For the last few weeks, Iāve had the pleasure of following 20-year-old Zeāev Remer, an Orthodox student-athlete at California Lutheran University, a nonsectarian Division III school in Thousand Oaks. My story about his experience went live on theĀ ForwardĀ website today, accompanied by gorgeous pictures taken by a local photographer.
Not that going to Yeshiva University, whose basketball team famously rattled off 50 straight wins, is suddenly passĆ©. But Remer chose a school that has next to zero Jewish people ā it doesnāt even have a campus Chabad. I wanted to know why. And I wanted to know how itās going.
I think youāll like it, even if you donāt like sports.

š¤Ā Thereās been a lot of hand-wringing about artificial intelligence lately. But a software engineer named Daniel PattĀ isĀ using AI to identify Holocaust victims and survivorsĀ in archived museum photographs. One of the photos was a match for actorĀ Josh Gadās great-grandmother. Patt, Gad (ofĀ FrozenĀ fame) and Gadās mother,Ā Susan Greenblatt,Ā shared the story onĀ The View.
šŗĀ My colleague PJ GrisarĀ callsĀ Getting Away With Murder(s),Ā a new documentary about the failure to prosecute 99% of the war criminals who perpetrated the Holocaust, āa fiery indictment of a world that lost interest in justice.ā Itās now free to stream onĀ RokuĀ andĀ Peacock.Ā
šĀ ESPNās Jeremy SchaapĀ caught up with Meyers Leonard, the NBA player who hasnāt played since he was recorded using an antisemitic slur in March 2021,Ā for a report onĀ Outside The Lines.Ā Leonard seems genuinely remorseful āĀ compared to Kyrie Irving, itās night and day. TheĀ OTLĀ clip is about seven minutes long, but if you have more time,Ā Schaapās interview on theĀ ESPN DailyĀ podcast is even better.
š„¶Ā And while Iām aware I already dissed it last week, Iāve been validated by a couple of internet takedowns of You People, the new Netflix comedy about a Black-Jewish relationship starringĀ Jonah HillĀ andĀ Lauren London.Ā J. WeeklyĀ said it wasĀ āan unfunny step back for Black-Jewish relations.ā Our very own Mira Fox straight up called it āoffensive.ā

ā³ļøĀ GOLF magazineās February cover athlete is Burbank native and recent Farmers Insurance Open championĀ Max Homa, whose Twitter banter belies a competitive obsession and aĀ screen-worthy career arc.
šāāļø Actress and comedian (and Santa Monican) Kate BerlantĀ (Sorry to Bother You,Ā Donāt Worry Darling) recently embarked on an encore run of her one-woman show in New York. She toldĀ TheĀ New YorkerĀ why she doesnāt write her standup āĀ and why she dropped out of Hebrew school.
šĀ Also: Grown-up child star Abigail BreslinĀ (Little Miss Sunshine) got hitched andĀ the huppah pics are really cute. Meanwhile, I canāt stop laughing atĀ the astounding pretentiousness of former mayor Eric Garcettiās official portrait.

š¤Ā One more story from me this week: After Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday, I blogged about theĀ strange Jewish laws surrounding accidental killing.
