In 1970, the NFL-AFL merger formed the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The merger ended a competitive rivalry between the two leagues. Before merging, the AFL, founded in 1960, offered an alternative to the established NFL, founded in 1920.
