.

Soledar, in the industrial Donbas region, lies a few miles from Bakhmut, where troops from both sides have been taking heavy losses in some of the most intense trench warfare since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly 11 months ago.

Ukrainian forces repelled an earlier attempt to take the town but a large number of Wagner Group units quickly returned, deploying new tactics and more soldiers under heavy artillery cover, Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on Monday on the Telegram messaging app.

“The enemy literally step over the corpses of their own soldiers, using massed artillery, MLRS systems and mortars,” Malyar said.

Russia’s defence ministry did not mention either Soledar or Bakhmut in a regular media briefing on Monday, a day after facing criticism for an apparently false claim of a missile strike on a temporary Ukrainian barracks.

Wagner was founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Drawing some recruits from Russia’s prisons and known for uncompromising violence, it is active in conflicts in Africa and has taken a prominent role in Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

Prigozhin has been trying to capture Bakhmut and Soledar for months at the cost of many lives on both sides. He said on Saturday its significance lay in a network of cavernous mining tunnels below the ground, which can hold big groups of people as well as tanks and other war machines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in nightly video remarks on Monday that Bakhmut and Soledar were holding on despite widespread destruction. He cited new and fiercer attacks in Soledar, where he said no walls have been left standing and the land is covered with corpses.

“Thanks to the resilience of our soldiers in Soledar, we have won for Ukraine additional time and additional strength,” Zelenskiy said.

Zelenskiy did not spell out what he meant by gaining time or strength.

But Ukrainian officials, led by the commander in chief General Valery Zaluzhniy, have warned that Russia is preparing fresh troops for a new, major offensive on Ukraine, possibly on the capital Kyiv.

Military analysts say the strategic military benefit for Russia of capturing Bakhmut and Soledar would be limited. A U.S. official has said Prigozhin is eyeing the salt and gypsum from the mines, believed to extend over 100 miles underground and contain auditorium-scale caverns.

Pro-Russian bloggers quoted Prigozhin as saying his forces were fighting for the administration building in Soledar.

The Ukrainian military said reinforcements had been sent to the town.

In an evacuee centre in nearby Kramatorsk, Olha, 60, said she had fled Soledar after moving from apartment to apartment as each was destroyed in tank battles.

“There isn’t one house left intact. Apartments were burning, breaking in half,” said Olha, who gave only her first name.

Two people were killed in a Russian rocket attack on Kramatorsk on Monday evening, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, an aide to Zelenskiy, said on Telegram.

Some 25 miles (40 km) to the north in the town of Siversk, Ukrainian soldier Heorhil, 28, said Russian regular forces had replaced less well-trained fighters in the area.

“Unfortunately, both sides are suffering big losses, which means also our units have losses,” he said, speaking near destroyed houses blanketed in snow. “One should never underestimate the enemy.”

Reuters was not able to independently verify the battlefield reports.

Farther north in the Kharkiv region, a Russian missile strike on a marketplace in the village of Shevchenkove killed two women and wounded four others, including a 10-year-old girl, regional prosecutors said.

Badly injured people lay on the ground and rescue workers sifted through piles of rubble, overturned and burning stalls, and a large crater, video footage from police and Ukraine’s presidential office showed. A police officer carried a girl with blood on her face from the scene.

Moscow has not commented on the reports from the village, which Ukraine recaptured from Russian forces in September.

Ukrainian authorities reported multiple Russian strikes across the country, including on Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, and infrastructure in the regions of Donetsk, Kherson and Mykolaiv – where the regional governor said 15 people were injured in the shelling of a coastal town.

As the war grinds towards the one-year mark, Russia’s military is under domestic pressure to deliver battlefield successes from hawkish commentators demanding more aggression following losses of territory and troops.

Russia, which initially cited a need to rid Ukraine of nationalists, now says it is fighting a Western threat to its own existence. Kyiv and its Western allies, which have imposed broad sanctions on Moscow and sent Ukraine weapons to defend itself, say last February’s invasion was entirely unprovoked.

Zelenskiy, who has lobbied allies frantically in recent weeks for weapons for Ukraine, continued his diplomatic marathon on Monday, speaking to several European leaders about increasing defence support for his country.

