An alpha-keto acid, or 2-oxo acid, such as pyruvic acid, has the keto group adjacent to the carboxylic acid. Pyruvic acid is a colorless liquid with a smell similar to that of acetic acid. It is miscible with water, and soluble in ethanol and diethyl ether.
