The Difference Between an Aldose Sugar and a Ketose Sugar

What makes a sugar a sugar, chemically, is a carbonyl group: a carbon double-bonded to an oxygen. In an aldose, that group sits at carbon-1, the terminal position, giving the molecule an aldehyde functional group. In a ketose, the carbonyl is at carbon-2 (or occasionally carbon-3), producing a ketone.