“The world knows that every day of Russian presence on Ukrainian soil means deaths, injuries, pain and suffering of people,” he said.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Dr. Dre are feuding

  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a video on Twitter using the instrumental of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.”
  • She later lashed out at Dr. Dre in a statement to TMZ.
  • She said she “would never play your words of violence against women and police officers.”

GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Monday morning posted a video to her Twitter account showing her walking to the House floor as the instrumental of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” played in the background. Hours later, she was locked out of her account and engaged in an entertaining back-and-forth with the legendary producer and his attorney.

Howard E. King, Dr. Dre’s attorney, sent Greene a cease-and-desist letter for her use of “Still D.R.E.,” alleging copyright infringement. He lambasted Greene in the process.

“One might expect that, as a member of Congress, you would have a passing familiarity with the laws of our country,” King wrote.  “It’s possible, though, that laws governing intellectual property are a little too arcane and insufficiently populist for you to really have spent much time on. We’re writing because we think an actual lawmaker should be making laws not breaking laws, especially those embodied in the constitution by the founding fathers.”

—No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen (@NoLieWithBTC) January 9, 2023

Dr. Dre told TMZ, “I don’t license my music to politicians, especially someone as divisive and hateful as this one.”

Prior to receiving the letter from his attorney, Greene addressed Dr. Dre in a statement to TMZ. “While I appreciate the creative chord progression, I would never play your words of violence against women and police officers, and your glorification of the thug life and drugs,” she said.

The video was taken down by Twitter and replaced with a copyright notice. While Greene told TMZ her account had been locked, she was able to post an update on the ordeal Monday afternoon.

6 reasons why moving to Florida can be a major disappointment, from surprisingly high tax bills to severe storms that ‘should be an eye opener’

Michael BordenaroMichael Bordenaro records YouTube videos that outline the dimmer side of the Sunshine State.

Courtesy of Lisi and Michael Bordenaro

  • Michael Bordenaro, who’s been a Florida realtor for 13 years, and says residential turnover is high.
  • Movers are shocked by traffic congestion, oppressive heat, a high cost of living, and more, he said.
  • He outlined six reasons transplants to the Sunshine State boomerang back to their hometowns.

Fourteen years ago, Michael Bordenaro moved to South Florida and never looked back.

But the Miami Beach real-estate agent told Insider that between 40% and 50% of his buyers turn around and move out of Florida a few years after relocating there. More transplants grow disillusioned with the local lifestyle than you’d expect, added Bordenaro, a 35-year-old from Illinois.

“So many people come for a week or two on vacation, and they think their life is going to be like that every day,” he said.

But it’s not all Disney and the beach, Bordenaro cautioned. He added that newcomers often don’t consider important factors before making the jump — from oppressive heat to abysmal salaries.

His words of warning, which he also captures alongside other real-estate analyses almost daily in video for 57,700 YouTube subscribers, come as Florida — which saw a large jump in population during the pandemic — shows no signs of slowing in growth. Florida’s population grew to over 22 million people from July 2021 to July 2022, according to Census Bureau data.

Bordenaro told Insider the biggest red flags people should know about before they load their U-Hauls.

Severe weather

Florida transplants don’t often anticipate just how severe the hurricanes — and their damage to property — can be. The state’s oppressive, almost year-round heat and humidity are another issue.

“People don’t expect this heat for this long,” Bordenaro said. “There’s no relief. It’s hot 24/7, seven months a year.”

Especially after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Bordenaro expects more movers to second-guess their move to Florida.

“When people see that, that should be an eye opener,” he said. “That can happen where you live.”

Low-paying jobs

Wages in Florida are significantly lower than in other states, which rankles locals and newcomers alike.

“Jobs in Florida pay less than they do in other places for the same job,” Bordenaro said.

Because Florida imposes no state income tax, he said, employers may feel like they can pay staff less since workers take home more of their paycheck.

In May 2022, CBS News named Florida the “least affordable” place to live in the county. Also, WTXL, the ABC affiliate in Tallahassee, named Florida one of America’s least affordable states based on a 2019 study by Joblist.com that found that the cost of living was more expensive than wages.

“Even though the pay has gone up a little bit, it’s definitely not keeping up with what it costs to live in Miami, which is the biggest problem,” Bordenaro said.

Exorbitant home prices and rents

The cost of real estate in the state is another tough pill to swallow, Bordenaro said. Florida housing is so expensive at the moment that “it’s concerning,” he added. “It’s an alarm sign.”

“The appreciation rates that we’ve seen in South Florida have been much higher than the national average,” Bordenaro said. “In some areas, it went up 20% per year over the past couple of years.”

Take the median sale prices for homes in Miami-Dade County in November 2022, the most recent month for which data is available. They jumped nearly 16% year-over-year to $475,000, according to Realtor.com. The price growth is fueled by millennial snowbirds, remote workers, and retirees, who are moving south and breaking area real-estate records.

Newcomers moving to Florida have also been shocked at property tax bills that are higher than they expected, Insider’s Kelsey Neubauer reported.

The looming climate crisis

The state’s rising tides pose a real threat, too.

“Most of Florida doesn’t sit much higher than sea level,” he said. “In 30 years, you might not be able to live in your spot anymore, whether you’re trying to retire or start a new life.”

As a result, insurance premiums on Florida property are projected to increase. Because of rising sea levels, many homes in South Florida are at a higher risk for disaster, which makes it more expensive to insure them.

Traffic

Congestion on major thoroughfares gets pretty bad, Bordenaro said, especially during rush hour. “It’s becoming overcrowded,” he added.

According to Bordenaro, Miami is attempting to alleviate the traffic issue by constructing more lanes and new exits, but the going road work only leads to more traffic.

Miami-Dade County, which is 2,431 square miles, had a population per square mile of 1,422 in 2020 — an 8% increase from 2010, according to Census data. The population per square mile in the city of Miami is even higher: 12,285 in 2020.

“Miami is relatively a small place when it comes to the amount of infrastructure we have to handle the amount of people that live here,” he said. “It’s been a growing problem. If you ask me, it’s getting worse.”

Unfriendly neighbors

Bordenaro said some native Floridians and longtime locals worry that transplants from major metros — especially from blue states such as California and New York — may make Florida more like stereotypes of those places. These NIMBYs fear that newcomers may usher in big-city problems or push local politics to the left.

“People are very weary of having Florida have turned into California,” he said. “That’s probably the biggest concern for people that have lived here for a long time. Especially when you look at the two very different ways that Florida handled the pandemic versus California.”

It’s a more common issue in small cities than in places like Miami, he added, but it’s still an issue for people who migrate south from Manhattan or San Francisco and expect to fit seamlessly into communities that may prove unreceptive.

“Depending on where you come from, it can be tough to make friends with the locals,” Bordenaro said.

The timing of your meals can help jumpstart weight loss, according to science

  • Scientists think the timing of meals can affect our biological rhythms.
  • Making breakfast the largest meal of the day is best for losing weight, studies have found.
  • It’s best to stop eating three hours before bedtime, according to scientists.

You had dinner hours ago but you’re still awake, and your stomach starts telling you it wants a late-night snack.

Now you know you’re not supposed to eat that late, because you’ve heard it’s bad for you, but how late is too late?

Besides snacking, how late can dinner be?

Just like the circadian rhythm that controls our sleep, scientists think our bodies have a circadian clock for eating, too. And messing with this clock by eating too late or at weird times could affect our sleep and our ability to maintain a healthy weight.

While most Americans eat our biggest meal at dinner, multiple studies have found this is linked to weight gain.

Researchers have had groups of people eat more calories at breakfast than dinner, while the other group eats more at dinner than breakfast. Inevitably, the first group ends up losing more weight while the second group ends up gaining it.

In studies, people who eat most of their calories at dinner also tend to skip breakfast, get worse sleep, eat more calories overall, and be obese.

One small study published in September 2022 found that people who ate bigger breakfasts didn’t feel as hungry as people who ate more calories at dinner.

So when exactly should you stop eating at night?

Scientists can’t agree on a single set time, but the consensus seems to be within three hours before bedtime. So if you go to bed at 11 p.m., don’t eat after 8 p.m.

Banishing late night snacks after that time could help alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux disease, too.

If you still feel those uncontrollable hunger pains late at night, try shifting when you eat.

Try eating more of your calories earlier in the day, at least 30 grams of protein per meal, or six smaller meals instead of three huge ones. All of these things have been linked to weight loss. Be sure to consult with a doctor before trying anything drastic.

Hopefully when you’re winding down for the night, your stomach doesn’t expect a treat, too.
